Hi Peas,
The font of all collective knowledge! ( That is my ass kiss before I ask a favor)
I am on the board of a charter school that is opening in August! I am charged with creating a generic supply list that we can give to our teachers who can then tweak it based on their preferences.
So I thought I would ask if a few of you would share your child's middle & or High school supply list.
I have them from the local school districts. I just thought I might broaden the scope a bit.
If you want to email me send me a pm and I will send you my email address!
Thank you so much in advance! I really appreciate your help!
Katie

Middle & High Schools around here don't get their lists until the first day of school. It's pretty annoying.
The majority of DSs 6th grade classes last year asked that you have on hand: college ruled notebook paper; 2-3 highlighters; blue pens; crayons; 3 prong folders in various colors; index cards (some asked for different colors); college ruled 1 subject notebooks; and crayons. He also needed a calculator for math - just a cheap one, not scientific yet. I'm sure there was more but I can't remember it right now.

At my girls' middle school, each teacher sends home their own list because they have specific needs. We usually end up buying a binder, dividers and notebook paper for each class. Some classes also want a folder. History/geography/whatever they've got for social studies that year usually wants colored pencils, and we make sure they have pencils/pens/erasers/ruler in their bag.
If your school isn't going to supply things like kleenex, sanitizer, paper towels, etc. for each classroom, then they should put those on the list as well or include them as an "optional donation" item.

Our high school students don't get a list. They get told by each teacher what they need. It's a little frustrating, but I understand the reasoning.
I'd say students probably need a 2 pocket folder or 3 ring binder for each class. They probably need pens, lined, paper, pencils, highlighters, etc. They probably need a calculator, type depending on the class. Most of our schools need paper towels, tissues, etc.

Middle & High Schools around here don't get their lists until the first day of school. It's pretty annoying. Yes very, there's absolutely nothing in sale anymore, if it even still in stock. Last year I had to go everywhere for a specific size/color/ style binder. Staples and walmart were completely out.

This is the first year we have ever had an actual printed list. It's mostly common items I would have bought anyway, but as a school supply junkie, I actually like having a list. 3 Ring Binder 5 Dividers 5 Pocket Folders One 5 Subject Spiral Notebook Highlighters Pencils & erasers Erasable blue or black pens Red pen Pencil case Dry erase markers Post-it notes

Aw man, I really wanted this to be a vent.
School supply vents are one of my favorite 2peas categories.

Our Middle and High Schools don't hand out teacher specific lists until the first day of school. Annoying. I keep a Rubbermaid tote stocked with basics that I pick up on the excellent BTS sales and fill in the blanks once we get the list. This year is a complete unknown. DSs entering Freshman class is the first to have mandatory iPads. It's a big unknown right now how much the iPads will be used vs. traditional school supplies. Here is his general supply list from 8th Grade. The teachers sent their own specific lists home after this... link to supply list

be sure you have policies about people who can't afford any of this. in CA, you can't be compelled to pay anything towards the cost of education. consider building the cost for these into the school budget. not a fan of school supply lists.

We absolutely will supply for those who can't afford it. But being our first year out budget is way too tight to supply it all. North Carolina is 46th in student expenditures. Its really amazing schools can afford lights!

one thing I haven't seen on anyone's list yet (may have missed it) is a flash drive. Our school requires one for all kids middle school and above. Last year they did a big buy of 8g sized ones and sold them during registration for $5 each. it was a good buy and it helped a lot of people remember they are needed. the kids can't always use google drive and they need the ability to take their work with them to and from school.

Additional items not yet mentioned that we've been asked to purchase include: *combination lock for school locker *dry erase markers *batteries (to be given to math teacher) *gym clothing (certain color of shirt & shorts) *scotch tape *composition notebooks *compass/protractor *reams of copy paper *zip lock baggies
My experience has been that in elementary school the kids are give the list before school and expected to have everything on day one. In middle and high school, some of the classes don't give the school supply list until the first week of school. The first year my oldest son was in high school we had to go buy school supplies EVERY day the first week of school. It drove me nuts! DS would come home from school with additional requests from his teachers every day. So I learned to wait until Thursday to go shopping because by then all of the teachers had given their lists.

I started buying school supplies this week. My kids are in high school and they won't have a list until the end of the first week or later. They don't really know what they will need, but we do know what they like and will use. So I buy while the stuff is cheap and on sale and they get to pick from my bin.
They will always need... folders with prongs loose leaf paper pens - blue or black, sometimes red pencils pencil cap erasers notebooks (spiral mostly) composition books colored pencils markers crayons (just in case) post it notes pencil sharpener hole punch lunch box backpack loose leaf reinforcers (those circley things) highlighters index cards flash drive binders assorted 1, 1 1/2 and 2 inch binder dividers glue sticks scissors tissues paper towels copier paper expo markers hand sanitizer sharpies pink pearl erasers white out (or write out) stapler graph paper calculator
I think that is everything on my kids' personal lists. Now granted some stuff we have from previous years. But often times I will buy new or a few extras, just in case... (aka Office Depot has 1 cent folders, erasers, and index cards this week) so I will buy those and if they don't need them, donate them to the school.

If there is one thing I've learned about school supplies in my years at 2Peas it is this: Ticonderoga pencils are the best. You may want to specify that as a preferred brand of pencil when you make your list. If you want to add an asterisk with an explanation of why that brand is preferred, it could read that it is a quality over quantity issue because they sharpen/write/wear evenly and save multiple interruptions and trips to the pencil sharpener. There! Aren't you teachers and moms proud of me?!

Our HS has went to iPads so we don't need as many supplies as before. Some paper, graph paper, red correction pens, and a few folders served us well.

For my AP Chem students I want them to have expo markers, pencils, black or blue pens, a bound composition book with graph paper in it, a jump drive, paper, 3 ring binder, and tab dividers. They also need a calculator with scientific operations. Most of them already have graphing calculators for their math classes though.
The only difference for my Honors Chem classes is they do not need the bound composition book.

My MS/HS kids don't get a generic list. Each teacher has their own requests so they get the info on the first day of school. I buy them the staples like binders, dividers, ruled pages, pens, pencils, calculator, spiral notebooks, index cards, that kind of stuff. Oftentimes that is enough and supplies are only needed as projects arise. Days of lists a mile long are long gone.

For high school we never get a list. My kids just needed the basics. Pens, pencils, notebooks and loose leaf paper. Sometimes a binder or flash drive. But many things are dependent on the class.
Also middle school was different for each grade. Some need crayons, some use markers instead. Or colored pencils. I would be asking the teachers. They know what the kids will need. If they have pe in every grade. Tennis shoes are a must. But others things vary.
