My sister and mom got into running races this last year. While they run races that are organized, they occasionally run virtual races. They live in AZ and go through AZ Virtual. Do any of you do this? What are your thoughts on it. The idea is you run anywhere, anyplace, anytime. You get a medal for doing it. Post your time online and see how you did with the others that have also run.

I don't because I'm too cheap, but I have plenty of friends who do and they love them. If I'm paying for a race I want support.

I am not a runner but I power walk. I have done a couple of races in the last 6 months including a 15K earlier this month. I would LOVE a virtual race. With the 15K, I had to drive to the fairgrounds area of Dallas to pick up my race packet either 1 or 2 days before the event (about 30 miles one way - but I had a hockey game to go to so picking up my race packet wasn't too bad). Then on event day, I drove back to the fairgrounds area, waited around for the race to start, dealt with traffic as thousands of people made their way in, etc. I could have easily completed the 15K before I ever got started. I know that some people run races with their friends but as a power walker, I am not fast enough to go with the majority of runners and I can't find any walkers that can walk as fast as I do so I end up doing it by myself with my headphones on listening to my audiobook, which is exactly what I do when I power walk from my front door. I do LOVE the medal that I got from the 15K though. LOL It was the Hot Chocolate run and the medal looks like an open candy bar. Super cute!

I participate in virtual runs as well as actual races. I like them - they motivate me for longer training runs and there are a lot of great charities out there to support.

I can see doing them when getting to an actual race is difficult. I like the excitement a race brings. I would rather run with a bunch of people. I personally don't have any friends that run. Some of those medals are pretty cool and I like the idea of running for a cause. I was curious if you thought that the medals from these kinds of races mean the same as running an actual race at an organized place. Anyone can order a medal and not really run, but just collect them. I guess they are more on your honor type races.

My friend does it for the bling, especially if it's farther away.

I did a challenge for January to run 3 or more miles outside everyday and signed up for a virtual race so I'd get a medal. It helped motivate me. For the most part I enjoy actual races more. '
A friend and I did a 5K series that had three medals that combined to make a shamrock and when she posted a pic on Facebook one of her running friends commented that she usually "does not condone medals for 5Ks" LOL it doesn't matter what you condone if the person paying wants to do it and it motivates them shut it! So my opinion is if have the money why not? Obviously there is a market for virtual races.
