Leather vest usually worn by men in olden times? (Edited to change period to question mark, in case I'm wrong. I didn't look it up, so I could very well be wrong)

Can I ask how you know? Like, what context?
My students and I came across this word in some poetry work we were doing today. None of us had ever heard of it before.

Haven't looked it up, but agree it is a men's historical clothing item, often made of leather.

I don't know exactly where I first came across it, but I was very involved in the Renaissance Faire in CA in high school and college. I t could have been there. I also started reading Shakespeare in 9th grade and have read quite a bit of his plays - I wouldn't be surprised if it were used in his work. I like literature from and about that period.

Interesting.
It was used in a list of synonyms like this: Coat, jacket, jerkin, parka, etc...
My students thought it was oh so hilarious to tell one another to zip their jerkins at the end of the day.

I feel very sheltered now! Lol!
So, in the list of words given to the kids it was used incorrectly. It is not really a coat.

Yep, knew the word from reading. Think that leather jerkins were mentioned in the Lord of The Rings Series which I read as a young teen, as part of the Hobbits' attire.

Since it is a man's close fitting jacket or vest, I don't think it is bad that anyone would know. So, what did you think it was? Julie

I feel very sheltered now! Lol! So, in the list of words given to the kids it was used incorrectly. It is not really a coat. I would class it more as a "vest" since it is generally sleeveless... but it can have sleeves so it could be more coat like than a vest. On the other hand my dad has a down filled vest he wears when it is quite cool. It keeps his body warm. He doesn't feel the cold as much on his arms and likes the freedom of arm movement he has wearing it instead of a regular down coat. So I'd say the word is ok in the list. Not really right but not really wrong either.

Yes, but I keep a list of words I want to look up while I am reading, so somewhere along the line, I must have looked it up. I read a lot, and subsequently, look up a lot of words I don't know.

I know from playing one of those hidden object games on my IPad. Damn! Does this mean I have to stop telling my students to put their phones away when they are gaming during study hall because it's not educational?

Yes, I've read plenty of historical books both fact based and fictional. I've seen the word in that context.

a type of shirt or blouse? I think I've seen the word in historical novels; maybe made out of leather? I might have read it in LOTR, but more likely I saw it in bodice-ripper romances...

No, that's what I thought it was, but thought maybe knowing what it was would make me some sort of old clothing nerd. ha.
