Interesting Social Studies assignment my 9th grader has. The project is called "My Culture". But it is about the subset of culture that is our family. The student takes a poster board, and divides it into 7 sections. 7 various aspects of our culture are to be represented: Family, Economy, Government, Arts, Traditions, Language, and Education. All have to be represented visually, no words. The specific one that interested me most, was Government. My son asked me, "If our family were a Government, what would it be?" He speculated, "Democracy?" I asked him if he and his sister decided they deserved ice cream tonight, and I was the only parent home, would they get ice cream because their two votes "yes" trumped my vote "no." So, not Democracy. "Communism?" No. Those kids are not contributing much work to the collective. "Monarchy?" I had to think about that one. They certainly don't treat me like a Queen. My husband had to clean the gutters last week, not very Kingly. "Dictatorship?" Well, that implies that we do what we want, without consideration of the well being of our "masses." And the well being of our "masses" is always first and foremost in our minds. So I suggested "Benevolent Monarchy." We consulted Google images, since this project is supposed to be visual. This is what we got:

We always remind them that we live in a benevolent dictatorship.

The benevolent dictatorship pictures were not as sweet. Plus, dictator implies one ruler. With our Monarchy, I get to be the Queen, so still get my say over the kids!

What a cool project. I love that it has to be visual rather than with words.

What an insightful project and idea.
I, personally, am currently the only member in my immediate circle.
I consider myself to be the Queen of my benevolent monarchy.
As Queen, I have the right to enact or impose a dose of dictatorship or eviction, on anyone trying to breach, harm, bring dysfunction,or take advantage of my monarchy.

That picture describes it better than the term benevolent monarchy!

What a great project!
We usually laugh and say we're a dictatorship. From now on we'll say benevolent monarchy! Thanks!

We are a benevolent dictatorship - the kids get a say, but not a vote.

We are a benevolent dictatorship - the kids get a say, but not a vote. That is what I have always said too. You can state your case, but that doesn't mean that I will do what you want. I get the final say and I don't particularly care if you like it or not.

A monarchy is one ruler. If there is a king and queen, the king gets final say, and I'm having none of that.
