I've been doing some traveling lately and when I travel, I track down the local scrapbook and stamp stores. I have noticed that some stores are really nice and clean and well-organized. On the other hand, some stores are a cluttered up mess. I've been in a few that had so much of the owner's personal mess in the classroom space that I would have found it difficult to crop there. ? So what's your LSS like?

Ohhh, I miss the days when I'd seek out lss while traveling!! .....and there were SO MANY to visit! I even made a layout years ago where I cut out the shape of the state and added small piks of me in front of an lss (or more) there.... But to answer your question---- I haven't actually been to my closest LSS in quite a while, but it was always very cute and uncluttered, and I assume it still is... ...and alll the ones we USED to go to nearby (all closed now!) were never cluttered---that would've bugged me! Hey...., thanks to your post, maybe I'll go to the lss closest to me (AMAZED they're still open!!!) and buy some stuff...!!!

No. The one I go to is the CUTEST little place and is VERY well organised and clean. I LOVE it. She keeps me coming back.

The one we have left in town is very neat and organized. The sections are well-organized with good signage, prices were easy to see, etc. I think they just celebrated their 20th anniversary, so that says a lot.
There used to be another (just closed in January) that was like a "part-time" store. It seemed very much to be just a hobby business for the owner, as they weren't open much, odd hours, etc up until the last year or so when they had more normal hours. That one wasn't really a mess, but it was cluttered. It would take forever to look through the stuff, because she had stuff in bins on tables, not much vertical storage, paper racks, etc. And figuring out a price drove me crazy- stuff would always "accidentally" get put in the wrong bin, so it wasn't really 4 sheets of that pp for $1, it was only 2 for $1. She closed her store last month and is selling it at monthly crops that she's organizing downtown. Same thing happened to me with the wrong prices when I went to check out her stuff. I don't know why I bother.

I know what you are talking about. There used to be one an hour or so from me that I wanted to shop at, but it was so crowded I could barely stand it. She had to clean off tables if I wanted to work there.

Sadly, there is no LSS left in our entire state, when in the heyday there were 13 within an hour of me and 20 within 2 hours. All gone.

No. It is neat and organized. The staff may use a table or two to make projects and page kits, etc., but it is never messy and they never take up the entire crop area.

What is this LSS of which you speak?
A store, you can go to, in your town, to buy scrapbook stuff? Interesting concept.
I have half a row of tim whatshisface at Michaels and a bunch of cutesy stickers. Whine.

How sad is it ? I'd love a messy LSS compared to Zero LSS we have now. I miss the good old days. The excitement of new product and meeting friends with similar hobby.
OTOH I've been to the messy stires and they make me crazy! Are other hobby stores like this? Just so many LSS seemed to be part of the owners hobby, not a business, I never understood the attraction.

We don't have an lss but a really neat paper rafting store....it is full of art and card techniques and fun to shop in......not the same as an lss but a nice addition to online shopping....

The one store that is remotely close to me (as in, 45 minutes away) is relatively new and very neat and organized. They just don't have very much. The only other stores are over an hour or more away and I haven't been to either of them in months and months (it's winter and I don't like driving long distances when the weather is iffy) so I have no idea if they are organized or not. Having owned a store myself, I will say it's a pet peeve of mine to go into a messy, cluttered, dusty store and try to find anything. I worked hard to keep things organized and clean in the store. I view it as a customer service issue when the store is such a mess that the customer is negatively affected.

We have a good sized one in town. The customer part is very organized and the displays are nice. They have a large area behind the cash registers where they have to keep all of the wafer thin dies (boxes and boxes) and that part is pretty cluttered. I am sure they had a few stolen and learned their lesson.

My lss is a gorgeous store, clean, well stocked and filled with all sorts of shabby chic trims and buttons and homewares, but that is not my style at all and I often struggle to find things to use that fit in with my style.
We used to have a store a few minutes from where I live it was small and super packed, I have no idea how they did classes as it was so dark and tiny in there and they only sold the absolute budget brands and products that were years out of style. It was sad because she was lovely and friendly and the other closest store which was gorgeous and spacious had an absolute dragon running it.

There are two in my area. One is very tidy and well-organized, the other is jam packed with stuff to the point of feeling disorganized and cluttered.

The one in my town is well organized and neat. Although it can be a bit crowded. But, there are others in my area that seem more like the owners personal storage space if the owner was a hoarder.

The one closest to me is a little of both. It is small but is organized and stock full of inventory. I stopped in one day and they were hosting a crop so all the crop tables were in the middle and the stocked racks were pushed to the sides. I walked out because it was too uncomfortable.
We used to have one store that was organized, but they had a resident cat that would sit on the crop table and counter where you paid. I am very allergic to cats, so once was enough for me and I couldnt buy anything because of the cat hair.

We have virtually no LSS left in Minnesota either. When we did have them, they were neat and tidy and it was a pleasure to shop at them. I just wish some would open again.

I am surprised so many of you don't have an LSS anymore. We don't have as many as before, but still have quite a few in Western Washington. One of our best just closed (Scrapbook Nook in Kent). But, a new one is opening up in the same city (Running with Scissors).
A group of friends and I are participating in something called the Northwest Paper Chase and will be attempting to visit 25 stores in March. These are all in Westetn Washington or the Portland, OR area.

Same for me. The one closest to me is clean and organized, the next store closest to me is like the owners storage space including having a small dog in a pen.

I wish it was during the same time as the Portland Creating Keepsakes convention. That made it nice to stop at stores on the drive down to the convention. But since they moved the convention to February I don't like to repeat my Portland drive so close. Plus we came down here for the dog show in January too

Have you checked out PaperMade in Apple Valley? It's the newer store I mentioned in my post that opened last fall. The store is very nice and neat, it's just not very big. It's on the storefront side of October Afternoon's warehouse. They sell October Afternoon (of course), American Crafts brands like Pebbles, Dear Lizzy and Maggie Holmes, Crate Paper and Simple Stories among others, a lot of Ranger products, some stamps and dies, cardstock, etc.

I'm very lucky I still have several within an hour of me in Southern California. For the most part they are all clean and relatively organized. Although some are cluttered with very old product.

I have two within a 15 minute drive and both are well organized. I don't go to either of them very often since one is small and has a limited selection and the other is like a scrap antique store selling 15 year old stickers at full price.

I have two LSS's that I go to regularly (by that I mean once every couple months), and by local, I mean within a 40-mile distance... they're both pretty neat and organized, and have both recently moved into new spaces. One has downsized their scrapping stuff, but increased the amount of fabric and sewing/quilting stuff they carry... I have about $40 in store credit there, and the last few times I've gone in, I haven't found ANYthing I've wanted to buy at ALL. (this worries me, because I used to LOVE that store and the merchandise they carried!). The other store has actually moved into a larger space, I think, but since it's arranged by 'topic' and I don't scrap that way, I usually don't buy much of anything there, either.
I don't like the feeling I get when I walk out of a LSS without having bought at least ONE thing, lol!!
ETA: 'scrap antique store' is a good term-- I've seen some places like that before!! (I may even OWN some things that actually fit into that category, lol!!)

The last one I was in had a wow stash of unopened Coluzzles. At full price.

In the front of the store, it's neat and organized. In the back area it's very messy. The owner holds crops, empties boxes of new merchandise and does her computer work in the back area. It encompasses 1/2 of the store.

I have been to many LSS in different states and never found a cluttered or disorganized store. All had empty tables for customers to work at. Michigan, Connecticut, Ohio and South Carolina

thankfully mine is very neat and organized. it's a big store packed full of stuff but they manage to keep it very neat. I couldn't shop at a store that doesn't take pride in the presentation of their merchandise.
