OMG.. My 9yr old accidently bumped hard into my big toe and my nail is over 70% off (somewhat raised but still connected at the base). There is blood and holy hell it hurts!!!!!! I think it would be best to go to a podiatrist.. thinking they would have the good drugs there to make sure I don't feel anything if they need to pull it out. I dh thinks I should go to Urgent care. ugh.. not sure what to do.

I'm an endurance runner and for us, losing toe nails are par for the course. I've always just taken pain meds for the pain, and let nature run its course.

ouch!! just thinking about it makes my toes curl
the urgent care may be able to give you something for the pain until you can get into the dr

I agree. I've had numerous nails fall off due to endurance sports....hurts for a few days and then it's nothing.

That happened to me once. Stubbed my big toe on a fence post and developed a huge blood blister under the nail. Eventually, the blood blister popped (with my help and it was GROSS) and the nail fell off. Stupid toenail has never been quite the same. It's like... weird. Slightly smaller than it used to be? Mutant toe. Gross.
Good luck! Hope your toe feels better soon!

Both me and DS #1 have lost toenails over the years. We take Tylenol and wait for them to do their thing. I'm glad you were able to get yours taken care of quickly. Feel better!

I managed to knock my little toe nail off once, just by putting a wellie on. (I was sockless at the time. Not a good idea). It looked as if I had slaughtered a large mammal, there was so much blood, and the pain was awful. I went to A&E and they numbed it and treated it with silver nitrate if I remember correctly. It hurt for days.
You have my sympathy. Am glad you got it sorted and hope that it doesn't hurt to much.
What is it about toe nails that makes them so cringeworthy?

OUCH! I would be a big baby if that happened to me. Being diabetic I think it was wise to see a doc. Hope it feels better soon.

i once was clipping my toenails and the nail cracked all the way down. It was so painful and after a day looked pretty infected. I went right to a podiatrist and he numbed it up and cut it off. Gave me something for the infection too. I'm glad I had that done as the pain relief was instant. My toe nail never quite grew back so it is narrower now. Being that you are diabetic, I think it was smart to see a podiatrist.

Youch! I have a second toenail that turned black and fell off as the result of a half-marathon. The first week, before it came off was freaking painful.
I lost a big toenail a couple of summers ago. As soon as a little had grown back at the bottom, I used a glue on French toenail that you can buy in sets at CVS/Walgreens/Target. Each one lasted for 10 days to 2 weeks, and that way I could wear sandals without looking like a freak.

Dad heated up a pin and poked through the nail to relieve the pressure of the blood underneath. It wasn't too bad and the nail was saved. However, my mother was so freaked out she went into the kitchen and opened a ton of cans with the electric opener to mask any noises from the living room. I don't know why she thought that made any sense, but the dog liked it.
