I've always had garments that came with the ribbon loops sewn inside the shoulder seam. Although I get the point that they're supposed to be used to help keep the clothes on the hanger, I always snip them off. Otherwise, they seem to migrate out of armholes or up through the neckline and odd pieces of ribbon peeking out of your outfit isn't really a good look.
Now though, more and more pieces of clothing - especially sweaters/knits - are coming with a single piece of ribbon sewn across the garment from shoulder to shoulder. I've googled (hard to know what to call it though to look it up) and it seems to be designed to help the item hang straighter on you without shoulder slippage.
But man, it's annoying to have to dodge that ribbon when you slip a sweater on. You have to aim it to land in the back and not the front. I've managed to wear sweaters for years that didn't have this new innovation so I'm tempted to snip the ribbon. But yet, I hesitate.
So, as you can probably tell, it's a pretty quiet Sunday morning. I'm sitting here sipping coffee and thinking these deep thoughts. And knowing how the peas love deep thoughts, I felt compelled to share.
Please add your observations to this thoughtful discussion. I'm always up for learning something new!

I am a snipper-of all things like ribbons, loops, tags and those goofy plastic strips. I have teeny tiny sewing scissors so I snip really close to the edges so that I don't end up scratching like a crazed baboon.

I didn't know it was supposed to help the garment hang better on the person! thought it was like the loops - for hanger purposes.
I say snip it off. It's weird and like you said, you have to aim just right when putting it on. No time for that, lol!

I snip the hanging loops off and have also been snipping the shoulder to shoulder ribbons off because they are such a pain. However I have wondered if doing this with the shoulder to shoulder ribbons makes a difference to the way the garment hangs on the body so will be interested in reading answers to this.

Cut them right off immediately. I can't stand them and it annoys me if I see somewhere wearing a top and they are poking out. I thought the shoulder to shoulder thing was to keep them on the hanger at the store.
I am now cutting off tags/labels too. I think I have an personal issue with this lol.

Lol deep thoughts by Jack Handy.
I always snip the loops for the same reason as you. I leave that single piece across the back and appreciate it, because it really does help avoid slippage -that moment when a boat neck top unintentionally turns into an off-the-shoulder look.
Other random thoughts to keep you occupied: do you keep your eyes open or shut when getting your teeth cleaned? Mine are shut.

I've never known/heard they were to make them hang better while wearing. I don't mind those single ribbon ones though, but I do tend to get rid of the most of the 2 ribbon loops because, as you say, they migrate. I tend to use non-slip hangers for jumpers etc that need help staying on!I would love to have space to put all jumpers on shelves but I haven't

I HATE those things. I never keep them. I know their purpose is to keep the garment on the hanger...that's why I have non-slip hangers.

Over here we seem to be getting a lot of tops with a thin, transparent rubbery shoulder to shoulder strip. The bad news is it sometimes ends up in front of my body if I am inattentive when dressing. The good news is that when I get it right the neckline of the garment does seem to hang better and it doesn't irritate my skin or show. I regret cutting off the first ones I encountered.
The ribbon loops on either side: gone, asap. I bought a sleep set with a pair of boy shorts as the bottoms; to make them hang right on display they had about a half-metre of ribbon on either side and an extra piece in the middle. I throw this kind of stuff in the wash before wearing it- tangled round everything, what a pain.
Deep thoughts and first-world problems on a Sunday afternoon.

Thank you, Spongemom, for bringing this important issue out of the shadows and into the arena of rational discussion that is NSBR. Well, now I realize that I'm in the minority because I usually leave them, and use them when I hang my clothes. I guess I look at them like those mattress tags, as if they come with a warning not to cut them off.

It looks like this bunch definitely leans toward being wanton snippers! Lol.
We could also talk about those new security tags that are sewn into the seams of clothes. Ann Taylor is big on those. I hate when I forget to snip one and can feel it later with the garment on. And even when you do snip them, it leaves a ridge because the material that the tag is sealed into is so thick.

Ok, so, you are my spiritual sister. Yes, I snip these annoying things off. Like immediately. I can't stand these, or tags, or anything that is going to irritate me. I wore a dress shirt just this week and didn't realize that there was a tag off to the side I hadn't spinned off. UGH. I was irritated the entire day.
My sister said that I was that baby that cried and cried and cried just because there was a tag on my onesie.

That reminds me of my oldest son. He went through a phase when he was a toddler when he was obsessed with "sock bumps." You'd get that little wiggling body all dressed down to socks and shoes, only to have him start crying about, "Owie. There's bumps." Shoes and socks would come off, get all smoothed out, and carefully put back on. "Ouchie. Bumps, mommy." We'd go several rounds at times before he was satisfied. To get through that phase, we bought every type of sock on the market, tried buying shoes slightly large for more room, distracting him, and more. I thought I'd lose my mind. But he's 23 now, so obviously I did survive it and he did, too.

Add me to the "snip them off" list.
I wouldn't have bought the top in the first place if it didn't hang properly on me.

Guess I'm in the minority, so long as it does not scratch or irritate me, the ribbons and the like stay.

The only time I don't clip the double loops off is when it is evening wear. It does help distribute the weight more evenly on the hangar, especially if there is any heavy embellishment on the dress. I have not seen this single ribbon/rubber strip on any clothing yet. Will have to keep an eye out for it. And in recent months I've become a label/tag clipper when I never have been in the past. The last few things I've bought have had the scratchiest, most annoying tags ever. I'm pretty sure my sensitivity level hasn't changed that much. DD on the other hand has been whacking labels out of her clothes since she was 4! This is me too. Although I think I have become more sensitive to things scratching or tickling me. I haven't purchased any "nice" clothing since I've stopped working, so I haven't encountered the single strap yet, although it does sound like something I would like on an item with a large neck opening so it doesn't slip around, suddenly showing more than I intended. In fact, if I were still working, I can think of a few outfits where I would retrofit a ribbon into them! I immediately cut all tags and labels out of a garment once I have tried it on at home and made the decision to keep it. I have a pair of scissors on a chain attached to the wall right beside my washing machine for just this purpose. Those long hanger ribbons feel like a stray hair tickling me, especially the clear rubbery ribbon type. I hate that.

I leave the side loops on for hangers, but the one time I've encountered the single ribbon across the back it annoyed the crap out of me and it had to go. It made the shirt uncomfortable the way it ran over my shoulders.

Yes, I have those too. But sometimes that "huggableness" means you can't even get the clothes ON the hanger. Some turn into a struggle!

If it needs a ribbon sewn across the back to hang properly when worn, then it isn't likely a garment I'll buy and wear. Just make it properly in the first place - I am super fussy about fit and if the ribbon makes the fit, it's going to sag somewhere else because of te varying amounts of give in the structure of the garment.
I've had a few tops with that ribbon and I always cut it out anyway. It peeks out the back if you don't.
