My 9 year old has a concert next week and needs something to wear. It is really hard to find pants for him that fit. He is between 5'1" and 5'2" and weighs about 135. He has a pretty big build all over but it seems that pants are always too tight in the thighs and butt. I am thinking that men's sizes may be best now but am not sure...I don't want to spend too much time or money looking for something that he is only going to wear once, but want him to be comfortable as well. Where would you look? Kohl's and Old Navy come to mind but I am not sure where else to try. Thanks!

At that age, my DS wore Lands End husky pants. I think they may even have 30% off one item right now.

Do you have a Platos Closet near you? My son is hard to fit as well (tall and skinny), so I took him there to try on different brands to see how they fit. It gave us a good idea of which brands fit him best without having to go to several stores.

Kohls is where I got black dress pants for my oldest who has recently hit 5'1". Around here, it seems to be the only store that actually carries dress pants year-round and have more than 3 to choose from. I'd be trying pants in the men's department which are cut differently than boys' sizes. If the length is too long, you can always have them hemmed.

Sears has husky sizes that may give him that little bit more room he needs.

Wow. His height and weight put him at the smaller end of men's sizes. That has got to be tough with a kid his age. Kohl's is probably your best bet. You'll probably need to get the pants hemmed though.

Do you have a Gap outlet near you? My younger DS was shorter and stockier during middle school. The Gap had pants with an adjustable waist band that fit him beautifully. The adjustable part was hidden inside the waistband so you couldn't tell. I used to get him jeans and khakis at the outlet all of the time for very little money.

When we had a one shot wear item, I always went to Walmart. Generally, by the time the boys were in the 5'1ish height, we would have better luck in the men's department. But I am cheap so maybe you don't want to listen to me.

I don't know that they can get the pants there in time, but LL Bean and Land's End both have children's sizes that run up pretty high (I know LL Bean goes to an 18), and the clothes tend to run roomy. I found L.L. Bean to be good for my oldest, who was small-adult sized at 11 but still looked like and wanted to look like a kid.

For that price, you can get them hemmed!!

Thanks. I stopped at old navy and found some huskies that were on clearance for $5 so I am hoping they fit. If not, we will look in the adult departments. When looking for jeans at the beginning of the year we had a very hard time finding jeans for him and the older son (who is a little smaller but still hard to fit due to body shape). Neither of them like to wear jeans but they needed at least one pair. We tried all kinds of brands that had husky sizes and only found one style and brand that fit each of them the best (urban pipeline for one and old navy loose fit for the other).

If the pants you bought don't work out try Sears or JCPenney. Ask staff to help you pick them out. They seem to be able to grab the pair you need right off the rack from your description. Good luck.

That's about my son's size and he wears Old Navy. We do have to take up the pants, because in order to fit around his muscular legs, he needs a size that doesn't have the length he needs.

Last year ds had to have dress pants, a dress shirt, dress shoes and a tie for his 8th grade farewell / awards ceremony. He doesn't wear stuff like this typically and I didn't want to spend a lot of $ on something he'd wear once.
So, we visited the local Goodwill store and lucked out on a shirt and pants for $5. He wore DH's tie and shoes.
