I am doing a long overdue cleaning of a large bookcase and came across an old unabridged dictionary of mine. I've had it so long I can't even remember where it came from. Dictionaries almost seem outdated with everything available online, and it's so massive I just want to get rid of it. Can anyone give me a reason NOT to toss it?

Sometimes, it's faster to look something up in a dictionary than it is to load Google or a dictionary app and type in what you're looking for. If you play Scrabble, a good print dictionary is invaluable.

I will always keep a paper dictionary at home. I like having a real place to look up words. Plus, even though I don't use it very often, I enjoy finding and reading other words when I'm looking up something -- I miss that in online dictionaries. Plus, I have several more that I use for tearing up for scrapbook layouts. I think I use an old dictionary page on at least 9/10 pages that I make!

I LOVE the scrapbook idea, although I don't scrapbook anymore. And I do agree about the joy of leafing through a dictionary and reading the extra sections in the beginning and end.

I would keep it, but I have a thing for dictionaries. I have an old battered one that lives on my desk right next to my work space at all times. I use it most days. i love the idea of tearing one up to put into scrapbooks.

I have one of those huge 20 pound dictionaries and while I never use it anymore, tossing it out doesn't happen either. I also have my high school dictionary with my maiden name in it that I keep for nostalgic reasons.

I also have one. It belonged to my father so it is special to me.
I love all the extra information available in the printed editions. I must say I use a smaller version for daily use.

I'd donate it to the library book sale if I didn't want to use it for crafting

I make cards from dictionary pages.
I've also printed pictures on a dictionary page, framed it and given it as a gift.

I would keep it. Paper dictionaries are becoming a thing of the past so I think it would be a good thing to keep.

Donate it to a high school. I know that our English teachers still have some in their classrooms for students to use.

I feel a bit faint just thinking of "getting rid" of an big unabridged dictionary! For years, my favorite answer to the question "what would you save if ..." was "I have this really great dictionary"! Clearly ... I'd keep it ... but then, within arms reach of my desk chair are 2 dictionaries, a thesaurus and a Bartlett's ... and dictionary.com is on my desktop, my iPad and my iPhone -- looking up words is about the only thing I enjoy on my Nook. I've purchased old dictionaries from thrift shops for crafting purposes -- I have no intention of ripping up my own copies! Keep it -- you never know when you'll have to grab something and head for the desert island! (I just had to check the number of "s" for an arid region v. a tasty sweet!)

I make cards from dictionary pages. I've also printed pictures on a dictionary page, framed it and given it as a gift. This. I have a skeleton printed on the page with the word "skeleton" and a key with a tag labeled "skeleton key" glued on and framed that I put out at Halloween. I have several old time calendar date pages printed on dictionary and book pages for certain holidays. I just love the look. You could use the pages for altered art or banner backgrounds. Dictionary page art.
