Yeah, one just opened not far from us and I joined. For a month. Figured it was cheap and it would give me a place to do the compound lifts I can't do at home. Nope. Pretty much if you want to do something beyond a treadmill or elliptical or some really light weights on machines, you are in the "meathead" territory and they'll ask you to stop. I don't know why they even have any free weights, because they seem to actively discourage people from using them. That's your specific PF. Mine doesn't have that vibe. They have free weights, Smith machines, and everything. A few times I've taken my teen DS with me, and there have been some trainers there who have given him weight-lifting tips. Don't paint them all with the same brush. ?? I was only commenting on the one near me.

A lot of people are into the whole IIFYM (if it fits your macros) craze. I follow people on Instagram who will eat an entire pizza in one sitting, and they're like, "it fits my macros!!" I think the idea behind it has been taken out of context. Maybe the gym is catering to that?
ETA: I agree that eating the occasional bagel or slice of pizza is fine, but I think it's a little odd for a gym to offer that.

I've been a PF member since November. I know that they do the pizza and bagels but I've never once been there at the right time.
I know people like to rag on PF but I love it. I paid $99 up front for the whole year. I use the machines, the free weights, the treadmills. It's always clean and rarely crowded. Nothing is ever out of order.
I see a wide range of body types and have always felt welcome. Obviously, some people will want the goodies, some won't.
If a once a month pizza and bagel is enough to derail your fitness plan, PF isn't the place for you.

If it's only once a month, it certainly fits within the "everything in moderation" philosophy. I'd rather they have potato chip and ice cream nights personally.....if I'm going to eat crap, donuts aren't my favourite!

I belong to Planet Fitness & noticed they do a pizza night. Not a problem for me, I don't like pizza. I find it rather funny, but I guess it's a way to keep business. As far as free weights, our PF has them & I've seen some pretty serious lifters. They haven't said a thing to them. They discourage loud noises, but it states that on the door. I go with my daughter & we jog on the treadmill & chat, no one has said anything. It seems to be a pretty clean, laid back gym. I like it. Per PF themselves, they don't have squat racks, or Olympic benches, or dumbbells over 75lbs.
Their entire business model is predicated on discouraging people to work out. They sign up as many people as possible at a price so low that it's more convenient to continue paying the fee than to cancel membership. One club here in the GTA had 6,000 within 3 weeks of opening. Every month is January.
Which is, I guess, great for members who stick it out and are happy with what equipment they actually have there. They get to work out at bargain prices at clubs paid for by people who pay the fees and don't work out.
If everyone who signed up continued to go to the club, there wouldn't be room to move and the equipment would quickly wear out. That's why they actively discourage the 'meat heads' by not having heavier weights, essential equipment, and having a 'lug alarm'. FTR, I admittedly grunt on occasion. It's an unfortunate by-product of exertion while strength training.

I belong to two gyms: one being Planet Fitness. I've been a member for almost two years now. I have NEVER ONCE grabbed a slice of pizza, bagel or a Tootsie Roll from the counter on the way out. Its called will power. I don't give a flying fig what they offer, I am not taking it. And if you decide to? Your choice. Who really cares? I find people use this as a way to talk down in regards to PF. I personally get exactly what I want from their gym at the price of $10 a month.

See my previous post about the people who laugh at the pizza and bagels as a way to make fun of PF members. Whatever. And my PF is seriously the CLEANEST gym around!

I agree it's s bit odd. I've belonged to a few gyms and it's not something I've ever come across.

I go to Planet Fitness. The first Monday of the month is pizza night, and the first Tuesday morning is bagels. Guess what? You don't have to eat them. Ok, I do find one aspect of it odd then. If they have two food days per month, why put them back to back like that? (Maybe they want to get the carbs all over and done with in one fell swoop? )

I was not talking down about PF. I simply asked a question. I have plenty of will power. I simply don't understand why a gym would offer that kind of food.
Just a question that's all.

I was not directing my reply to you personally. Just a general "you" per say, who I come across via web articles from time to time talking badly about Planet Fitness. Sorry I wasn't more clear.

Different equipment? Or one near home and the other near work?

Different equipment? Or one near home and the other near work? I belong to Krav Defense which is an Israeli fighting technique. I love my classes there. It's actually Krav Cardio that I do so it's 30 minutes of "something" (i.e. small free weights, HIIT type exercises, ropes, kettlebells, etc. Always something different) and 30 minutes of kickboxing. The problem is I cannot make class every day because I prefer the 10am only offered 3x a week. So I always kept my PF membership for the off days when I couldn't make Krav. I go to Planet Fitness for additional cardio and some free weights. I'm a HUGE night owl so 10pm workouts are right up my alley.

We do the two membership thing at my house too. One gym is paid for by my husband's job, but it's a "dry" gym - no pool or jacuzzi, steamroom or sauna. He pays membership at another gym across town for the pool and other offerings.
Oh, and the other smaller gym near our house on the outskirts of town, they opened a bakery (!) location in their lobby. I am baffled by this. A bakery! Mkay.

Thanks for replying gina , I was assuming that it was two traditional gyms and couldn't figure out the purpose of going to two separate places.

I've never been to pizza night/donut morning, but I love Planet Fitness. It's perfect for me, but I can see how it might not appeal to people who workout differently.

I'm a member of five different gyms. Three are big national chains and two are smaller, local gyms. Four of the memberships are bundled together. I can pay $25/month for one or for all four. The other one I joined years ago, before the four, when my husband joined it. Everyone in our family has a membership to it, but they don't to the other four of mine. So if we go as a family, we go to that one. When I was a good girl and I went regularly, I would pick and choose based on a variety of things. Classes that were offered (or instructors that I preferred), availability of a pool, location, friends that were members, etc.
