Normally when we travel, Remy the killer shih Tzu goes to stay with my mother. We have a weekend coming up and my mom is having knee replacement surgery so she won't be able to watch him.
I have a cousin who is 25, lives at home, and frequently pet sits for many of her parents' friends. My aunt (her mom, my mom's sister) says she likes to do it to get out of the house and we don't have to pay her. We're asking her to - sleep here two nights (in our bed, with our dog - he loves to snuggle), - take him for three short walks a day, - 2 just to pee, typically takes 5-10 min for the pee walk - one to poop and pee, up to 20-30 min for the poop walk, longest walk would be less than a mile - just be around with him, watch tv/play video games - arrive Friday after work - one potty walk at about 10 pm - take him out within 12 hours of the night walk for a morning potty walk - take him for longer poop walk anywhere from 11a-4p - hang with him either during the day or in the evening for several hours - Sat night potty walk - Sun morning potty walk - make sure he has fresh, clean water and dry food in his bowl - we will leave codes for Wifi, Netflix, we have tons of movie channels, dvds, she can order on demand - DS has xbox and assorted other video games she can play - we will buy snacks and soda, and take out menus of our favorite places - there will be plenty to eat
We should be home by noon on Sunday.
what would you expect to pay a pet sitter for that length of time and work with the dog? He's a little high maintenance in that he needs to be walked to go potty, and the poop will need to be picked up and brought home, but he's a 15 lb dog so it's not a giant poop. She does have two dogs and two cats and has pet sit for both before. She's met our dog several times and he likes her, but we will have her over a couple of times before the weekend.

I have a friend who dogs sits for people on occasion. She charges $75 per night. At a minimum I'd expect to day $125 for what you described, especially if you'd like her to be a pet sitting option for you in the future..
I only have two cats. I pay a pet sitter $20 per day to stop by and spend a half hour with them each day.
I live in a *not cheap* city if that makes any difference.

I pay my mom $50 a night to stay with our 2 dogs. They do their business in the back yard, so there is no walking or picking up poop required. I fill the fridge and leave an extra $20 in case she wants to order a pizza or something.

We pay a friend $200 for 5 days. He stays here with a full fridge and freezer and has the run of the house. He feeds the 5 dogs in the morning and night. They have a doggie door, so no walking. He does feed the horses grain in the afternoon, but we put out enough hay while we are gone. This friend stays here just like he would his own house. Goes to work in the mornings and back in the afternoons. He is hesitant to take any money since he calls it a vacation from being at work/farm. He lives at the farm where we all work.

Thanks for all the feedback. On craigslist I was seeing anything from $35 a night to $75 a night and then weekly rates.

Since she doesn't want to be paid, I'd think $50 per day.

I have a 23 year old who sits for our shi tzu. He does exactly what you are asking and I pay him $40 per day and then round up to the nearest $50. He always seems thrilled to be asked.

Our former neighbors had 5 dogs (3 too many per the home owner's association!) and would pay a neighbor teen $25 per day. This was just to make sure doggies had fresh food & water daily, watching to make sure piggy dog didn't steal whimpy dog's dinner, then putting all of them in the garage for the night. When said teen did not perform duties as required and we had to step in when 4 of the 5 dogs were barking and howling loudly at midnight, neighbor brought us lots of high end shampoo/hair goodies (no $$ though).
So ... $25 per day seems pretty reasonable if they do what's needed, especially if they get run of the kitchen plus entertainment via video rentals, etc.

Wow, I got a deal when we went on vacation! We were gone 10 days and paid $250. Dog sitter was 19yo college kid. He stayed overnight probably half the time. He had full use of the house, any food, drinks, cable TV, etc. Didnt have to walk the dog as my dog just goes in our fenced backyard. But the days he didn't stay the night he came over for a few hrs to just hang out. Plus took him out twice a day. It would have cost about the same to board him.
