Diagnose my kid!!!! My 18 yr old dd has has a cold/sinus/sore throat for about a week. She called me at work asking if I could take her to the doctor. She is a college freshman 20 minutes away. She dosen't get sick often. We went to the doctor she complained of a headache (sinus) sore throat, tenderness on her rt side. Dr diagnosed sinus infection strep and yep your side is tender, not appendicitis. Fast forward 4 hours after taking 3 Advil (as per dr) she is in severe abdominal pain. She is a little dramatic usually but this has me concerned but the dr wasn't concerned so....do I take her to ER, urgent care said they couldn't do much for her. She is trying laying on heating pad now. It does help slightly to curl up in a ball.

Gall stones? ovarian cyst?
If her pain continues, I'd be back at an ER and see what the dr. there thinks.

I had heartburn one night. I am talking really bad heartburn. Then pins and needles pain in my stomach. It hurt quite a bit but not terribly. Then I was in the fetal position thinking I must have eaten something really weird (I was in Japan after all...) and when the pain wouldn't go away (I waited 12 hours) I went to a doctor, then to another doctor...medicine is different there. Finally I got referred to a hospital that does surgery and had acute appendicitis. OMG that was terrifying!
Side pain is pain for a reason. I wouldn't mess around with it. I waited and suffered 12 hours too long. I have a polaroid of my appendix in the kitchen somewhere. It was weird! And it was big too! Ready to burst!

Mono? It can cause some kind of spleen problem and you get side pain. Very common among college kids.

Appendicitis or ovarian cyst? You could have her try jumping up and down. I believe if she can't do it without a lot of pain that is a symptom of appendicitis. Hope the pain goes away soon!

All they said was they couldn't do anything for her? Abdominal pain in a female??? Good grief, what about a CT scan, an ultrasound, something? Did her doctor or someone in the ER do a pelvic exam? What about drawing blood to see what's going on? What's her TEMPERATURE??? Is she urinating? When was her last BM? Last period? Did they ask her all of this? Poor thing----if she's in that much pain, I would take her somewhere else! HUGS!!!! I came VERY close to having peritonitis (when the lining of your abdominal organs is infected and can be fatal)....after telling them I could NOT urinate , had a temp of 103, a pelvic exam, CT scan, labwork, and something else, they FINALLY figured it out and I was put on VERY STRONG IV antibiotics, in the nick of time .....I hope your DD is okay!

Doctors office and many urgent care places don't have CT, ultrasound or other imaging equipment. So, yes, they may not have been able to do much for her. I would go on to an er with her. But, it seems her initial complaint was "tenderness" on her right side and that has progressed to severe pain. Had she told the dr she was in severe pain he/she may have not been so nonchalant about it.

I ended up in the ER with one of mine for severe pain around where we thought his appendix should be. At the time, he was running a fever and felt awful. After a bit of drama, it turned out that his lymph nodes were extremely inflamed.
I didn't know this, but your lymph nodes go all the way down your torso and across your stomach. If your daughter is already ill, this is a possibility.

I would take her to the ER. I tend to err on the side of caution with my dd and a $75 copay would be worth the peace of mind for me. Severe abdominal pain could be serious.

The doctor said to take 3 Advil. The pain got worse and not better and certainly not the same.
Time to make a phone call. Call the office where she was seen and speak to the on call doctor for further instructions.

ER nurse at your service....
Can you press on the area of the pain and RELIEVE the pain? If so, go to the ER, like now. That's "rebound tenderness" and often a + sign of a hot apendix.
If not, it could still be an appendix. It could also be an ovarian cyst.
The only real diagnosis for either one is labs (specifically a WBC) and CT for the appendix. For the ovarian cyst possibility, she would need an ultrasound. If she has an Ob/gyn she might want to start with that.
A visit to the ER may not be a bad idea especially if she is having that rebound tenderness in the right, lower abdomen.
let us know! meredith

Meant to add that if she is having right UPPER quadrant pain, that could be a gallbladder issue. What does her poop look like? She probably doesn't want to talk about it but if her poop is white-ish or yellow in color, that's a gallbladder issue.
Burping? Diarrhea? Any other symptoms?

I guess you learn something everyday! OP I hope your DD is okay.

So we went to the ER. After about 10 seconds the doctor said he thought it was Mono and after blood tests and an ultrasound it was. Boo to the college health services who said she was fine just a cold and her doctor who "guessed" the strep test would come back positive and pretty much ignored the stomach pain.
The good thing is I get to spend time with my college girl!
By the way my copy is 250.00 dollars eererrrgggg!

Same thing happened to me my freshman year in college, which is why I guessed mono. Misdiagnosed as strep by college clinic, diagnosed with mono in the ER when I went home for my birthday.
Hope she is feeling better soon!
