Fingernail keeps splitting in the same place

I get this on my thumb. No ideas. It went away for awhile but it's back again. I've even taken those supplements for nails and it did nothing about the splits.

I have one nail that cannot grow past a certain point or it will split and it also grows out differently. It's all because I slammed that finger in the door and damaged the nail. It's been this way for over 20 years now.

If it's going into the nailbed, I'd consult with my doctor. I remember my mom having a similar situation and she actually had part of the nail removed so it'd grow back in right.

I have a ridge, an indent really. and if the manicurist buffs my nail down so it is smooth, then my nail will split at that indent. it happens until the nail grows long enough for the indent to grow back in.
When I get a manicure I say No Buff.

My nails are pretty soft, even with taking hair & nail vitamins (and when I switched to prenatal vitamins when I got pregnant). I just keep my nails trimmed down so I don't have to worry about my nail hooking on something. The 2 worst offending fingers are my ring fingers on either hand. They both split down the middle if I let them grow a fraction of an inch.

I typically wear nail polish. If I take it off for a few days, the majority of my nails peel. It is so frustrating. Once the split grows out, they heal, so I assume it is the polish that causes it.

My left thumb has a split in it and it can hurt. I developed it a few years ago and have to keep it very short or it gets caught on everything in the world. It is really annoying. It also looks ugly even though it is little. Some people were blessed with nails. I have good hair. My nails are awful!

About five years ago I had a bad case of shingles that was on my right hand. It left scars on my index finger and damaged the nail bed. The nail on that finger splits all the time in the same place. I agree with the poster who suggested that your nail bed may have been damaged at some point.

A recurrent nail split is due to damage to the nail bed. It's like a scar where hair won't grow...once the area has been damaged the nail won't grow properly from that little area. The manicurist could have caused that or it could have been caused by damage in another way. Either way, it's probably here to stay so you could have a gel nail permanently just on that finger maybe.

I slammed my fingernail in the padded close on the freezer door -- just a second. Every since, that nail curves downward at the point where it was inside the door. It's like the nail is now a hook. So annoying. I had nice nails and now I have to keep them short because of that one nail.

I haven't read the entire thread but I would suggest keeping that nail coated with super glue. Flow a drop or two onto the nail, let it dry then buff and polish, or no polish if you don't wear it. Although if you don't wear colored polish You should always wear clear. If one coat of super glue isn't enough, do a second coat of the super glue. If you get lumps use an emory board to smooth the surface before polish. That should stop the splitting.

I've spent way too much time researching this... tried umpteen products, suggestions, praying lol... if the split has been there for more than a few months and you can see a whitish line from tip to middle or base of nail, it is likely here to stay.. the fix that works best is the brush on, tinted nail glue.. I use Kiss Vita Bond.. it is healthier for your nails than other nail glue or krazy glue... brush on a thin layer, file gently, let dry completely and apply polish.. thin coats.. thick coats lift easier and will lift the split and start that maddening process of the nail getting caught on things and splitting further down.. can't let the nail grow out too much tho.. the shorter the better... if you need a full set of 'matching' nails for a hot date or a wedding, you can use a press on tip for that nail (I use an acrylic toenail since it's my thumb and those are short and don't need to be cut/filed down)... lastly, keep your cuticles well oiled... use cuticle oil, coconut oil or olive oil every night before bed.. healthy cuticles make healthy nails. Insurance didn't cover it, $100 for a bottle of nail polish that will strength weak nails.
