Another left thumbnail splitter, after shutting it in a door at age 11. My mother has the same though and she never damaged hers, so it may be also somewhat hereditary. I definitely have her hand genes.
As for what I do, just keep it short and don't pull at it when it splits, because then it tears right along the split rather than across the nail. And try to remember not to use it as a tool!

let me guess... we're supposed to google the 'kiss vita bond' product mentioned in the new poster's response? (the response that resurrected a 2-yr old thread?) just trying to figure out the angle... lol!

I have had a split thumbnail for more years than I know. Yes the damage is in the nail bed and no way to change it.
I kept polish on it all the time but when I get nervous I tend to mess with it and split the nail. I have never had acrylic nails so I went to a nail place and had them do just my thumb. I liked that so I did that every few weeks. Then I wondered if I could do it myself at home. I mean, it's just one nail. So I watched YouTube how to videos and bought some good quality product. So now I'm doing it myself. It's not as good as the professionals but it's just one nail and I'm getting better.
