As some of you know, I have worked really hard over the last couple of years to lose weight. I had high BP and cholesterol and was then diagnosed as pre-diabetic. That was the kick in the butt I needed to lose weight and get healthier.
Over those 2 years, I lost 50 lbs. Since we put our house on the market last Feb, I have gained 10 of those lbs back, but have stayed steady and not gained more. Stopped drinking Diet Coke last July. For the last few months, I have done less working out at the gym due to lower back pain. I'm still walking a lot, as much as I can during the Winter, and still go to the gym, just not enough.
My last Dr. appointment back in August was a great report. I was removed from both BP and cholesterol meds. I did okay without the BP meds for a few months, then had to go on BP meds again recently. I was really hoping this one last week would be the same. It wasn't. UGH
When I went in, I told her that I had a pain in my neck and she determined it was some type of muscle issue. I received my Dr. letter this morning and here are the basics... Cholesterol is high again. I need to go on a cholesterol lowering medication again, but my muscle enzyme is slightly elevated; cholesterol medications in the statin class can worsen muscle cramping. So, I instead, I need to start Coenzyme Q10, 400mg a day to help my liver process the muscle enzyme properly, drink LOTS of water and recheck in 2 weeks.
I now have to follow the American Heart Association diet to help lower my cholesterol.
This really sucks. I thought I was doing well! I am SO disappointed. I'm having a really hard time staying positive right now.
Please say a prayer that all will be better in 2 weeks and that my cholesterol will be normal at recheck in 3 months. Thanks!

I'm sorry! I know how you feel. I lost 40 lbs in 2013 and was hoping beyond hope to get off the BP and cholesterol meds. No such luck. My doctor would not hear of it. Ended up gaining back 20 lbs. because I guess I felt like oh well whatever, you know? Ironically he now has me taking a cholesterol med 'holiday' because I have been having a lot of muscle pain in the upper back/shoulder. He thinks it is from the med but I don't think it is. I think its from the BP med. Again, he won't hear of that. I should look into the CoQ10 stuff.
I hope things work out the way you want them to!

Good luck! I feel for you; my check-up last year showed elevated blood pressure for the first time ever (I've always been on the low end) and my weight has been gradually going up. I'm so frustrated because even though I've been active and my diet has actually gotten better, I can't seem to stop the gain! My doctor said it's probably due to age and hormones (I'm 44). My next physical will be in May and I admit, I'm worried!
I'll say a little prayer for good results and good health for you!

I'm sorry you are back on the meds you tried so hard to get rid of. I was just at the doctor a couple of weeks ago and he is going to put me back on cholesterol meds in the near future. I have been on a very restrictive diet for the last few months for another issue and my cholesterol should be really low and it's not. My doctor said your body makes it's own cholesterol and sometimes no matter how much you watch your diet, your cholesterol will still be high. I have also taken CoQ10 for years. Thankfully, I don't have high blood pressure, but I'm sure there are the same issues with that too, you can only do so much with diet and exercise. At least you are on top of the problem and doing the best for your long term health.

Sucks, doesn't it? I'm on bp meds and it looks like my dosage is going to have to go back up again shortly unless I can shift some more weight. A couple of years ago I was so focussed and determined and now I'm not. sigh.
You've managed in the recent past, you can do it again!
Best wishes to you that things improve and continue to improve.

No! No! No! You are not failing at all. Your cholesterol and bp are not always controllable by diet alone. Keep working on yourself -- your entire body is being helped by that weight loss and exercise and better eating. Your joints will be thanking you, and you'll be much better off in the long run.
You are a success in anyone's book!!!!!

Aw, KiKi, it isn't you!
The most current studies really point to your cholesterol levels being related to how much your body happens to produce and not what you eat after all. You could eat nothing but oatmeal and still have high cholesterol.
For some people blood pressure is the same way. I've been on BP meds since the month I turned 30 (22 years ago). I've never been overweight and I exercise. My mom is the same way. High blood pressure, no cause other than genetics.
Please don't set up meds as a "if I can't go without them, I am a failure" dilemma. You just may need them to be healthy, regardless of what weight you lose or what you eat. Being healthy is what is important, not the meds.
You are doing great! (((Hugs)))

For some people it really is about genetics and not diet or weight. I would not let this get you down. Sending positive thoughts.

First, be proud of yourself! I think my favorite motto is "Begin Again". It just covers so much, and reminds me there's never a time I have to stop trying! No matter what it is, we can accept a bit of floundering and jump right back in. You've got this. This is a small speedbump to help you further assess a few areas. Go forth little soldier.

You have really done a phenomenal job in your weight loss even if you gained 10 back. You will lose it again, sometimes it's just hard to keep it off in the winter months.
As far as your bp meds. I basically did the same thing. I lost weight, got off my meds and then a 6 months later had to go back on. My doctor told me when I went off that I still needed to monitor my bp because of what he called a "honeymoon period". He was right. I was bummed that I had to go back on but I wasn't a failure it was just something genetic. I just pop one little pill in the morning and call it good.
I am not really familiar with cholesterol but, it's probably genetic as well. Don't get down on yourself you have accomplished the hard part, weight loss.

Ditto maryannscraps and elaine. Your healthy lifestyle changes are something to be proud of, and they are making a difference in your life, even if you can't always see it or it doesn't always feel that way.
Good thoughts and prayers with managing your cholesterol, and I hope the pain in your neck recedes soon.

Only have a second to write, but this is EXACTLY why I went on statins to begin with!!! My levels weren't too drastically high, but it is in my family + the thumping in the back of my head/neck scared me enough to go on it. When I was on it, it went away. I tried to come off of it after reading all of the scary things about women and statins and how they are overprescribed, but my doctor told me that being menopausal (or even perimenopausal) + having it in the family, might be enough to make you go on it for a while. I was eating pretty well, not exercising though.......... so for me it was right to go on it for now. I hope you'll find peace with whatever decision you and your doctor choose. Good luck.
