I joined a book club that I found on Meet Up. I'm so excited and nervous at the same time. I need something new and fun in my life, but there are 76 members of this group, and I know NONE of them. LOL It's not been established for a really long time, only a few months, so everyone is just beginning to know everyone, which I think will make it easier than if it was around for a long time and they were already all pals.
The first meeting I will be going to is March 31. Wish me luck! I'm a very friendly, easygoing person, but I typically don't do well in groups where I don't know anyone at all. Not sure what possessed me to join such a group then, but I hope it is fun and I meet some awesome ladies.

Good luck - I'm sure you'll cope just fine I'm joining a Nordic Walking group tomorrow so I'll be in the same boat. The only person I've met is the leader but it's not such a large group as yours. Hope you have fun when it comes around

Good for you! I'd be feeling like how you are...I don't do well in large groups of people I don't know.

Cool! I did something similar when I started our neighborhood Bunco group in January. I only knew 2 of the ladies previous to starting the group. I was a little nervous, but we has so much fun, that wore off almost as soon as everyone showed up. You will have a great time and be so glad you did it.

My prediction: After a couple more months, the larger group will begin to break off into smaller groups as people start gravitating toward people that are similar to them in reading preferences, meeting preferences and the like. Once it starts breaking into smaller groups, the discussions will really take off and the smaller groups will become even stronger. I love my book club group. There are 12 of us, and we have found that is the perfect number of people to have a lively discussion. In the meantime, have a good time!

I'm somewhat intrigued as to how a book club will work with 70+ people! I hope you post after the meeting and report back. I can't even imagine where you could all meet!

Sounds good, enjoy your meeting! At least it hasn't been established for a long time so the other members are more or less in the same boat.

That is awesome!! Good for you for trying something new and outside your comfort zone. I'm sure you will have a fabulous time and I look forward to hearing about it after your first meeting I looked up local groups after that one meet up thread that was here a couple of weeks ago. I found a potential group that walks with their dogs. Now to just see if I can work my schedule around it

Hijacking this thread a bit.
How do you find a "meet-up group"? I am only on facebook (with high privacy settings) and not on twitter.
Thanks for any information.

Yay! I run a meetup.com group and Book Club is my most popular event I host it in my house so I limit the number to 15 (because that's how many I can comfortably seat in my family room) ... I always have a waitlist ... It's hard to get up enough courage to go to your first meetup but it's always a fun time in my group ... I actually have made a BFF through meetup so it is possible to meet some really great people My Book Club is more of a ladies social group ... we only talk about the book for a short time

The hostess puts on a three course meal and the rule is they can talk about anything until the dessert course and then talk has to move to the book.
Just T you have nothing to lose and so much to gain by stepping out of your comfort zone. Hope you have a great time.

Good for you for deciding to look for something then actually taking the leap to join. It can be scary. I started taking ballet. At 48 years old, having never taken it before. Very humbling, but I'm so glad I am doing it.

Good luck. I did something really "stupid" when I moved down here and went to a CTMH meeting at the home of the rep I didn't know... based on a PM that someone I didn't know sent to me at Splitcoast. And now I have some good cropping buddies.

Good for you! I hope you enjoy it. My book club director recommended a "chapter" of our club for my stepmom when my parents moved here, based on her interests. There are over 200 total in our Meetup group, but only about 10-12 per reading group. She is very happy in her group, and with the friends she's made. We are always welcome to read with any group, if another book interests us more than our groups selection.

Very humbling, but I'm so glad I am doing it. When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a ballerina but I never took a single a class. When I was in college, I took a beginning ballet class, but I was young and flexible and it was only one semester. I always vaguely wondered if they had classes for grown up beginners... ...you might have just inspired me. I am also 48, fluffy and limber was a long time age. But I could still try, right?
