South Carolina State is 10s of millions of dollars in debt. Some sources say 80+ million. Here is a link to a story about the school. www.wistv.com/story/28617799/sc-states-president-clean-slate-needed-for-university-to-thrive-againThe college is a historic black college, but should that fact keep the state from shutting it down? When do you stop putting money into the situation? I feel so bad for the students there. Why would anyone new go there when things are so uncertain? What do you think the state should do?

I'd be curious to know -- and that article doesn't tell me -- the extent to which the school's debts reflect state spending cuts in the first place. I worked for a state university in SC, and we went through substantial state funding cuts -- that we were called a "state" school was kind of amusing given the small percentage of our budget that was made up by state funds.
I had colleagues who went to SC State and they were pretty awesome. I otherwise do not know enough about the school and where it fits into meeting state educational needs to know how important it is to maintain as a campus.

epeanymous I am so glad you replied! I don't know much about college funding. I am sure it is complicated.

If you want a really short overview, here is a link to the declines nationwide in state support for public universities (note that it features South Carolina as an example of deep cuts): State Funding: A Race to the Bottom

What I would want to know is how does their debt compare to other universities in the State.
Are they the only school in that much debt?
I think that supporting the Historical Black Colleges is important but too a point!
