Hey all, it's my turn to request a kind thought or a prayer if you are so inclined. My younger brother was admitted to the ER last night with some pretty severe gastrointestinal problems. All I know at this time is that he for sure has pancreatitis but the cause isn't yet known. He's been having issues for at least a couple months. I'm scared for him and I'm just hoping and praying that he's going to be okay. His name is Pete. Thanks- Update: He was tested for a bunch of stuff and it was all inconclusive. He is doing a whole lot better today, all IVs were off and they released him tonight. They were trying to make a correlation between his fast heart rate, extremely low BP and the gastro issues and weren't having any luck making anything stick. They were more concerned with the irregular heartbeat and weren't dealing with the gastro issues much at all which was why he went there in the first place, and some of the Drs were even backpedaling on the pancreatitis diagnosis. He said he's going to take it easy for the next couple of days at home (where he can actually get some rest). Thanks everyone for your positive thoughts and prayers, so far so good.

I said a prayer for Pete.
Thanks for sharing his name. I find it easier to pray when I have a name (I think I'm weird ).

Certainly. My mom had pancritius (however you spell it) and it was painful and stressful. But it was also treatable. May you end the day with that kind of good news.

Thanks everybody. I went to see him this afternoon. He is still in a lot of pain and there are no answers yet. I really hope they can figure out how to help him. When I left, he was finally sleeping so at least he's getting a little bit of rest.

I've never dealt with pancreatitis, but I know someone who has and they were in tremendous pain. Their situation turned out just fine, so I hope Pete's does as well. I said a prayer for him.

I am praying for Pete and you and your family.
I have chronic pancreatitis and just had to be hospitalized a couple of weeks ago for an acute attack.
There are different causes, but pancreatitis can be treated well and the pain controlled. A gallstone can get stuck in the ducts of the biliary tree and cause the pancreatic enzymes to get blocked in the pancreas. My pancreatitis is caused by birth defects--my bile duct tree is too small and the sphincter at the bottom that controls the release of enzymes into the gastro system for digestion is scarred and doesn't open properly.
There are stents and different procedures that are very effective and are done through a scope type device.
I am so sorry your brother is having to go through this. Pancreatitis is very painful. A lot of doctors think that the higher the enzyme count is, the more painful the pancreatitis, but my specialists have said this is false. My level was 38,000, and I was successfully treated in a regular ward with IV fluids and pain medications, but there was someone in ICU with an enzyme level of 3,000 who was much sicker.
I have been told that other health issues like diabetes or auto-immune diseases can make pancreatitis worse.
The doctors will do tests and procedures to help Pete, but the most important action right now is letting the pancreas rest and heal. The procedures have a risk of causing pancreatitis, so the doctors wait until the pancreas heals.
I know how difficult and frustrating it is to be on bowel rest and not be able to eat, but listening to the doctors and following their dietary recommendations makes a huge difference in how quickly you heal and how much better you feel.
I drink a lot of Ensure shakes because I get the nutrients I need even when I can't eat much without painful symptoms. I am tempted to eat my favourite foods, but it's just not worth it.
If I can help you in any way, please don't hesitate to message me. (((Crazy4scraps and Pete)))
