Sorry the entire thread title wouldn't fit.
If I paid $100 delivery charge for one normal sized couch to be delivered, am I supposed to also tip the delivery guys?

The delivery charge does not go to the delivery people, but I don't tip in that scenario unless there is something about the delivery that makes it extra challenging. Like when we got a new, big washer and dryer last month that they had to tote to the 3rd floor.

I'm curious as well.I'm about to order a couch and have it delivered. I was thinking maybe I should tip because my living room is on the 2nd floor of my townhouse.

In all the furniture deliveries we have gotten, I have never tipped. That's their job, and it's not like they have some low wage that makes tipping necessary like waitstaff.

No. I have paid for a service and that is all the money I am spending.
I also don't tip the plumber or the lawn guy or the mulch delivery guy or the tree trimmer or the roofers.
I am tired of the constant hand out for tips these days.

If I'm getting free delivery and it requires some kind of set up or hauling to another level- I tip about $10- $20 apiece, depending on what they did.
My exception was when I paid more than $200 in regular and add on shipping charges for 2 bookcases from Ballard. That total shipping charge was hard to take- but they were exactly what I wanted. The added shipping charges went directly to the delivery service that brought the cabinets. Two guys carried the cabinets 6 feet inside my front door- nothing extreme. I figured I paid a couple of hundred dollars for that and it was enough.

I did with the last delivery. I thought we had clearance to go straight down the hall into the family room, but an antique armoire needed to be moved about 3 inches. The guys carefully moved it out and back into place and I tipped them $20.

Never. The store we purchase from (Nebraska Furniture Mart) farms out their delivery services so the delivery fee does indeed go to the delivery guys. It was explained to us when we had to refuse a couch delivery (couldn't get it in the door). NFM even has a FAQ on their website about not tipping.

I've tipped if there have been several pieces of furniture or if they go above and beyond (like when the delivery person put felt feet on all of the items he delivered), but generally speaking, I hate the whole tip for everything mindset. If you ask me, $100 is a lot for the delivery of one sofa, so I would hope that they are adequately paying their delivery people.
I would offer them a cold bottle of water to go or something like that.

I always tip at least $10 per person so usually $20 total. When I had my bedroom set delivered the 2 guys couldn't get one piece up the stairs and around the corner themselves so they had to wait for the guys from another truck to come help. It was also snowing like crazy that day and they were very careful about covering the pieces from the truck to the house and making sure their feet were clean. I tipped those guys $20 each.

And if I were going to tip, I want a receipt for it. We got burn on that.

My husband always tips.... The amount depends on quality of service, any extras, etc. He at least gives them $5 a piece for a cup of coffee or something...

I always offer something to drink. If they go above and beyond (such as moving the old piece out to the curb for trash pickup) I offer a tip. Sometimes they accept it, sometimes they don't.

Nope, you are paying for the service, and the company is paying wages to the employees. You are done. You could offer a pop or a bottle of water, but you don't need to do more.

I'm a tipper, it isn't that I think it is required or the earth will explode if I don't, but I do it because I want to. In a furniture or appliance delivery scenario, I will generally tip $10 per person.

We never have and I always wonder if we should. I agree that tipping has kind of gotten out of control and since I don't tip for other household services, it seems silly to tip for furniture delivery.

I wouldn't. But the last time I had large furniture delivered it was a stinking hot day, so I offered them a can of soda as they were leaving. They seemed very happy to receive ice-cold beverages after lifting and carrying on such a hot day.

Yes, I do. And, to be honest, what I do is say as soon as they pull in the driveway: "Here let me give this to you now because I may have to do something and get distracted." I figure if you tip up front, they'll be a little more gentle on their end.

I always tip, usually around $20 and sometimes more. That delivery charge is for the company, not for the guys delivering it. Yes they do get paid, but they appreciate the tip and work hard for it.

The delivery charge is what the company uses to pay the driver's wages, so the guys delivering certainly do get a portion of it.

If you have to ask then you should tip. I'm not sure how that's a difficult thing to know.
