Does anybody have the knock off Kallax like shelving unit from Wal-Mart? Do you like it? Have you heard any feedback on it at all? I intended to buy the Kallax but I'm having a hard time finding the time to go to Ikea (2-3 hours away) and I'm on a tear to get my room switched around THIS weekend!!

Yes, I just bought and put together two of the 8 cube knock-offs from Wal-Mart. I didn't need help until I had to lift the finished product up off the floor- they're heavy! I really like them, and for put-it-together-yourself stuff I like the quality. They also hold a LOT. For $68 from Wal-Mart I LOVE these!!

YES!!! I have 2 of the what I call, 1x4 units. I am using them horizontally with one stacked on top of the other. They are our new media center. 5 of the AC d-ring binders fit in one cube perfectly. I am now ready to get some more for my scraproom and the two oldest kiddos want some in their apt this summer. They seem very sturdy.

Well this post WASN'T very timely for me. LOL! I went to IKEA on Monday (55 miles one way) and bought a 1x4 Kallax unit to complete my crafty room re-do. Of course I found a car load of other items and DH had to have the icky meatballs for lunch. I didn't even think to check Walmart.

I just checked them out. They are the same depth as my mikes cubes. Ikea is 2 inches deeper. which I prefer for my albums to not stick out 2 inches like mikes. Ikea 2 x 8 is 64 bucks. Some of my friends have some stuff on their kallax that I want to do too thankfully one is only about 1 hour from me more waiting

The older ones that you are talking about may be their Mainstay brand. I don't know anything about those. Never tried them. This is my set-up. These are 1x4 sets, one stacked on top of the other.
WHOA!!!! That is huge!! I don't know how to make it smaller. Sorry.

She likes to be well-informed!! LOL
Here are the Kallax dimensions - Depth: 15 3/8 ", Height: 57 7/8 ", Width: 16 1/2 "
Here are the Walmart dimensions - 15.63"W x 44.57"D x 17.05"H (from the website) which makes no sense since they appear to be 12x12 sq but I will try to measure mine here shortly. Will report back.
ETA: WM website is full of it. I just measured and it is the same height as Ikea. Well, not the same. 57 3/4" H

I have one right now for a vacation album. It is just.this.too.big! Like a 1/4 inch too big. This bums me out because I picked up 3 or so gold WRMK albums at TM for $8 and planned on using those for this year's LOs. Oh well....those will go in another spot. All of my other 12x12s fit just fine. I would also maybe not trust any dimensions you are getting online. As noted above, I found out the height was wrong on the site.

They go all the way into the shelves. Sorry, I wasn't really clear. The blue album that I have is 1/4 or so too tall to fit in the shelf. I do love them and my 2 oldest kiddos want them in their apt this summer that they will be sharing. Online at WM, I think they even have larger units! I am sure you could do a free ship to store and just pick them up. I haven't looked into it yet but I know on other stuff they do.

I'm thinking of getting something like this (1x4 unit) to use horizontally as a storage bench in my studio. Would any of these work better than the others for that purpose, knowing someone (adults and kids) might occasionally sit on it? We have IKEA local to us so going there is no big deal. My thought is to put bins in the cubbies to corral DD's toys, books and art supplies that she uses in my studio and the bench (I'd make a cushion for the top) would be a nice spot for her to sit and watch videos or read.
ETA: I would put it flat on the floor, if that makes a difference. I don't want to have to constantly be trying to dig stuff out from under it!

I haven't seen the WM version, but I think the Kallax could occasionally hold an adult. Mine seems pretty stable. I have two 2x2's and one 1x4. But my 1x4 is upright.

I'm pretty sure the Expedit would have held up for that use but know the Kallax has thinner sides so I just wasn't too sure if it would fall apart under those circumstances. LOL, I'm sure with enough arm twisting I could get DH to build something with plans from anawhite.com but I don't have enough patience to wait for that!

To muddy the waters further, I have something called the Onin Room Divider that I got at Costco. I randomly saw it one day, rushed home to get a WRMK 12x12 album and took it back to the store to test it out. It looks very similar to this Better Homes and Gardens branded unit at WalMart. Can't weigh in on the Walmart one, but if you live near a Costco, you might look into this: Onin Room Divider I have the WRMK 12x12 and a couple of American Crafts 12x12 albums on it and they fit just fine. I will warn you though that it is extremely heavy. I had to take it out of the box and bring it in piece by piece to get it in the house! Another thought is that depending on where you are going to use it, being slightly too shallow wouldn't really matter. For instance, I have mine along the back of the couch with a lamp on top like a sofa table, so you can't tell if they overhang of the back (they don't, but if they did, you wouldn't see). So if you are going to use it where the overhang was off the back instead of the front, no one would know the difference.

The fact that my birthday isn't until October is not relevant. At all.
