Yesterday morning was the first garage sale of the season, at a local church. It was the only one advertised and there was a line up prior to opening. I tried to practice restraint and didn't buy too much. It was so fun to get out again though and now I have the 'fever'. I picked up four pieces of fabric to use as backdrops for photos, for $1 a piece. I also bought four Vogue sewing patterns for $2. None have been used/cut. I thought that layering them on the floor might make a neat background for photos of clothing finds. I had been looking for some turquoise accent pieces and found a cute candle holder for a quarter. I am always on the look out for photo props, and found a feathered mask for a quarter as well. Some other finds: Two small Pyrex bowls, twenty-five cents each. Orange accents for the spring/summer decor in my living and dining room. I thought they'd be cute to hold mints/candies. This coffee table book was $1. This Nuance Wine Finer aerator retails for around $40 here. I paid $1. This large canvas is perfect for our room, and dh and I both love it. I bought it at our local thrift store last weekend. It was marked $30, but had a couple of small marks on it so I asked if they might discount it, and I ended up getting it for $21. Finally, this vintage Kodak Duaflex lV camera was a find from kijiji. It came with flash, bulb and original box. It is from the mid to late 50s. I paid $20 for it and it sits on our bookcase, a nice addition to my small vintage camera collection. So, did anyone else get out this weekend to any garage sales in your area? Or pick up a find at the thrift store, from an on-line buy and sell site, etc.? If so, please share! Photos optional but always appreciated.

Went to some yard sales yesterday. Got my son a new comforter and sheet set for $8. My best friend had a baby 2 weeks ago and still needed a swing. Found one that's in great shape for $3! Also got a pretty square tray..large...for $2.

this is my best FREE curb find ever:
one of my neighbors put out a huge pile of junk on the curb. every day I would pass it on my way to work and the pile would dwindle as the days went by. almost a week later, DH and I were driving home from dinner and I told him I wanted to look at what was left on the curb. by that time, there was only some small garden pots, a banged up tackle box, and a cardboard box full of dusty little boxes and a tripod or easel. I couldn't open the boxes and DH said that this is what I get for bringing home leftover junk.
I put the cardboard box in my garage and didn't give it another thought until we were sitting around after a family gathering enjoying the afternoon. I told my family about the funny little boxes but that I couldn't open them up. they decided to give it a try and pretty soon, these started popping out of the boxes:
ANTIQUE KODAK FOLDING CAMERAS! all in great condition and in different styles! we couldn't believe that the paper accordion parts were all still intact and not torn like you see in so many cameras. what I thought was an easel was really a Kodak tripod in excellent condition. I don't have room to display all the cameras so I just rotate them ever so often. ETA: one of these recently sold on Ebay for $179! is that nuts or what? and I have a few of them! I can't believe someone would throw these out. that's so crazy.
oh, and the banged up tackle box? I decoupaged it in Tim Holtz tissue paper and use it to hold my rubber stamps:

I've been searching for 2 years for a decent manual typewriter that works. Found this yesterday at a junk show in the country. It was worth the $30 and works perfectly. Attachments:

Great finds. I love the canvas. I love the camera. I would love to find a few old cameras and put them on a shelf. We have some cameras that used to be mom in laws and I would love to display them with a few old ones on a shelf. I have a couple 70 vintage cameras that were my moms that would go with them. I love cameras.

Not exactly thrifted or garage sale, but dh's bother's mother in law died in January. They have started to sell stuff in preparation for selling her home. We got a huge solid wood entertainment center and 50 something inch tv for $500. We also bought a bedroom set that consists of an armoire, 2 bedside stands, dresser with mirror and a four poster bed for $500. Very nice stuff. They also gave us a hall table with matching mirror and a Vera Bradly purse. We offer to pay for the other stuff and they wouldn't let us. I think they wouldn't take money for the other stuff because I was telling what things were worth because they had no clue as to value.
I'll see if i can get pictures of some of it and post later.

I like to shop at shopgoodwill.com and do local pick up since they're no shipping cost, but I don't like to drive over if I just want one little thing so I only bid on local stuff if it's something I really want or if there's a couple things I want. I was high bidder on a train set so I threw in a tonka truck since if have to drive down, except someone sniped my train auction last minute so now I have to drive over to get that truck that I only bid on because I was thinking I'd have to go down there... Lol you'd think I'd learn because this is the second time I've had that happen... Oh well, my son loves his woody doll from that trip and I'm sure he'll enjoy this truck one day too. Plus my favorite donut place is right near by so it gives me an excuse to get a donut

Heartcat, those orange pieces are awesome! Hope you can find some aqua to go with them. That wine aerator looks interesting- does it work? does wine come out all of those holes? We have a camera similar to the one posted somewhere in storage. it doesn't have a big flash attachment though.
just reading with a little bit of envy... no sales of any kind around here. we were thinking about donating stuff at the only Goodwill donation place we've seen, but there are scary (to me) people hanging around the doorway all the time (and no English most likely). I'll just cut the buttons off of everything, cut what can be used into cleaning cloths and toss the rest.

Games for an almost 3 year old! It's hard to find fun ones for this age since they can't read and DS isn't very patient with the counting spaces involved with Candy Land & other board games. I found Puppy Racers, Elafun and a fishing game for .99 each at my favorite Goodwill. Best $3 I spent since he has played them nonstop all weekend!
Oh and I also found a playdoh dentist set for .99 as well. It's missing a few tools, but the most fun parts are intact.

Happened upon a rummage sale that had mega scrapbook supplies. Paper, punches, stamps, xyron/diecuts, ribbons, embellishments & fabric by the bags full! All quality stuff and packaged neatly. So unexpected and so fun to rummage through. I asked for a deal on the paper and ended up with 11 inches of patterned & specialty papers that cost me .02 -.03 per paper. I literally doubled my stash of paper, which I seriously didn't need to do. I plan to sort through and keep what I like, give some away, and sell the rest for what I paid.
Then I got 2 8x8 post-bound albums, huge bag of flowers, 7 sheets of bling, 10 tag sets, huge bag of wooden pendants, 4 pkg glimmer mist, cropper hopper binder filled with folders, punch, big bag of assorted ribbon and cupcake holders of every design. I also got some very cute black with white dotted rosette ribbon(6 yds - original price of $5 per yd). It will be used to decorate dd's graduation table. I paid $50 for everything and got easily over $1000. worth of supplies to play around with. I'm retiring at the end of this year, so I plan to pick up the pace on my scrapping hobby!

I am seriously drooling over the camera finds! So cool. I don't thrift shop. My Goodwill and garage sales all have trash. $3 for a well worn "fun run" t-shirt, that was free to begin with kind of crap. I do enjoy seeing what everyone else is scoring.

Nice finds!
Last week I did great. I found a brand new condition Lands End cardigan for $4, vintage mickey mouse curtains for $2 each, Pokémon curtains (hard to find) $3 each - my boys were SO excited, two Vera Bradley bags one was $13 and the other $5.99 (both in great condition), and a Shafford of Japan planter of the Virgin Mary.

I need to get out and thrift shop for a bunch of vases. I have a feeling that I'll just end up at IKEA unless I find 17 vases that work for what I need in one spot. But fun, different, cheap vases would be a lot of fun.
The camera is very cool.

I went to an estate sale on Saturday (got there 30 minutes before they opened, so I was first- yay!) and picked up a few things-- Saturday is always half-price day at estate sales, so I got some good deals:
-- An interesting-looking dried gourd for $4 (to go on top of our kitchen cabinets, which is a collection of random decorative items) -- A really unique necklace, sort of Native American style, I'd call it, made of brown and cream colored flat round beads-- the pendant has inlaid pieces of turquoise, and is made from an asymmetrical slice of bone. (you wouldn't realize that unless you really looked closely at it, though.) -- A thin silver chain for $5 (to use with some other pendants I have) -- A round pendant made of mother of pearl, inlaid and carved- the design is mountains with a rainbow over them, and a couple of flying birds-- reminds of me of when we were in Hawaii.
and the coolest find, I think anyway, is a really unique vintage (50s-70s era, maybe?) good luck charm bracelet for $5 made with all different sorts of seeds and nuts from Hawaii. It came with the tag still on it that identifies what plant or tree each one of them is from. Comparing the tag to the bracelet (and using Google), it turns out it's missing one of them- a macadamia nut- but when we go back (!! someday!!) I will get one to replace it. I will take some pictures of it, because I think it's really cool, and I can't wait to wear it.

Vintage Remington typewriters like that in my area usually list for $125 and up. They were so well built back then. Congratulations on a great buy.

I have no idea what is considered a good price. also, don't get caught up in the excitement of bidding that you end up paying more than you really want to for something... set a maximum price in your head, and stick to it! (or at least, try to- lol!) I used to go to auctions, and would sometimes get into the 'no, you can't have that-- it's mine, all mine!' thing with someone else, and ended up paying more than I really probably should have for things. If you know how much something is worth, that helps- but you also have to decide how much something is worth to you. (and have fun!! auctions are really fun places to people watch, too!)

All I got was a pair of snow boots. Anyone been to an auction? There's one in my area almost every weekend when the weather warms up. Any tips? I have no idea what is considered a good price. It helps to know typical prices for the items you are bidding on. You can do some research ahead of time online or in local shops. Also attend any previews they offer of the items beforehand and look the item over to avoid any surprises. Then set a firm price you are willing to pay and have the willpower to not go above that. That's key!!! Also, you need to figure in the percentage the auction is going to add to your final bid. Here it is usually about 10%. So if you win an item for $100, then the auction house is going to add $10 to that, for a total of $110 + taxes. So if you absolute top price is $100, then you need to stop you bidding around $90. Thank you! It's in a fairly rural area, so I'm not sure how stringent they are with the pricing. Maybe I'll just check it out the first week and go back the second. My answer is in bold, not sure how it got into the quote.

My youngest is dying for a typewriter. No idea why.
About 6 weeks ago my dh bought a wine fridge at a thrift store. It was brand new. They have a 30 day return. Got back from vacation & only the bottom works. Just our luck. I'm going to google troubleshooting & try to fix it.
