Hi scrappy friends!
So I now have the opportunity to upgrade my expression die cutter. I have a quick question before I proceed.
I see that the cameo designer software allows you to make a negative of the image, great for making stencils and masks. Can the cricut software do that as well? I am leaning towards getting a cameo but would love it if I could keep using my favorite cricut carts instead of purchasing all new images. So if the cricut software does this, it makes more sense for me to get the air...
Hope someone can help me.

I don't have either machine but I'm sure that both can do what you are asking. Fyi the cricut explore can only be used online. If you do not have Internet access it is a brick. I have heard that their system had been going down and people are complaining. Not sure if it was a one time thing or reoccurring. the Cameo must be used with a computer but constant Internet access is not necessary.

I would go with the Cameo as well! I like that I don't have to be online. We had some issues with our ISP recently and I was thankful I was able to finish party favors for my son's birthday without being online. The Cricut is also having some Chrome issues as well.

I went with the Cameo because of the Internet option. I just got back from a four day crop and was really glad I didn't need to be online to use my machine. A couple ladies did have the Air. They had mobile hot spots they were using, but the crop was in a remote location and service was spotty.

Both should be able to make negative cuts, and with the Expression machine as well. I went with a Cameo because of the internet thing. Nothing like a $300 brick to put a damper on crafting.

I love my cameo. Hubby and I were in Joann's yesterday and his mom offered to buy me the explore for my birthday which was on the ninth. Yeah no thank you. I have the cricut imagine and it works just fine but my cameo is my go to for everything. I do not want to be internet dependent on anything to be able to have fun. For instance before we left for the store we were designing the shirts I was making, we had a bit of rain and the power went out. I was able to keep right on going with no issue on my laptop. Couldn't do that with the explore.

I just got a Cricut air and love it so much, but I have never used a Cameo so my opinion is one-sided. I don't have Internet issues, I don't go to crops, and I'm not enough of a hard-core scrapper that if a power/internet outage happened, I couldn't just put my scrapping aside to do later. I'm new to Design Space, but I did read up on the problems after the fact. I haven't experienced any of those problems.
I really enjoy that I can use my Cricut carts. It is soooo much nicer using them in DS rather than using those goofy keyboard mats on my old Cricut. One of my Cricut carts wouldn't work though. I sent an email and they got I all fixed up for me. I also love the cartridges I can buy online and individual images I can buy cheaply. I haven't even used all the free images and fonts yet. I'm so excited about the possibilities!

So if you cut out an apple, you can use the apple you cut out as a die cut, and then the surrounding paper you cut the apple from as your stencil--the negative shape. Now Cameo vs Cricut... I'd pick the Cameo every time. But there is a learning curve to a new machine and I'd stick with what I know!
