I finally had to open this thread, after seeing it for so long... my personal feeling about this is also ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/c2qi57qoGpXKdFvBtXdt.jpg) ... it certainly wasn't part of my upbringing in small town Illinois! My mom made baked beans in the crockpot, but I never liked them, let alone to eat them on toast. I will sometimes eat a small serving of different flavors of Bush's grilling beans when we're having a cookout, but that's rare. I bet my boyfriend would love this, though, especially with the fried egg-- I'll have to suggest it to him! (of course, knowing him he'll add some sort of hot sauce to it, too...) I'm interested how you make baked beans in a crockpot. I just open the tin and heat for a few mins so what else did she do with them that required a crockpot? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ? When I want to serve baked beans as a quick weeknight side with hotdogs or hamburgers, I'll just open a can of Bush's baked beans and heat them up. When I'm having a cookout on a weekend, I might actually bake my own beans, and the crockpot is a good way to do it. For this, I'll use Campbell's pork & beans, which have a more basic and not as tasty sauce as Bush's. I'll doctor it up by stirring in some brown sugar, ketchup, mustard, and onion until I get the flavor combo that I'm looking for. Probably some other seasonings but I'm not remembering at the moment. Then I'll cook for a few hours in the crockpot. When we were kids, my mom would bake up beans with cut-up hotdogs, and we'd call it dinner. It was one of our most favorite things. Unfortunately, my kids aren't big fans of baked beans no matter what the variety. This may be a dumb question, but what's a good side dish for baked beans on toast? Or do you just eat that and call it dinner? LOL.

A question, though: do you eat the beans on toast with a fork? I imagine that the beans, with their sauce, would be too sloppy to pick up in your hand like a grilled cheese sandwich. Yes, they are eaten with a knife and fork.

I like to serve beans on toast with a side of pork sausages, grilled tomatoes, grilled mushrooms, back bacon and scrambled eggs ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg)

If I recall correctly, she would add tons of brown sugar, extra bacon or ham, etc. to them. I'll have to ask her, to tell you the truth- I know she always made/took a huge batch of them to our annual family reunion and they were always a big hit. ETA: I should have just replied: ditto to what Jili said, lol!

I can eat beans on toast as long as the bread is brown and also comes in a can.
Brown bread in a can: it's a classic.

Dh and I saw brown bread in a can at the grocery store around Christmas. We bought a can to try it. Here it is, April, and it's still in the cupboard. We joke about opening it and giving it a go all the time, but we just haven't. Maybe I'll serve it with the Heinz beans that I plan to buy this weekend.

Doesn't sound remotely good. But I'm not a fan of beans in a can anyway. Always interesting to hear what people eat in other countries. I grew up in Germany and ate a lot of meat/brotchen and nutella/brotchen for breakfast which a lot of people think is strange. I tried to add a "Yeah that" sign but it went to the wrong place. So "yeah that" to what 4 Yoohoot said above. Beans in a can for breakfast do sound vile, I'm sorry. I guess it's whatever you grew up with that you remember with fond memories. I'll take the brotchen with butter or cheese in the mornings any day over beans on toast. Debbie in MD.
