Which do you prefer:
a) hard flooring such as tile, hardwood, etc.
b) soft flooring such as carpet.
I like hard flooring mainly because I am lazy. I can dust hard flooring in a fraction of the time it takes me to vacuum. And I can clean it in no time at all compared to cleaning carpet and I can clean it often whereas I would probably only clean carpet a couple of times a year at most.

Hard with rugs. Carpet is nasty... No matter how much you vacuum, you can't get it all. I can toss a rug if I need to.
Admittedly, I have 4 kids. If it was just my husband and I, the likelihood of gross things getting in the carpet would be decidedly lower.

I like carpet in bedrooms and living room. I live in North Dakota and like it for the warmth. Hard flooring in kitchen, dining room, hallways and bathrooms.

I've always had a house with the main level hardwood and then another level carpeted. In my old house it was the daylight basement carpeted and my current house the upstairs bedrooms and hall are carpeted. While I prefer hardwood/hard flooring for looks, cleanliness, etc, I just wouldn't want my whole house that way. I like some carpet. That said, if I *had* to chose one or the other is chose all hard.

I got rid of all the carpet a few years ago and went with laminate, tile, and linoleum.

I've always had carpet until a few months ago. Now my entire apartment is tiled. At first the plan was tile for practical reasons then just get a large rug...that way every few years I can just replace the rug instead of having the hassle of replacing wall to wall carpet. However I've found that I love the tiles so much I'm no longer thinking about getting a rug at all.
I think it's definitely easier to keep clean. I am still a bit shocked as to how much dust accumulates and how quickly. I sweep everyday, but I didn't vacuum everyday...now I realise how much dust was probably in that carpet the whole time, even with once a week vacuuming. I won't ever go back to wall to wall carpet again.

Hard flooring, although I really dislike tile. I like hard wood floors, and laminate, if necessary.
I will never, ever have carpeting in my house. Anywhere. Ever.

I hate carpet with a passion. Our old house had nasty brown shag carpeting in every room except the kitchen and bathroom. Gross, gross, gross! Gradually over the years we ripped it out room by room leaving the existing hardwood floors exposed. We had to patch in a few spots in the livingroom, but hey, the house was over a hundred years old so we expected that. I liked it so much better.
Our house now is about 30 years old, the carpets in the livingroom and family room were replaced around 2010 when the kitchen was upgraded and the addition put on. They looked okay when we moved in about three years ago, but we have dogs and a kid so now? Not so much. Hate it! I'm tempted to think about the wood look tile mentioned in the other thread for the family room where we spend a lot of our time since the rest of the main floor is tile (kitchen/dining area, hallways, mud room closet, bath, and laundry are all tiled). That room has radiant heat and is cold at times anyway, so if we did do tile I would look into heated floors like we have on the newer kitchen side of the house. I don't know if I could get DH to agree to getting rid of the carpet on the second floor (bedrooms, stairs, etc.), but it would be nice if the whole main floor of the house had hard surfaced flooring.

Hard wood, no question. It's easier to take care of, especially when the cat upchucks on it.

We tiled the entire main floor of the house for practical reasons with kids coming in from the beach and a backyard pool I don't stress over sand and water. The tile also helps us keep the house cool in the summer. I do have rugs in the family room and living room but they are inexpensive and easy to replace. Upstairs is a mix of tile (bathrooms) and engineered hardwood.

Tile in wet areas and wood everywhere else. I HATE carpet and all of the nasty stuff it harbors. Yuck!

Carpeting is to me the nastiest thing going.
I prefer hardwood, tile, bamboo, cork, stained cement just about anything that is not carpet. Area rugs that can be cleaned or tossed and replaced would be ok.

Hard flooring in all rooms, for the same reasons as OP, and also because I have terrible allergies and the carpet makes me feel like crap.

I don't have a strong preference either way. I don't plan on living in this house forever so replacing it with expensive hardwood would not give us a return on our home (starter home neighborhood).
My son can be very destructive, so I'd probably pick hardwood but I'm not disgusted by carpet.

I prefer hard surface floors. My current savings goal is to replace the carpet in my house with something else next year. My kitchen, bath and laundry space all have tile. My craft/office room has a modern vinyl flooring that I really do like. Probably will go with an engineered wood in the living room and master bedroom.
I'm sure I'll end up with some large area rugs to warm the rooms up and dampen sound.. or maybe not.

After years of dog ownership, I am working toward having a carpet free home. While they look nice and feel good under the feet, the trap so much dirt that no vacuum can get all of it. It's just gross.

The house we moved into last year has only tile. Everywhere. I love it. Super easy to clean (our steam mop is now one of my best friends), the color that we have doesn't really show dirt or even dog hair, and we've used area rugs to break it up a little. The only thing I didn't like was the stairs. We worried that they'd be really slippery, so we put down adhesive stair runners on them. Brilliant solution.
DH has said a few times since living here that he'd like to never live in a house with carpeting again. I agree.

I hate carpet. It's impossible to truly clean and once it stains it makes the entire room look terrible. If there are pets and kids in the house, I especially don't want my bare feet to touch the carpet. I prefer laminate, hard wood and tile flooring.

Hard flooring. Once we realized how much gunk and grossness is in the carpet we never want to go back.

We have hardwood through the entire house except for the kitchen and a small hallway which has tile. I like the hardwood. I have area rugs in my younger DD's room and in the living room to help with some of the wear and tear. I hate the tile floor. It was here when we moved in and I keep trying to get DH to agree that we need to rip it up and put wood in there too. The tile is cold and slippery. We have a pool and I have throw down towels on the floor if the kids have to come in to use the bathroom and they are drippy.

We have carpet in our master bedroom - our next project will be to replace it with a hard surface. I'm very interested in wood-look tile, so we could do that in the master bath and bedroom.

I like carpet in bedrooms and living room. I live in North Dakota and like it for the warmth. Hard flooring in kitchen, dining room, hallways and bathrooms. All of the tiled rooms on our first floor have in floor heat and it's SO nice in the wintertime. They're never cold at all. Once those tiles warm up they stay warm for a long time.

No to carpeting. My husband would get so sick when the carpeting would get cleaned. Or even if I spot cleaned. I grew up with shag carpet, a dog and fleas. Never ever again. Carpet is a breeding ground for bugs.
