I have accepted a long term sub assignment at the school where I have been subbing for 2 years and where my kids have gone for 7. It is a first grade position and my DD just finished 1st grade and the teacher is the same one my son had for 1st grade. I like the team quite a bit and feel I can do a good job for the 3 or 4 months I am there. I am excited to have a classroom again and teach the kids rather than just pop in and out here and there, but I know the workload will be huge as it was when I was teaching full time. I am hoping to take my classes for recertification in the spring and go back full time next year so I want to do a great job!
i have to start the classroom since she is due in August. My concern know is how much I should invest in there knowing I am leaving. I have fish themed die-cuts and name plates in my Amazon cart and am planning on doing a "Dive in to 1st grade" theme. I see so much cute stuff on Pinterest but don't want to step on her toes or set things up and then take them when I go or leave them for her.
if you have had a long term sub or been one please let me know any hints or tips you have. I had one when I went on maternity leave but that was 12 years ago and she ended the school year for me so I can't remember too much of what we did.

I have long termed subbed in several position... All in the beginning of my career. When I started in Sept, the teacher did everything for me (organization, labeling, all that) because she wanted it to make sense when she came back in Jan.
The second long term sub in Sept, the teacher had a brain tumor she had just found out about. She had surgery in August and I opened the classroom on my own. She came back in Jan and just took over what I had been doing.
Both were very different and worked out fine. My advice would be to talk to the teacher. If she's due soon, chances are she's going to leave it all up to you.

Talk to your pregnant teacher. She what she has in mind. She may already have bb stuff. She may also have certain things specific to certain boards in her room. Remember you don't want to cause her more work now or when she returns.
Have fun.....maybe go to lunch with her! If you do, take a notebook to jot things down and jot down what you are thinking.

I was out at the beginning of the year because my daughter was born Aug 2. The biggest advice I can give is to talk to the teacher. Ask her the rules she has for the class and the procedures she wants the kids to know. Ask her about homework and the procedure for handing out and collecting. What kinda of things are done on a team basis so it's consistent? Things like that. I had my classroom set up for my sub. I ended up nesting in my classroom. I had to get everything set up! A few days later, I was a mom. Lol

I sent an email to the principal and the teacher today asking about when we can get into her room. I will definitely ask her what she wants to stay the same (she has a great morning smartboard that she updates with spelling , number of the day, 100 chart activities, etc. that I know I want to use). I go away the 1st week of August and then have a week off and then start back in the 18th of August.
I did make some brag bracelets to give as a behavior reward, and a little treat to give the kids on our sneak a peek day because I know those are easy things that just take some time. She just emailed me and said she is due the 8th but she is having Braxton Hicks contractions so she may go early. If that happens I doubt she will really care as along as her class is taken care of! LOL

In that case I would email her back and ask her some questions to get you rolling just in case...
1. Do you have specific bulletin boards you would like me to prepare? 2. How would you like me to label the desks? 3. Is there anything specific you know I will need to purchase to start the year?
