This does not make me in any way happy. However, my oldest DD is heading off to college this fall and getting a phone will be the easiest way to keep in contact with her. So, I am facing having to get a phone. Yuck. On the upside, though, I can reactivate my Instagram account and post photos of everything I eat again. Okay, so...looking for some suggestions. I've decided to go with Android (because I detest iAnything tech...seriously, I don't want anything to do with it) and am looking at the Samsung Galaxy S III 4G LTE. Virgin Mobile has a great plan and what I'm really wondering, for anyone who might have this phone, is how good is the camera really, and what kind of battery life does it have? kthnxbie!

I can relate. Didn't want a cell phone.......and still use mine less than others.... A year ago I upgraded to a Galaxy 4 and LOVE IT. I do enjoy being able to look up something when I am away from home.
If you want to go as cheaply as possible, get a disposable phone that allows you to purchase minutes when you use them up. (just an idea)

I have the galaxy 4 SO has the Galaxy 3 we both love them. Battery life is ok if you don't use it constantly. I recharge mine every evening.

I have the S3 for work (have an HTC One M7 as my personal phone). I don't take a lot of pictures with it, but the ones I have taken are ok. The battery usually lasts me at least a couple of days - but I am not a heavy user of this phone because I typically only use it for work purposes, which would be the occasional phone call, checking things on Dropbox, and texting with my boss.

Does it do a real full charge every time? Or if I charge it when it's half way down, does it cut the actual battery life in half?
Oh, here's one more question: is the battery replaceable? Thanks!

For years I had a pay by the minute phone. I didn't want to pay for a plan and I didn't want to be tied to my phone. When my son entered middle school I wanted him to have a phone because he's involved in so many after school activities. I upgraded my phone to a plan with talk & text. That was 2 years ago. I still have the talk & text and find it fine (I have a 4G Kindle) and both my kids (and my husband) have smart phones. I understand the reluctance to immerse yourself in that world Sometimes when we are out to dinner, they'll have their noses buried in their phones and I'll have to remind them that it's rude to not talk to your dinner companions. Sigh. Just another reason I don't want a smart phone. My daughter has the phone you linked and loves it.

Sigh. Just another reason I don't want a smart phone. That's really it. I've been free from this since about 2006 and really, I've loved being without it. Guess I'll just have to lay down my personal boundaries for my family...if I don't answer, I don't answer and I won't answer while I'm at the store...unless it's a life & death emergency, and if the emergency is that you're out of <insert grocery item here> I'm probably gonna come home and pummel you 'cause I will not be at anyone's beck and call! And I probably won't even tell my mother...geez. She would call at home to leave a message to let me know she'd left a message on my cell phone wondering if I'd answered her email yet.

I understand! I don't love my cell phone either. Is the main reason you want the cell phone is so you can text your college student, and share pictures? When we got our phones, the salesperson asked us what our main "goal" was with our phone. That helped him pick the right phone for us. I am all thumbs, so I needed a phone with a keyboard. I can't do the touch screen at all.

Yep, maryland...that's exactly the reason. She thinks she's gonna be just fine by herself up there at that big'ol college (and she probably will), but she's also never lived away from home and there's a pretty high likelihood of homesickness coming her way. Just want to be on hand when those moments hit. Also, I'm a hobby photographer and one thing I've noticed about these kinds of phones is the amazing wide angle lens they all seem to have!

I can't comment on the Galaxy because I'm an iPhone gal. However, you mentioned Virgin Mobile's good plan, so I will just caution you to be sure that it works in your area, and in your dd's college area if you plan to travel there. We used to have Virgin Mobile and I had no complaints about it. But then dd went to college in a small town in southern Virginia where there was NO Virgin Mobile service. None. The school recommended Verizon so we got dd an iPhone with Verizon and I kept my old whatever-it-was with Virgin Mobile. However -- dd had to come home once a month for a doctor's appointment during her first semester and the week that I was planning to go get her for the first time I suddenly realized I had no way of getting in touch with her once I got there. Her Verizon phone worked great there, and my Virgin Mobile phone worked great here, and we texted each other all the time. But...my phone wasn't going to work down there. I went to the Apple store and haven't looked back since. lol So just check the area coverage before you commit to something.

Haha -- I was going to say the exact same thing. You beat me to it!
I have the Galaxy S4 and am very happy with it. I have an Otterbox Defender case on it which makes it a little too big but the phone itself is a nice size and I'm very happy with it. Had a Tracfone for years and I resisted upgrading for so long but once I did, I couldn't believe I waited so long.
