My aunt has a delicious one with cream cheese and I think sour cream, too. Not too sweet.
Several of the recipes I'm finding online say, "Don't use banana pudding-- use vanilla."

I make mine the old fashioned way. It has fat-free sweetened condensed milk, vanilla extract, eggs and 3 cups of bananas in the recipe. Meringue is on the top. I love it warm, right from the oven, but it's good cold too.
My recipe does not have banana pudding.

I use this version from Cooking Light and even my DH and FIL who do not like dessert always eats a couple of servings. www.myrecipes.com/recipe/banana-pudding

Mine is 5 bananas and a box of Nilla wafers. Peel and slice up bananas. Mix them and the wafers up in a large bowl. Mix 3 eggs, 2/3 cup of milk and a cup of sugar together. Heat on a med low and stir CONSTANTLY. Otherwise you end up with curdled eggs. Once you start to get large bubbles on pudding, take off the stove. Add 1 stick of butter and a tsp of vanilla. Mix and pour over wafers and bananas. Stir. You will have liquid on the bottom. Give it a few minutes to soak in and serve warm. This is my mom's recipe and the recipe my kiddos want from me. We don't do cold pudding.

I make Paula Deen's version with Chessmen instead of the wafers. So good.

My Grandmothers Banana Pudding recipe is Texas style.
2 cups Milk Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk Small carton Cool Whip 1 Box Vanilla Wafers 5 Bananas, sliced
Mix boxed Vanilla Pudding, 2 cups of milk and sweetened condensed milk with a blender. Fold in cool whip. Take a large bowl and start layering vanilla wafers and sliced bananas. Top off with 1/3 of the pudding mixture. Continue until you have made 3 layers, ending with pudding. Break some wafers up on the top - crumbs for decoration. Cover and refrigerate (I prefer over night).

I love banana pudding. But I don't like bananas, so what I end up with is essentially vanilla custard with vanilla wafers. My kids are the same way. We all kind of pick around the bananas. So when I make it, I just skip that step.

Instructions Whisk sweetened condensed milk and water in large bowl. Add pudding mix. Whisk 2 minutes or until well blended. Chill 5 minutes. Fold in whipped cream. SPOON 1 cup pudding mixture into 2 1/2-quart glass serving bowl. Top with one-third each of the vanilla wafers, bananas and remaining pudding. Repeat layering twice, ending with pudding mixture. CHILL thoroughly.

My mom makes it from scratch - it is pretty easy and everyone loves it (except me because I can't stand bananas - haha) When she makes it, she sets a small amount aside for me that doesn't have the bananas in it but everything else is there.
Mom's Homemade Banana Pudding
1/2 cup sugar 2 tablespoons cornstarch 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 1/4 cups milk 4 large eggs, separated 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 3 1/3 cups vanilla wafers 4 ripe bananas 3 tablespoons sugar
1. Preheat oven to 375°. Whisk together first 3 ingredients in a small bowl. Whisk together sugar mixture, milk, and 4 egg yolks in a medium-size heavy saucepan until well blended. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, 6 to 8 minutes or until thickened. Remove from heat; stir in butter and vanilla.
2. Layer half of vanilla wafers in an 8-inch square baking dish. Top with half of banana slices and half of pudding. Repeat procedure with remaining wafers, banana slices, and pudding.
3. Beat egg whites at high speed with an electric mixer until foamy. Gradually add 3 Tbsp. sugar, beating until sugar dissolves and stiff peaks form. Spread meringue over pudding, sealing to edge of dish.
4. Bake at 375° for 7 to 10 minutes or until golden. Let cool 30 minutes, and serve warm; or chill an additional hour, and serve cold.

Mine is very similar to disneypal's. Pudding is vanilla from scratch. Yum!

Another vote for Paula Deen's version. It is the first thing to go at a potluck. Really rich.

I don't have a recipie, but we recently attended a barbecue and they served banana pudding in plastic cups using the miniature nilla wafers. Everyone got a cute individual serving. I thought it was a neat idea.

I think something this indulgent deserves a 100% homemade recipe. I make the custard with fresh eggs and cream on the stovetop. Vanilla custard, nicely ripened bananas, and real Nilla wafers. Totally worth it.

I'm gonna be an outcast - I only like to layer the banana pudding and the nilla wafers. I don't like using real bananas. They feel slimy to my mouth. I top with whipped cream.

We can be non-banana pudding soul sisters.

Oh my gosh, I forgot this even existed. My mother used to make it and I loved it as a kid. Now I'm pretty fussy about banana anything, so I don't think I would look to make it. But it's very nostalgic for me.

Totally worth it. Mine is very similar. A cooked homemade vanilla pudding, real Nilla wafers, but we use barely ripe bananas. We don't like mushy bananas. We also eat it warm. Once it cools, blech!

I make my pudding from scratch over a double boiler. Egg yolks, sugar, flour and milk. Then I add vanilla. Layer pudding, wafers and sliced bananas. No meringue.

Me too! Are you Canadian? I am Canadian. So you think maybe this is not a Canadian thing? I always thought it was another one of those southern things that people shake their head at until they try it. But I could be wrong, a lot of foods have started in one area of the country and gravitated elsewhere. (and y'all should try it. Very tasty stuff. Even if I leave the bananas out of it. )

I haven't had this or seen it anywhere. Honestly, it sounds pretty revolting but pudding isn't really my thing.

I loved this when a friend's mum in Ohio made it for me. She is originally from KY. My version is:
Nilla Wafers (homemade as we can't buy them here) 4+ Bananas Vanilla Instant Pudding Fresh Cream (whipped)
Layer, layer, layer and top with the fresh cream.
My coworkers all love it, my family loves it..I'm forced to make it for each event at home and work. My coworker even makes it herself now. I can't be bothered making custard from scratch after I make the biscuits but I think I'll do a chocolate custard next time for something slightly different.
Gilly.
