My dd is in 7th grade and the principal of her school just outlawed purses. He did it because some of the girls were going to the restroom and using their phones. There is a no-phone usage policy during school hours.
I’m curious if other schools have put a ban on purses.

Not that I know of but I can't say I blame your principal. If some of the girls are abusing the privilege of carrying a purse, unfortunately, they all have to pay the price.

What?! So what if a girl needs to carry around a tampon or pad? How will they discreetly do that??

No our school doesn't ban purses or backpacks from being carried. Our school also allows kids to use their phones between classes and during lunch.

No, thank goodness. I hate group punishments anyway. And I can't imagine having to go without a purse, even if they are allowed to carry backpacks. My dd went to lunch without her backpack and of course her clothes often didn't have pockets, as so many women's clothes do not.

Purses are still allowed at my daughter's middle school. The kids aren't supposed to have their cell phones in sight during the school day. I get the impression the faculty tends to look the other way a lot of the time on that, though, judging by the amount of Instagram photos I know are being taken during the school day.

(Bring Your Own Device). That way, the kids can use the Internet without the school's providing a device. The school has wifi throughout the building for this purpose. I think they went with the "if you can't beat them, join them" philosophy. It certainly seems to cause less stress and teachers aren't expected to confiscate expensive phones with no where to store them securely.

Gosh, that makes me wonder what I did in grade school (up through 8th)! We weren't allowed purses, but we also only switched between rooms once per day (the only specials we had were music and art one day a week each). We didn't have lockers, just an open closet all along the back of the room. I know I had a bag in my desk that had pads in it, but I have no idea how I transferred that to my pocket discreetly! Funny the things we don't remember.

At our middle school, girls can carry a purse but it can't be bigger than a 1/2 sheet of paper. And they have adopted the "can't beat them, join them" philosophy on technology as well but they aren't allow water bottles.

She has $6,000.00 worth of braces right now and she is fanatical about brushing them after lunch. They are not allowed to take their backpacks to lunch. How do boys handle this (minus the period stuff)?

But none of the girls carry purses anyway. If they are not taking their backpack to the restroom with them (between classes/lunch), then they tuck something in their pocket. Middle school is different. I know there is a no-phone policy, but not sure about purses (my DD does not carry one). I know DD has pads in her backpack, but not sure what she does when she needs one. I have no idea what the rules are at my son's middle school, but I have to ask. Why wouldn't you be allowed to have a bottled water? I do remember lots of girls smoking in the A wing bathroom at my high school. Maybe they should have banned purses back then

Maybe they should have banned purses back then Because bottled vodka looks a lot like bottled water (at least that's my assumption) - our school doesn't have that policy, but on my field trips the students either have to bring a sealed bottle of water or an empty bottle and they fill it at school prior to leaving. They cannot bring anything that could possibly be something other than water.

They tried that at my daughter's school, but, after kids were breaking into lockers and stealing things day in and day out, they gave up.

I have three kids in two different districts and three different schools. Purses are not banned in any of them. Neither are cell phones. The kids are allowed to use them both for school work and to amuse themselves when they are finished with their work. My son even has teachers that have "charging stations". I am really surprised at how laid back the cell phone policy has become, actually.
The other day I noticed on my Netflix account that someone was netflixing during the school day. Turns out it was my son, who was bored/ done with work during the mandatory study hall. (Everyone in the high school has a 1/2 hour study hall, during the time of the day, that way if kids need help with a class they are able to access the teacher without having to stay after school and they won't be interrupting a class in session).

Purses and cell phones are allowed at my kids school. Most kids carry their backpacks everywhere so it wouldn't be a big deal if purses were banned.

I would have to push back on that one or insist on feminine supplies in the bathrooms. DD is so sensitive about that time of month that she would be very uncomfortable going to school without a purse. It is bad enough that they took out the lockers - she carries a huge backpack and a trombone around all day long. No place to discretely keep feminine supplies would be a travesty to her (I already get a monthly lecture on how unfair the lack of lockers is).

Wow I had never heard of the water bottle thing! At my dd's high school they are encouraged to bring a water bottle and are allowed it on their desk in class.

Mine is in private high school so they have rules for everything (as claimed by dd!) There is a size restriction on purses, something like 4"x6"ish, the girls generally carry those little wristlet type things from Vera Bradley. No backpacks allowed in classrooms either. Oddly enough they don't seem to have big restrictions on phones. I do think they expect them to be put away, but can use them at lunch and in study. They work on ipads though so they can message right off them - as evidenced some days by the texts I get when I know they are in class

They are allowed to have backpacks and purses at my kids school. But my girls never carry purses, and their friends don't either. They just stick their phones in their pockets like the boys do. They do wear leggings a lot, not sure what they do with their phones then. I guess put them in their backpack. I would think that even if they banned purses, the kids could still take the phones in their pocket.

They can carry purses at both my kids' schools (junior high and high school). They are not supposed to have their cell phones out in class, but I think teachers look the other way a lot of the time.

Neither kid had/has a restriction on purses or cell phone in middle school in Los Angeles or Canada. Of course, they can't use the phone in class and it has to be on silent or it will be confiscated for a period of time depending on how egregious the violation.

How do boys handle this (minus the period stuff)? Could she use a small make-up bag (the kind that are like a flat pencil case, sort of) and stock it at home, so she could just grab it from her desk when she needs it? If she uses it every day for dental care, it won't be obvious when she needs it for other purposes, too.

My plan for my daughter is a small pencil case with a tampon/pad in it. I wish periods weren't so shameful and embarrassing in the first place that it wouldn't be an issue. Our school allows purses.

No ban on purses at either schools my kids go to, but there are also no lockers so most girls do not carry purses (just backpacks). There are general restrictions on cell phone use, but they are also by some teachers in class and students are free to use them as they want to before school and at lunch.
DD would not be impacted by a no purse restriction as her phone lives in her back pocket.

Purses and backpacks must be left in lockers at my dd's school. They are a BYOD school, so she does carry either her phone or tablet to class. She uses a small wristlet to carry pads in, it tucks nicely into a front pocket of her lunch bag, which she is permitted to carry.

I did occasionally allow kids to take photos in class if we were doing something cool and I often had them look up Information , but generally, they were only allowed to use them at lunch

They're not shameful or embarrassing. It's just that teenage boys are stupid. I went to a Christian school. The teachers would give you crap about going to the bathroom during class. All us girls developed the LOOK, but even most of the guy teachers would get so weird and uncomfortable that you might as well just announce you're on the rag. At least they didn't let the guys say stuff out loud. Only a few of us girls would slap a guy who pointed out that we might be "emotional" on our periods. You want emotion? How about anger?

The JrH/HS here has that rule. All back pack, totes, and purses must be left in your locker at all times. You have to have a doctor's excuse to carry water. My daughter was on chemo and recovering from several surgeries her senior year that messed up her balance and vision (no way could she walk and carry a stack of books) and was given special permission to have a tote bag all day with her books, water (ordered by her oncologist),a bag if she got sick (thankfully always made it to the bathroom) and other necessities if she threw up etc.... I do not know why the school had this rule because there was no rule on cell phones at all. It is probably related to weapons.
