I keep reading a million articles about which side of the boat is best for your balcony on an alaskan cruise. Any tips on cabin selection or anything else? We're starting from ignorant

The very best cabin for Alaska is an aft cabin, facing the back. Views are fantastic and you're protects from the wind so you can really enjoy the balcony..
It's what we did a few years ago on Royal Caribbean and were so glad we did.
Lacking that the right side (I forget what it's called) so you can see the land views on the way up. Enjoy - we had such a wonderful time on that cruise.

The problem -- sometimes Alaska is very wet, misty, rainy and views of the land are obscured. The last Alaskan cruise we took, we had a great balcony, facing land, but everyday was obscured in some way. But -- think about it -- in your mind, or on a map, point the ship in the direction it is going, figure out where the land is, then determine which side of the ship is on the land side. Then hope for sunny clear days!

We got a corner suite in the starboard back of the ship. The ship "parked" at Glacier Bay for a while and we had a panoramic view from our balcony. It was amazing! Enjoy your trip!

You can't figure that out? It should be obvious which side of the ship land will be on.

Actually if you are going through the inner passage, it is possible that you will see land on both sides at least part of the trip. And while we were at Glacier Bay the Glacier was on the opposite side of most of the land the rest of the trip. We didn't have a balcony so we ended up on one of the decks in deck chairs, but with a blanket and jacket in June, it wasn't too terribly bad.
We absolutely loved that cruise! And if you have time in Vancouver, check out Granville Island. It is not too far from the cruise dock. There are also some great restaurants right near the docks.

You'll have land on Starboard side going up and Port side coming back. Unless it's one way, then Starboard for sure.

We had the aft cabin on my trip where the balcony wrapped around to the back of the ship and that was awesome. But honestly, the ship we were one would often stop and do a 360 in the bays, etc so both sides got a great view.

IDK, but will it matter? It seems to me that whatever side you are on, you will see the opposite on the return journey.

Enjoy - we had such a wonderful time on that cruise. I have an aft balcony for next July in Alaska. Many cruise reviews say it really doesn't matter which side you're on. The best view is going to be up on the upper deck where you can move to which ever side you need.
