We received an order form today from the college ds will be attending this fall. It's very urgent; "Hurry! Order now! Don't wait or your student will be left out!" They're claiming that only their sheets/linens will fit. I know I've seen XL sheets in stores. Is this valid or something only first time college parents do? LOL

I think that's a bunch of bs to get you to pay more for things and to get you to buy more than you really need to. Bed bath and beyond will for sure have tons of extra long sheets to choose from at back to school time in August. I'd throw that thin in the trash and not give it another thought!

We found the XL sheets at Target, Bed Bath & Beyond and on Amazon. I would buy them soon though because as it got closer to the time for them to move into the dorms, the harder they were to find.

Scam and likely not really from his college but someone who bought a list from them and is making their mailers look like they come from the college. He won't be missing out but do find out if his bed is an XL twin or not.

We got those same packets. Since XL twin sheets are now so easy to find, I'd recommend a pass unless the price is just unbelievably good. I saw some of that stuff that the kids' friends had ordered. It wasn't crap, but it wasn't stellar quality either. Just very middle of the road.
Places like Target, BBB, etc. will be full of XL twin and other dorm stuff soon if they're not already out.

Oh, and yes to what Volt said about it not really being from his university. The ones we got looked like they were, but they really weren't. Many colleges and universities sell their mailings lists to all kinds of companies like these. Soon after school starts you'll be getting crap for "official" care packages (full of "delicious," extremely over-priced cheese nips and such). Then around midterms and finals, it's the "official" studying care packages, etc. Amazon Prime was great for sending the kids what they needed while in the dorms.

If your ds' dorm bed requires extra-long sheets you'll be able to buy them many places in the next few months.
If you want convenience, order the bedding and cross it off the list, but it certainly isn't urgent in April.
E.T.A. -- it may or may not be from the school. My ds' university had these sets, which also were available through mail order, in the bookstore when we went for orientation. Being the mom of an extremely reluctant shopper, I did check out the quality which was, as a previous poster noted, neither great nor horrible. But it was only 3 days after h.s. graduation and ds was in no frame of mind to consider dorm room necessities, so we passed.
As for the "welcome" and "finals week" care packages, some are fund raisers for campus groups. A friend is the Habit advisor at a Big Ten school and they raise money with these. Again, you pay for convenience. I haven't used them. My mom and sil keep ds' snack drawer more than full.

We skipped the flyers and bought at Target. I have a boy who doesn't really care a whole lot about matchey foo-foo but we were able to get something that didn't make him cringe and fit the dorm beds. I had a momentary thought about buying one of the deals the flyers advertise-the ones where you get all the bedding, towels, etc. just so I wouldn't have to shop with the boy.

Thanks for the reminder... my daughter is going to camp on a college campus this summer and needs x long sheets. I assume a normal size comforter will be fine?

We are still waiting for her to pick a college! She has one more day to decide. So you are way ahead of where we are! I will just buy my daughter sheets. I am clueless!

I wondered about that, too, when we received that mailing last year. A lot of parents asked about it during orientation. I didn't find it difficult to find the right things. My dd actually has a regular twin sized comforter on her dorm bed and it works just fine. She does have the twin extra-long sheets, though. I also got her one of those egg-crate pads.
We shopped at JCPenney, Bed Bath & Beyond, Kohl's, and Target.

Just wanted to echo what everyone is saying. Our son's college participates in the linens/care package program, but we did everything piecemeal. Also, as a helpful hint, if your son or daughter does not have a car or a grocery store nearby, utilize Amazon Pantry. We found it helpful and could send him snacks, drinks, toiletries, etc. We'll utilize it more next year, as our son will be in a apartment-style dorm and will need to supply his own toilet paper, clean his own bathroom, etc.

We did Target also, but splurged on a Pottery Barn quilt to match. Not that my son cared. Now DD will be a different story.

We found that they included things my DS didnt want/need and I was worried about the quality. I think you can get better deals buying exactly what you want on your own.

Scam and likely not really from his college but someone who bought a list from them and is making their mailers look like they come from the college. He won't be missing out but do find out if his bed is an XL twin or not. This. It happens to our students sometimes, too. There are reputable companies that will put together a "custom" dorm package for you--everything from sheets, pillows, comforters, towels, desk accessories, etc--that is color/pattern coordinated. The box is delivered to the dorm room so if you are traveling far, you don't have to deal with getting those items to campus. You and your roommate can select complimentary colors or be matchy-matchy if you want, or just one person in the room can order. We did that with our daughter, even though we lived in the same town where she was going to college, because honestly, the prices were pretty good and the items were cute. It saved us all the running around looking for the best price madness LOL. We received a link to their website through the University's parents club, so it was not a scam. If you are interested in something like this, check with the school directly and don't rely on this unsolicited email. And yes, a lot of schools do have beds that take the XL sheets, but they really aren't that hard to find.

We always throw those things in the trash. We purchased what our girls needed separately from several stores. Two of them will be juniors in the Fall, and everything we purchased has held up great, and they will use again. I am not sure if we had purchased from one of those flyers if things would have held up so long.

Total rip off. Toss it. You can actually google and find similar packages online for half the price, if you want to go the package route.

The stores are full of XL sheets starting with the fourth of July. You'll be able to find them before that, but the college dorm marketing starts around then.
Bed, Bath, and Beyond has a great shopping service (and maybe other stores) where we went through the store nearest us, marking off the things we wanted. They had it boxed and ready at the store nearest DD's college when we got there. You could pick and choose which of those things you wanted to buy, then leave the rest. It made things very easy -- we didn't have to store or ship anything.

DS's freshman roommate ordered those.. The quality looked really bad. No idea how they've held up. We found everything DS needed at Target. He's finishing up his sophomore year and they're still in great shape.

If you have a Tuesday Morning, check there occasionally. I got a really nice set for DD last summer. Not much of a color selection, but the price was right.
