My Aunt just posted this article on Facebook: Seduced by the Serpent: Yoga and the Devil's DoorI'm without words. Really? I understand what the article is saying about the origins of Yoga, the meaning behind it. But I also think somebody so strong in their faith is not going to worship the Devil or any other deity just by doing yoga. Really?

Yes, apparently it's yet another thing from the devil. Stupidity is what it really is. Yoga is good for the body which in turn is good for the soul, but some people are so damn insecure in their own faith that they can't bear to be a part of anything that's outside their faith. It's stupid and it makes me mad that people can be so bloody narrowminded. I came across it when I was into yoga. I left for other reasons like yogis are fake mean girls who say they are so enlightened when they are not but there are people out there who think that yoga is bad for you because it's not Christian.

I have a niece who is a yoga instructor and she hears it all the time. In fact, she was asked by a friend to lead morning yoga at a local Methodist event (as a donation) and she was cancelled because so many people complained that she would be teaching them to worship a non-Christian god. My niece is, ironically, an atheist, so she doesn't worship anyone or anything, as it happens. Except, maybe, good health.

I have a good friend who loves the Lord and does (or did) yoga exercises. The exercise techniques are good for the body; the other stuff (spiritual stuff) wasn't taught in the class. If your heart belongs to the Lord, the Devil can't take that away from you - no matter what physical exercise you choose to perform.

I think this thought about yoga comes from long ago. I have always been told to never "clear" your mind from God because it allows Satan to come in.
To Christians, we are surrounded by the prince of the air (Satan) everyday, not just a yoga class. Keep your mind focused on God in all that you do.

I don't understand what you're saying. Satan is the prince of air? Clearing your brain lets Satan in? Keep your mind focussed on god no matter what you do? I don't get it. Could you explain further?

I haven't read that article, but the view has been around for a while. Meanwhile, some of us (me) attend churches that OFFER yoga classes, Tai Chi, etc. The Christian church I used to attend shares its building with a Hindi group needing a place to worship. Not everyone fears...

Back in the 70's I heard the same thing about meditation. Didn't buy it then. Don't buy it now.

Yeah there was a huge thread on the old board about this. I personally find it ridiculous. Yoga can be spiritual if you want it to be. Or it can just be exercise. But it certainly has nothing to do with the devil or evil.

It's a bit bothersome to think that the minute your mind is 'empty' then whoosh - in swoops the devil to fill the vacuum! I mean....who doesn't have moments of vague mental emptiness?

I mean....who doesn't have moments of vague mental emptiness? Gar (and others), when you get to be my age, those moments are more frequent.

Regina, thank you for that link about spiritual husband; saw that last night online and was shocked. Some of the responses are hilarious, though.
Yoga, like TM (transcendental meditation), is considered by many in certain religions to be wrong because it "opens up your mind to let the devil in." I don't get it, but that's the prevailing thought.

A family sued the Encinitas School District when they started an elementary school yoga program because they didn't want their child introduced to non-Christian beliefs/Hinduism. The judge ruled the program was secular. Encinitas yoga controversy

I have a dear Christian friend who attends "Hot" yoga classes at a secular studio. She tells me that it's one of the most spiritual parts of her week. She uses the quiet time to connect with God and pray.
