Right to die case, permission came too late Leadership tussle between 3 candidates to head up the opposition. Real twist is that they whacked the ruling party for non-disclosure of donor funding, now they are pulling the same stunt.

Our big story was actually last week - we had PONYTAILGATE
Our Prime Minister was at a pretty casual sort of restaurant, and pulled his waitress's pony-tail.
Shock!!! Horror!!!! Disgrace!!!!
Apparently it was a restaurant he goes to often, and he knows the waitress from his previous visits, and it was all in fun, and he didn't mean any harm, and .....
How on earth this made front page news around the country, for several days in a row, I have no idea. Silly thing for him to do, but surely that cannot be our country's biggest news story. And now there is talk she will take him to court for sexual harassment. Ridiculous!!!

-- Hillary Clinton. -- US Supreme Court hearing on same-sex marriage. -- Baltimore. (same region, although not quite "local" -- about 40 miles)
Since I live just across the river from Washington, DC the national news is often our local news. But, if you want to get really local then my town's most recent big news might be the school overcrowding. The best way to rile people up around here is to utter the words "school boundary changes". lol

Tsarnaev Death Penalty Trial
Guards face manslaughter charges in inmate's death
Patriots choose "Vilfork replacement" in first round
The first is the only one I know anything about. For anyone who doesn't recognize the name Tsarnaev, he's the convicted Boston Marathon Bomber. I'm torn as to whether I'd rather he be executed or made to spend his life in prison.

Proposal 1 to fix our crappy roads. My county has 80% of its roads rated as poor.
Car insurance bill in the Senate. MI has the highest car insurance rates in the country.
Hmmm, worse roads in the country (or close to it) and highest car insurance rates in the country.

The principal at my kid's formal elementary school was removed 2 plus month ago for supposedly bullying some teachers. Now the school board and police have banned her from setting foot on any school property. Over the past two months anonymous e-mails have been sent to parents bashing the school board and supporting her (she has a 22 year successful track record). Her fiancee showed up at the school with pizzas for the teachers, she showed up at a meeting to discuss why she was removed, and then she was removed by the police. The official investigation on her alleged bullying is not complete yet and apparently no one in the superintendent's office will return her phone calls. The investigation was only to take a few weeks. There is some mention of this in our newspapers at least once a week.

I got nothing. Although, if I went by my twitter feed it would be Billy Donovan leaving UF, Jameis Winston as first pick of the NFL draft (Bucs) and Dante Fowler as overall third pick to Jacksonville. And I don't follow any sports specific people, but I do follow the University of Florida, so this appears to the hottest topic every.

The biggest news story in Australia has been the execution of two Australian drug smugglers in Bali.
10 years ago a group nine Australians tried to smuggle about $4 Million of heroin out of Bali into Australia (widely referred to as the "Bali nine"). There's been different sentences, appeals etc, sentences changed for some from life in prison to death by firing squad and back again. Finally the two main ringleaders got a death sentence, and it's been building up over the last couple of months.
The Australian Government were trying to get their death sentences changed to life in prison. There were lots of appeals for mercy to the Bali Government. But it all failed and they along with six others (from Brazil, Nigeria & Indonesia) were executed by shots through the heart on 29th April. The footage of their relatives seeing them for the last time to say good bye was pretty harrowing.
Lots of divided opinions about this. Australia has had some very high profile drug smuggling cases in the media, the people who do this know full well what the risks are and they know they could face the death penalty if they get caught. Then the other opinion is that they have reformed in their last 10 years in prison and they should be shown some mercy and not be executed for drug crimes. A lot of people don't think our Government did enough.

We are surely hearing a lot about Baltimore because it's the next closest big city.
We are also hearing that our county sent some search-rescue personnel to Nepal and they were part of finding and rescuing a young man still alive after 5 days. I'm proud of them for even going into such a scenario. A tiny spot of good news in the middle of an astonishing disaster. So we are hearing a bit about that too.

CNN (I think it was CNN) did a story on the urban search and rescue team out of Fairfax county as they were deploying. As I understand it, they are one of only two in the country that are officially sanctioned by the government and are the go to team when it comes to events like this (outside of the military.) I was so impressed with them.

Our media have been following the story of course, but it's got so bogged down in the executions and political aspect and possible consequences that I hadn't absorbed the info' that the whole thing started 10 years ago. Certain things read now make more sense.

pjaye that story has been quite heavily featured in our news too. Those scenes of the families were hard to watch That's interesting, I was actually wondering if it was making news anywhere else. What are they saying about them over there?
They've had a really sympathetic portrayal here over the last few weeks, which I think has made a lot of people forget the magnitude of what they tried to do. Several of them had done it before and no doubt if they were successful they would have all done it again, the two that were executed were well organised, this wasn't a just spur of the moment stupid idea.

What are they saying about them over there? I'm in Norway, and it's been in the news here aswell. Not heavily featured, but it's been in the news over the last week or so. I do pay a little extra attention to Australian news coming through our media though, as I used to live in Qld (2002-2006). I think the general feeling about the Bali Nine over here is focused on the deathpenalty. We don't have the deathpenalty here, and I think most Norwegians deem it as quite barbaric. It's not uncommon to see reports about Americans being executed in the US aswell. The Norwegian media doesn't seem to be very sympathetic to a government executing people in general. I saw a statement from Tony Abbott he released shortly after the execution of the Bali Nine, he seemed to think thay had done a lot to convince Bali not to execute the Australian citizens and he was sad to see them go through with it anyway. I think it was a FB-post of his.

Yes, I think taking 10 years made our Government think it may not actually happen...then it started to become clear they were making plans and this would really take place. There have been other Australians executed for drug crimes in the past, but it went a lot faster from arrest to execution than these two did.
The other thing that makes this more interesting and controversial is that the father of one of them men knew his son was planning this, so he tipped off the Australian Federal police...he wanted them to either stop his son from going to Bali, or to arrest them in this country of their way back. However the police deny that they agreed to this, they say there was no way they could stop him when he hadn't yet committed a crime. The Australian police then tipped off the Bali police, and basically they were waiting for them from the time they arrived and arrested them at the airport once they had the drugs and were trying to leave. Lots of people here blame the Australian federal police for handling this badly and allowing them to be arrested over there in stead of here.
I personally don't agree, the police force are there for a reason, they have a job to do - the public can't dictate to them how and when they should act. Their job is to maintain the law...not to babysit grown men and stop them getting themselves into trouble.

Today is Labor Day in Norway, and there have been a few newsreports surrounding that. One of the things that always gets a lot of headlines this time of year is our graduating HS seniors partying a lot in April and May. May 1st being a public holiday, you bet your ass the HS seniors were partying last night They are over the legal age to drink alcohol here. Sadly, there are ALWAYS reports of rapes during their parties. And it seems that every year one or two HS seniors who are at the BIG parties organized, that often goes over a few days, get admitted to the hospital with contagious menengitis (I think I am translating that correctly). In my hometown there was a soccermatch last night, and apparantly our team won. I should have figured, cause I live close enough to the stadium to hear the roaring when the locals score But there was something about the team's best player getting a red card, and was not able to play the rest of the game. A red card means you did something pretty bad/ against the rules on the field (sorry about the over-explanation, I'm not sure how many of you are familiar with soccer). Oh, and because of Labor Day, I just had a Marching Band walk past my house to play at the Nursing Home next door Spring has arrived

@pjaya I personally haven't heard enough to form an opinion about the individuals, the focus here too has mainly been on the death penalty itself and the link with the English lady. I don't have much sympathy with drug smugglers but the death penalty doesn't always sit easily either.

Thanks for the links, interesting reading. I'm torn as well, on one hand they knew the risks...plus I think of all the lives that they would have negatively affected (and potentially caused deaths) with that $4 million of heroin. They didn't show much sympathy or concern for others in their plan to make money. But I agree executing them doesn't sit right either.
Interesting too, that polls they do on this over here comes out almost even, with half agreeing with the death penalty and half opposed.
