As a kid growing up in the Sixties, the neighborhood kids would celebrate May Day by leaving flowers, candy, small treats and such on neighbors' door knobs. We'd cover paper cups with crepe paper, make a pipe cleaner handle, fill, deliver to a neighbor, ring the bell and run. Do remember doing this too?

I did this too. Back in the 80s. Seems like a couple of years, we made the little "baskets" as art projects in elementary school too. We would usually leave them for the little old lady who lived across the street from us.

I'm a child of the 70s, and we absolutely did this! It was usually the cone-style baskets made out of old wallpaper samples, but sometimes we got fancy and made the cootie-catcher style baskets. I've done these sometimes with 7yo DD, but not every year. I had DH plant me some flowering bushes specifically because they're usually ready right in time for May baskets! If we can get it together tonight, we might try to run a few out!

Hooray, hooray, the first of May. Outside screwing begins today. Well, I don't but I always say it. I remember weaving May Poles at school, and when it was stopped because Russia was doing a May 1 celebration.

Yep, way back in the dark ages, 50s and 60s, we did this also. We'd make those paper cones with a pasted on paper handle, fill them with flowers and hang them on the neighbor's door handles. We usually stole the flowers out of the yards of the people that we gave them to.

I remember doing the May Pole dances and didn't understand why we stopped. I thought it was because it involved "dancing"--growing up Baptist and all.

Dancing around Maypoles holding coloured ribbons attached to the top and wearing flower circlets in the hair was a huge thing in English villages and towns at one time. It doesn't seem to be practised anywhere near as much now, and hasn't been for a while, but some places do have special events for May Day still. I was just hearing that the city of Oxford had a big May Day event starting from sunrise. A few of our county village schools do something special and I assume that a few villages all over England will also do that.

Yes, I remember celebrating May Day in the early sixties. I went to a Catholic grade school. We went to church, had a procession to the outside statues. We would crown and place flowers around Blessed Virgin Mary. We also made/decorated baskets out of cottage cheese containers.

Yes! We did that for all our neighbors. It was so fun. I always think of that on May Day. So many things about our childhood was so much simpler....Sigh.

I celebrated May day in the '50's in the midwest. We made baskets, filled them with candy, and rang our friend's doors. We'd run real fast to avoid getting kissed because that was the penalty if you were caught. Fun memories!

I am not Catholic, but went to Catholic schools. In the 1950's we made flower wreaths and baskets for the Virgin Mary and crowned her Queen of May.

No, but I sure would love to see these kinds of traditions revived and become popular again.

My daughters last school had a HUGE May day celebration, each grade danced the May Pole getting more and more intricate as the grades grew.. the older kids often had a some people drumming.
Everyone dressed as a fairy, sprite, elf, or butterfly, or woodland creature, and they finished by having strawberries and homemade whipped cream.
I miss it.
Ok that was off topic but yes we did the basket thing and we also stole flowers out of neighbors yards.. it was NOT well received AT all!!

I have 4 siblings and there were many, many kids in our neighborhood. We always called May first May Basket Day. It was my favorite holiday!
