I keep hearing how great it is also, and I keep thinking I need to add it to my list, but I keep resisting. I just don't think I'll like it. I like historical fiction, I especially like WWII era history, but I just don't have a desire to read this. I don't know why.

I really enjoyed that book but I didn't love the ending ... I felt that it was beautifully written but I can see how it might not appeal to everyone

I liked it, but it's certainly not going on my list of the best books I've ever read.

I with you OP. I read a lot, my favourite genre is historical fiction, especially anything about ww2. This book should have been right up my alley. I didn't even mind the characters switching back and forth, that happens in a lot of the books I read, and in most it flows very smoothly. In this book it wasn't smooth. The ending was jarring and confusing. It's as if the author couldn't figure out how to end the storyline so he just threw something together. There were parts of the story that didn't fit and probably didn't even need to be there. It wasn't a cohesive book. That's my opinion. I don't get all of the hype. I read it wanting to like it but I just didn't. There are so many other books out there, so I've moved on. We like what we like, right? But I'm in your corner Debbie in MD.

I just told my sister in law today that I have been listening to this book since July last year!! I cannot get through it at all and I'm listening to it at 1.5x speed. I adore historical fiction and WWII stuff is always interesting to me, but that book? I don't care for any of the characters. At all.
You're not alone OP!

I am so glad to hear there are others who could not get into this book either. I have checked it out twice from the library and both times I just felt it was blah and put it aside. Between this book and Girl on the Train that everybody has raved about, I feel like a book loser.

I read it and liked it, but didn't love it. I work in a library and read a ton of different 'stuff', this would be something I would suggest to a patron, but not something I would sell as a personal favourite!

Count me as another reader who couldn't get into this book and returned it to the library.

Ugh. I am reading it right now and was hoping it would get better. I have been struggling through it. According to my kindle I have three hours left. I should just plug away and get it done. I have several others that I have had on request forever and now they are all mine at the same time. I would like to get started on one of those but feel like I should finish this one first.

I went to Amazon and skimmed through the excerpt. It is not a book I would enjoy at all. Just doesn't meet my expectations of a fun read. My thoughts exactly.

I liked it,too. But I finished The Nightingale last night and it was much more the kind of story I enjoy. Ithe might be my favorite in a long time. Try it. I liked The Nightingale, too.

I enjoyed Nightingale so much more. I really got the characters...I felt their struggle. I didn't feel that with this book. I downloaded a Nicholas Sparks book for my next read - LOL. I need something totally fluf!

I loved this book so much. It was a hard read but so moving. Sort of reminded me of The True Story of Hansel and Gretal. Not easy, not a pleasurable read, so to speak, but something I felt better for having read...if that makes any sense.

I liked it but didn't think it was the best thing I'd read in ages or anything like that. I feel the same way about "Girl On the Train". It was okay but not all that for me. I felt like it was a "Gone Girl" knockoff and not anywhere near as well done. ITA.i don't get the hoopla over that one.
