I am not new to sbing, but new to die cutting. I want to buy some Papertrey Ink dies for my planner, but I don't have a cutting machine. How is the Cuttlebug or Big Shot? I have no idea what I'm talking about, so if you have any suggestions on a basic die cutting machine, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

I don't have any of the Paper Trey dies specifically, but I've cut thin dies with both a Cuttlebug and with a Big Shot/Big Kick. The only real difference is that you can do bigger things with the Big Shot because it's got a wider opening.

With the Big Shot, you will be able to use different sizes of dies. The cuttlebug is for smaller dies. I guess you just need to think about what you will want in the future.

I have a Cuttlebug. It fits the A2 embossing folders and smaller dies. It works for me.

If you specifically want to use Papertrey INk dies, I would suggest going to Papertrey Ink's Youtube channel. I know that they have at least one video that shows them using Papertrey dies with both he Cuttlebug and Big Shot. It will give you an idea of how it works (what plates to use to sandwich the dies)'if nothing else! HTH!

I had a Cuttlebug and sold it. The Big Shot can do so much more. I have many PTI dies, and they work great in my Big Shot.

Another vote here for the Big Shot. I love mine and haven't found any brand of dies I can't cut with it. It's more expensive than the Cuttlebug, but it also is able to cute a wider variety of dies. I got my Big Shot using a 40% off coupon at HL so that made the price a little bit easier to stomach.

Thanks Everyone! I was leaning towards the Cuttlebug, but now I'm seriously looking into the Big Shot. Thanks again!

I recommend the Sizzix Big Kick. It functions the same as the Sizzix Big Shot, but cosmetically looks different & costs less. HTH & happy diecutting!

I think I read that the difference between two machines (Big Shot and Big Kick) is that one is sold by chain stores only and the other by LSS. www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBZcwrTNrYcThis might be the video that explains it.

I also recommend a Big Shot or Big Kick. I upgraded from a Cuttlebug a few years ago and think the BS is superior. I also have a lot of PTI dies and they always cut very well.

Oh, and search for sales on the Big Shot. I actually got mine direct through Sizzix for $29!!!! They were getting rid of the Big Kitty Big Shots and sold them dirt cheap. Would I usually have chosen Big Kitty, no but hey for $29, it's been great!

Another vote for the Big Shot/Big Kick! I love mine DH bought it for me for my birthday when it first came out in black and pink. I know he overpaid on it, but I seriously have used the heck out of that machine and it operates the same as it did on day one. I've used my friend,s Cuttlebug at a crop and it was nice, but the "sandwich" combo thing kept confusing me with all the covers and whatnot. My big shot has the multi-use platform that makes it so easy! They also have a magnet one now and you might want that if you're going to use mostly PTI metal dies. It helps be a bit more precise when you put your dies down on the platform. I also like that I can use thicker dies, like Tim Holtz's, in my Big Shot, which I couldn't do in a Cuttlebug. I even have some old, old Sizzix dies in basic shapes that I can use in there. And @patter, you got an AMAZING deal on yours! Great suggestion to look at the Sizzix site.

Would I usually have chosen Big Kitty, no but hey for $29, it's been great! So funny! We have this one too and also paid $29. I bought it for my daughter when she was 7 or 8, a few years ago. She used it for a while and, of course, I can use it anytime. I have a Cuttlebug myself, but if I had to choose, it would be Big Shot all the way.

I have a Cuttlebug and I'm happy with it. I toyed w/the Big Kick or Big Shot, but at this point in my scrappy life, I don't have the place to leave it out all the time. The Cuttlebug is a lot more portable so it made the most sense for me right now. If I ever get my own space and can let my machine have a happy little permanent home, then I plan to upgrade.

I recommend the BS or BK, too. I had an Epic, which was a horrible machine. Uneven pressure and eventually broke a gear. I have a Revolution which I love, but it's limited to wafer thin dies no wider than 4". The Cuttlebug isn't as sturdy as the BS/BK, but it is smaller and lighter. The magnetic platform with the BS/BK is a perfect solution for me. You can use steel rule dies (the thick ones), the plastic Sizzix dies, Cuttlebug dies, embossing folders, border dies, etc. It cuts all the dies that will fit within a 6" opening.

I also recommend the Big Shot and got mine on a big sale when Sizzix was selling their clearance/outlet stuff on eBay rather than at their site.

I also love my Big Shot. I have been thinking of upgrading to the Plus machine .... Cuz bigger is better right?? LOL. I use it on almost every layout. Definitely a good investment.

So I have a ton of those papertrey ink dies and use a cuttlebug, have for years I also have the huge XL sizzix machine..and my bff has the big shot. 1. I think it depends on the footprint or size of space you plan to store the machine. I have limited space and I like that the cuttlebug folds up, but it is tiring to unfold and fold it up all the time where the sizzix is always flat. 2. How easy it is to get replacement mats for die cutting machine. I buy the cuttlebug from Michaels and Joanns. and lastly if you don't plan on leaving it out on your desk think about how much lifting and weight that thing is. For me my cuttlebug is at least 5lbs everytime I pick it up.
Both will cut well. I also like that I don't have to fuss with the sandwich thing that the sizzix has. I just grab an A plate a B plate and a C plate.
Also note that at times those paptertrey ink dies may also need a thin metal plate or a shim of some sort to get the to cut cleanly, but most times they don't.

I will tell you that the "sandwiches" for the Cuttlebug were VERY confusing to me. I had to use a reference sheet every time. Drove me nuts. I also didn't like that I couldn't use all dies in it. The Big Shot has been SO easy to use and cuts everything.

I always watch these threads with interest. I have the original Silhouette, which is still going strong after lots of use for about 8 years. One of these days I'll get a die cutter for chipboard and embossing. The Big Shot always seems to be the one that comes out on top on these discussions. The Anna Griffin Cuttlebug looks good too, and I would use her old fashioned embossing folders and dies, because I'm an old lady like that. The Big Shot sounds more versatile.

Yes you need for most thin dies (any wafer thin die) all 3 plates (A, B and C) the only time you use the two B plates is for embossing or some of the thicker dies. And if you buy replacement packs, note that you get 2 of them, not just one. I think the first time I replaced my B plate (this is the one I let the cutting edge cut against which marks it up) I bought 2 packs not realizing you actually get two of them in there. I have only replaced my C plate once in the past 10 years. Just don't cut against it. And never replaced my A plate, again never cut against it.

I enjoy my Big Kick. My friend has the Cuttlebug and we always have to look on the computer to see what plates she needs for the die she is using. I like it that the BK multi purpose plate has the sandwich directions right on it.

The Cuttlebug plates were such a pain. I never understood it and hated looking it up every time I used the thing.
