David Simon Talks About Where the Baltimore Police Went Wrong
This is one of the harder things I have read in a long time and I thought it would make for a good discussion. Martin O'Malley comes off terribly - I don't know much about him yet but if this is true, I have no idea how he can be considered a viable Presidential contender. I don't know how a city even begins to recover from systemic and criminal mismanagement of this magnitude.

Wow. I live in the suburbs of Baltimore and wow. For years I taught in the city. It was very difficult. And that was years ago. I don't really follow politics. I'm a democrat but also have been wondering (with the little knowledge that I have) how O'Malley could think he is presidential material. Was talking to my brother in law (he's a lawyer) about it and he said, "Don't worry, he won't be president. They're getting him ready to be the vice president." Very interesting how the whole parts Demo or Repub. gets together and plans out the part that each candidate will play. Almost like directing a play. I don't know how they recover from this either. It has to start with honest politicians and police.

I saw that a few days ago (I'm a fan of The Wire as a show). I thought it was a pretty devastating takedown. On the one hand, I practiced this stuff and research this stuff, and what he describes is . . . familiar. There are reasons that NYC got a lot of attention in the recent mayoral election over stop-and-frisk -- some of the policies of prior mayors were, at best, misguided.
On the other hand, Clinton is trying to run as someone who will appeal to both the mainstream left (that has soured on mass incarceration and overbearing police tactics) and the libertarian-leaning segment of the independents (who similarly have been historically skeptical of the kinds of things we've done to fight the supposedly-ended War on Drugs). Honestly, if she is going to be saying the kinds of things that she has been saying recently about mass incarceration, she is going to have a hard time running with any VP candidate who was a mayor of a large city from the late 1980s to the early 2000s.
Of course, I could say a few snarky things about how she is trying to fix the problems that her own husband in part set in place, but . . . ok, I guess I just did.

Yeah, that should be required reading for all those who say "If they'd just do what the cops tell them to do, no one would get hurt".

TFS
I think many of the things he says in that article are very insightful. I also think that he's saying things that many people don't want to hear, and definitely won't want to discuss. And that many people who need to read it won't.
