I've been sick since Thursday night, and I don't know what to do. A stomach thing.
I'm going to put in a break here, because this is probably TMI and disgusting.
Sorry to be gross, but diarrhea every day- not uncontrollable OMG run to the toilet diarrhea, but pretty much every time I use the bathroom- pure liquid. Have been taking immodium every morning after the worst of it. I've been throwing up, too. Once early morning on Friday, once last night. Those were really bad. Very nauseous and never-ending queasy since Thursday. No temperature, at least from the crappy thermometer that we have. Seriously, do those Walgreens thermometers that you stick in your ear and it takes your temp in one second even work?
Anyway, it's been 5 days. I'm now missing my second day of work (Friday and today). What do I do? Is there anything I can do to shake this crappy feeling? I feel like I should be eating, but I have no idea what. I've been nibbling on crackers, rice cakes, applesauce. I had a McDonalds's cheeseburger (one of the little ones) and a couple of french fries over the weekend- twice- Saturday it stayed down, and yesterday I threw it up. Although it was a while after I had eaten, and I suspect the puking had more to do with the fact that I had been moving around getting my toddler up from his nap.
I also have a sore throat- it feels like I've swallowed rocks. The throat was really bad Saturday, better Sunday, now today its bad again and I'm coughing up a lot of stuff.
I need a mom. I need someone to tell me what to do.
Do you want to hear something crazy??? Part of me feels like my body... and me... are just giving up. I've been so stressed out at work lately and have gotten quite a bit of upsetting news over the past few weeks. I just feel like, in a way, this is me subconsciously throwing in the towel somehow. I mean, trust me, I have no control over what's going on with my backside, and I did NOT choose to throw up, and if I knew how to turn this nauseous feeling ON i would certainly turn it OFF. But there's also an element of... hopelessness there, too, somehow. But at the same time, I am genuinely completely freaked out at the thought that I've missed so much work lately.
OK, ignore that last paragraph. I don't know what I'm saying. But I really need a mom to make things OK right now. Thanks.
*******************************************************************************************
UPDATE: First of all, y'all have been so sweet. Thank you for your kind words and virtual hugs and finger wags. So I went to the doctor. You peas probably heard me cursing you out about 1:00 central time because I made it as far as the parking lot before I started puking my guts out in the car. All I could think was "If I were home in bed I probably wouldn't be throwing up right now." But I'm glad I went because, yes, while the dr thinks this is probably just a virus of some kind, she's also a little worried about possible gallbladder issues. She pressed on my stomach and the upper right side was.... tender. Not painful, but it definitely felt different on that side and I continued to feel uncomfortable there even 10 minutes after she had stopped touching me. She did some bloodwork and I'll have the results tomorrow, and if there's something off with the bloodwork she'll probably send me for an ultrasound.
In the meantime, she also prescribed some medication to help with the nausea and my goal is to try and get some food to stay down. If I can do that I will hopefully start to feel better. Dr said for sure no work tomorrow, and days after that will really depend on the test results and whether my symptoms stabilize.
And hey! Bonus! I lost 10 pounds in 5 days! Yay me!

It sounds like your immunity is down and you're just ran down. I'd start with not eating things like McDonald's. You asked for someone to be your mom and that's me doing it. Seriously, that is not going to help if you're not feeling well. Stick to the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast). Drink plenty of fluids; water, gingerale, a little Gatorade. ETA: I do hope you feel better soon. (<--- also me being your mom)

You need to go to the doctor. It could be mono or a urinary tract infection. Believe it or not, those are very similar to the symptoms my MIL had with a UTI.
Hugs from a cyber mom! Now, get up, get showered and GO TO THE DOCTOR!
ETA - please update after you GO TO THE DOCTOR.

You poor thing! First, don't worry about missing work. It'll be harder to recover when you're so stressed, which is probably what's leading the hopeless thoughts.
Second, get yourself to the doctor. Walk in clinic is fine for this. It's been too many days and you're probably dehydrated. You really need to see a doctor.
Third, and this is my tough love mom coming out, quit eating McDonalds! That's rough on even the healthiest system. You need to be gentle with your body right now.
I hope you feel better soon! Check back in with us and let us know how you're doing.

Ugh...poor you! I have to admit I don't really know what the problem might be but I wouldn't have any more McDonalds!! Are you drinking lots of water? You probably need to replace lost electrolytes after everything you've lost.

Sore throat and nauseous feeling could be strep throat. I haven't heard of diarrhea with it, but my daughter used to get strep throat a lot. As soon as she would complain that her stomach hurt (and sometimes she would throw up) and had a sore throat, it was off to the doctor we went.
I hope you feel better soon, but after the 5th day of this, I think you should visit a doctor.

Well, there is something just like this going around here in the schools right now. We thinks it's a wintertime thing but clearly not. ugh. No more McDonald's and go to the doctor. If it is this stomach virus thing that we have here there really isn't anything much the doctor can do. But -- it might be something else like strep throat (which can give intestinal symptoms, especially if you're generally rundown to begin with) or some other type of bacterial infection that could be treated by antibiotics. Doctor. Go to the doctor. [you asked for a mother, and if you were my kid I'd be taking you to the doctor] I hope you feel better soon! eta: lol, Mtscrapper and I were typing at the same time about strep. Let us know if that's it. lol

I had a similiar virus last week. Several people I know have it too. It seems to last about 5 days start to finish. I know it is not fun but you hopefully are at the tail end of it. Drink tons of water. I thought I was drinking enough but at the end of the five days my lips are incredibly chapped.
Maybe take today to relax, and figure out the best way to handle all thats been thrown at you the last couple of weeks. I know if I feel like I can ground myself a bit and figure out a plan, I can handle things better.
Hope your feeling back to normal soon!

You all think I'm crazy for having McDonalds. But my mom would always tell me- if you've been sick and throwing up, then as soon as something sounds good it's probably ok to eat. And DH was going to McD's for the kids, and I was so hungry even though I was so nauseous (do you know that feeling? that's the worst feeling) and one of those little cheeseburgers sounded good. It had protein. I was excited at the thought of protein. But I hear you- it's crap. Do you really think I should go to the doctor? I feel like all they're going to tell me... all they EVER tell me or the kids... "It's a virus. There's nothing you can do but wait it out." DAMN I miss the days when your mom took you to the doctor and they gave you the pink stuff for EVERYTHING. I mean, yes, I know that's bad, and superbugs, and resistance to antibiotics, and all that. But at least it felt like you were doing SOMETHING. And now I'm crying again. So, really, the doctor?

While he may not be able to do something about it, he will be able to rule out somethings (like strep, UTI). I am more worried about you dehydrating vs what is actually causing all this. Please go get checked out.

Have you ever thought of being a writer? You have an engaging, wonderful humorous delivery of things.
Anyways, if it was just one or two of the symptoms you describe, I wouldn't see a doctor. For all of them and the length of it, I would. Or, at least I would call the doctor and describe what was going on. Often they will tell you that they've seen a lot of that recently and they can or can't make it better.
In the meantime, like another poster suggested, avoid McD and junk food and stick to the BRAT diet. Eat only foods that are easy on the digestive system. Avoid dairy and greasy things.
Good luck and hope you're feeling better soon.

Mama Bear here. Yes, go to the Doctor. It may be a virus or might not be. I agree it could be strep as my DD always had stomach issues too with hers. Take care of yourself. Hugs!

You poor thing. Here you wouldn't be allowed back in work till 48 hours after your last bout of symptoms so stop worrying about work and try to relax a little.
Just nibble at bits like dry toast, thin soup, chicken and rice, your insides need a rest. Lots of fluids even if you don't feel thirsty, just sip a little and often be it water, flat lemonade, ginger ale.
Definitely ring the doctor just to run your symptoms past him; saves going out if you feel miserable and he says to continue as you are doing.
Hope you start to feel a lot better very soon!

Personally the McDonald's doesn't worry me, if you truly think it's just going around then stay hydrated and eat what you want, I'm of the opinion that if it's something that appeals to you, it's better than nothing which is what I feel like when I'm sick like that. but if you think it's bacterial, (like you were just on antibiotics or had a hospital stay) go get some probiotics and go see the doctor. They may have to test your stool which is gross but at least you'll know what's wrong.

At least call your MD's office and let them decide whether you need to see them today or not. I'd be concerned about dehydration and with the sore throat also strep. I second a brat type diet until you are feeling much better! Plain type things are better for a queasy stomach. The grease from McDonalds's probably isn't the best thing, although I wouldn't say it seems to have had a negative effect since you kept it down Definitely get your MD's opinion on being seen. Hope you feel better soon.

I would be as worried about dehydration as anything else, and you need to make sure you're replacing your electrolytes. I ended up in the hospital due to dehydration from something similar, once...
I say go to the doctor, also.

Whenever I'm not sure if I should go in (or bring my kid in), I call the clinic and ask to speak with a triage nurse and explain the symptoms or whatever is going on. If it sounds to her/him like it's something minor, they will give me some suggestions to try based on the symptoms and our history, and they will tell me what to do next if it doesn't. If there are any red flags, they tell me to make an appointment. I'd say they tell me to come in about 50% of the time.
I do hope you start feeling better soon!

Yes please see the doctor, emergency room or clinic if you must. You could have something simple, or have developed C-diff. You're not over reacting, and of course it will feel hopeless. It's gross (I mean that in a comforting consoling way, if that's possible ) Give us an update when you can, but go to Dr NOW. Said in a stern mom voice with wagging finger...

We have had a really bad winter and it doesn't seem to end. We had the norovirus at several schools in the county, including the one I sub at the most. Now winter is over but we're still paying for it -- losing our half-days to make up snow days and illnesses still going around. ugh

My doctor would tell me it's a virus, she has seen it all week and to go to bed. I agree go see him or her as you will know exactly what you are dealing with, but my gut (sorry I had to) tells me it's stomach flu and you have it. It sucks the life out of you.

It sounds like C diff! Your Dr can prescribe an antibiotic. Along with that, I would take a probiotic to help put back into balance the good/bad bacteria in your gut.
Eat yogurts and soft cheeses if you can and drink plenty of fluids.
XOXO Mom

This is too long to have a stomach virus IMO. It also concerns me that your diarrhea isn't loose stool but watery, and that immodium isn't making any difference. You are almost certainly dehydrated at this point which can lead to nausea. You might need IV treatment at this point. See or talk to your doctor. There are meds for the nausea and there's no reason you shouldn't be taking something to help you out.
Apparently the BRAT diet is no longer the gold standard for eating when you have diarrhea or a gastrointestinal illness. Eat whatever feels right to you, healthy or not, it doesn't matter. In the past I've found that McDonald's french fries are soothing to an upset tummy (only McDonald's, and they must be fresh. . . not so sure about the cheeseburger!).
As someone else mentioned, you MUST stay home a minimum of 48 hours after your last symptom; if you don't, you're just spreading the virus to those you work with.
I feel for you, I really do.
