DD's Middle School IB Program requires 20 hours of community service per year.
DD has made baked goods for our local fire house for the last two years.
This year she did some hours at her school and Relay for Life last weekend
DD wanted to again bake for the fire fighters to complete her last 3 hours.
She even included a note of thanks for all they do and sacrifice.
To her surprise, yesterday (May 4th) happened to be International Firefighters' Day!
Both she and the firefighters were especially happy with the mini muffins and cookies that happened to be made and delivered on that day!

Baking for a group counts as community service?
(Not being judgey, just really curious . Dd bakes for a volunteer group often and I wasn't aware that these could count for community service hour)
ETA: congrats to your dd on all get hours!!

The schools in our district have listed it as such and DD wrote it in her proposal in the 6th grade. One cake, brownies , or batch of cookies, prepared and delivered equals one hour. I did a quick google search and it seems to be the standard. ETA - I also had her write an email to the fire chief to ask if this is something that they would want. I know the peas always talk about homemade food items.

What a kind thing to do. I think kids need to learn to give back and you're doing a great job of teaching that to your DD!

Our school district requires 40 hours of community service for graduation and you would be surprised at what qualifies as community service. It can be something as simple as donating toys to our rotating emergency shelter at Christmas to volunteering at a fundraising 5K to working at the latchkey program at school. It has to be a non-profit. I'm not sure that baking cookies for firefighters would qualify in our district, but it is a nice gesture all the same.

In our school district, to receive an Advanced Studies Diploma, 80 hour of community service are required over the 4 years of high school. There are no requirements for regular middle school, but DD is in the IB program where 20 hours are required every year.

Baking is a great idea and how perfect to do it on International Firefighters' Day. I was a little surprised at what was considered community service for DS's IB middle school. He got credit for participating in the city's Strawberry Festival 5K for 3 years in a row. The first year I was sure he misunderstood and was supposed to sign up to help at the event, but he was correct, all he needed to do was participate by running. If you or your child is ever stuck for volunteer opportunities, please check out VolunteerMatch.org. DS has used it numerous times this year to find local events where he can help for a few hours. In the last few weeks he has done beach clean-ups and helped at the local March for Babies. volunteermatch.org
