I'm sorry that this post is all over the place, we leave tonight and we're in that panic packing mode... that's how we roll. Question for locals or those who have been to Legoland's water park, is it an all day park? We're def doing Legoland. Ds really wants to do the water park as well. I'm not into water parks that much so will probably bop into Legoland proper some the day we're at the water park - if our tickets allow that. Speaking of which, the ticket options are very confusing... we're still trying to figure out what we're going to do. Dh will be at a conference part of our vacation. We'll have Sat and Sun to do things as a family. I think we're going to do Legoland Sat, the water park Sun and the Safari Park on Monday. Tues, Wed & Thurs it will be me and the kids (13 yo girl, 10 yo boy). We're probably do the Midway, the Birch Aquarium, tide pools/beach time... Friday & Sat will two more days as a family Dh, not sure what we're going to do. We leave Saturday night at 7:00pm. We fly into and out of Orange County. Are we glaringly leaving anything out that we should try to do? We have those two days at the end of the week that we need to plan. We're not interested in the zoo, Sea World this trip. THANK YOU!!!

Relaxing at the pool at your hotel one day Though I'm not sure how old your kids are, when mine were younger (grade school and below) our most successful vacations always included some down time. Actually now that I think about it no matter what our ages we do better when we put in some down time!

We just moved to San Diego (from Orange County - you will LOVE that airport! So easy!), so I don't have a lot of great suggestions for you. But if you've never been, I highly recommend visiting the San Diego Zoo - it's fantastic. It's open until 9pm during the summer, so you can see the animals when they're more active. There are lots of other museums in Balboa Park as well, as you can get ticket packages that offer discounts to multiple places to visit. I'm not sure where you're staying, but there are lots of fun beach towns north of the city to check out (great beaches, shops, restaurants, etc.). Dori's advice about having down time is great, too. We just got back from a trip where we built in quite a bit of that, and it was wonderful. Have a fantastic trip!!!

Legoland can definitely be an all day activity!
For your other days I would take a your of the Waley House (it's a haunted house in Old Town) check out museums at Balboa Park and spend a day relaxing at the pool! The Naional History museum has an exhibit on pirates right now that looks really cool. The Reuben H Science Center is interactive and there is an IMAX theater. The Museum of Man is always interesting too.

Dori - pool chillin' is a great idea. We may pair that with the Midway. I think the hotel has a nice little roof top pool. Last time we went to San Diego we did the 4 day Go San Diego Card. It was insane. We had a great time, but I was so exhausted after those four days, as were the children.
Thanks!!

I would try to do both Legoland and the water park in the same day since you can't buy a ticket for the water park without buying one for Legoland. I'm local and would love to hit the water park but not with needing a Legoland ticket too.
In my experience, the lines for Legoland can move very slowly if crowded. The water park wasn't an all day thing but they've added to it which could change that.
I like Mission Beach for a day of fun in the sand plus they have a small amusement park there where you just pay for rides. They also have a large indoor pool, wave rider type of thing and you can rent bikes/Segways nearby.
Let me know if you have other questions about the area.
ETA: There is also a small waterpark in Vista about 20 minutes north of Legoland. It's about $14 to get in and has a lazy river, 4 slides, a large pool and a wave machine that you can boogie board on. It's called "The Wave." Nearby is a bowling alley and movie theatre.

Thank you luvinlifelady. Do you know if you can go back and forth between the water park and Legoland. It seems you could, the water park is inside Legoland proper.

Yes I think you can go back and forth but they may not let you go on rides if you are wet. Shouldn't take long to dry off though since it's been pretty warm here.
ETA: Also, Laguna Beach is a nice artsy type of town to walk around. They have a "Sawdust Festival" going on right now with a bunch of artisans selling their items and some demonstrate their craft too. Also, the Orange County Fair is going on right now but that's in Costa Mesa, so could be out of your way this trip. (north of the airport just a bit)

Sounds like you got it covered and just wanted to say as someone who just came from a trip to San Diego and did both the Zoo and Safari Park..I think you might enjoy the zoo more. At least there are more animals that can be seen and they do have the pandas, polar bears, etc and the big plus here is there is lots of shade and some buses that can be utilized if anyone gets tired of walking.
The Safari Park is hot and dry. They have larger areas of the animals (most of what can be seen at the zoo) and will say the benefit here is the Tigers, Lion Cubs and the Cheetah run plus the more expensive caravan that is 3.5 hours long where you can go in depth to the animals but again, its very hot with some shade but not as much as the zoo. I will say there is a nice lagoon with misters to sit at for a break from the sun and a small water play area by the cheetah run. My two cents any hoo. You will have fun either way I am sure.

DH & I went to San Diego for the July 4th weekend. We live in Orange County and have taken lots of day trips down there, but wanted to take a long weekend trip somewhere and San Diego was close. We stayed in the Gaslamp District. On one of the days, we took the Trolley to the Santa Fe Station and walked to the Midway. We got back on the trolley and went to Old Town. We could have spent the whole day in Old Town, it's really interesting. On another day, we went to Balboa Park and visited the museums. We bought the ticket booklet for $53 per adult that has tickets for all the museums. The Air & Space (or Aerospace) museum has a Ripley's Believe It or Not! exhibit going on right now. It's an extra 5 bucks to get into it. The Natural History Museum is okay, but a huge amount of the space is being taken up with the Real Pirates of the Caribbean exhibit that's quite pricey. The art museum has an exhibit of a Spanish painter named Joaquín Sorolla. DH isn't a big art museum fan, but I talked him into it because of 2+ hours in the aerospace museum. He was blown away by Sorolla's work. The Museum of Man is my favorite at the park. They have a really interesting exhibit on the history of beer.
Is there a reason you're so set on Legoland and the waterpark? I'd recommend skipping it. Legoland is okay, but it's really best for little kids. Your son might like it, but I think your daughter might be a bit too old to really enjoy it unless she's all into Lego sculptures. I don't know where you're from, but there are water parks all over the country. I think the beach would be a lot more fun for your family than a water park. Honestly, there's so much to see & do in San Diego, I don't think you'll miss out by not spending the money on a pricey theme park. Obviously, if your son's heart is set on it and you've promised him you'd go, then you go.

I will add too that you only need about 2 hours for the Birch Aquarium. It's nice, but just not that big. We just went for the first time back in April after living here 9 years. We hosted an exchange student that wanted to go and I'm glad we went. It was neat to see and not overwhelming.
