Watching Letterman. Show is ending with First Aid Kit singing Simon and Garfunkel's "America." A few weeks ago Tracy Chapman sang Stand By Me." He said both were specially chosen because they are the two songs he sang to his son when he was young after reading a bedtime story.
Got me to thinking about our bedtime rituals. My oldest loves music. I'd sit at the piano holding him in my left arm and play with my right hand. Later he'd crawl up on the bench and play his own tunes, but I don't remember singing at bedtime. He's also very verbal and we read a lot so maybe I just never got to singing.
The youngest liked ritual. He had several books we read every night for a long time and I sang "You Are My Sunshine."
So, did you sing to your little ones and if so, do you remember what you sang?

My boys loved when I sang the railroad song ("I've been workin' on the railroad, all the live-long day"). I sang it to them - way off key, of course - every night during bathtime when they were little.
My mom, however, had one song she would sing to me and it would make me cry buckets, but I'd still beg her to sing it to me. It was about 2 roses that decided to run away:
One merry summer day Two roses were at play When all at once they took the notion They'd like to run away
She passed away 23 years ago and I don't have any non-grainy photos of her, but I made a scrapbook page about the roses song using paper-pieced roses. It's one of my most favorite layouts.
Funny how some memories stick with you.

I have 3 kids and assigned them each a song. I chose the first song I sang to them in the hospital. It wasn't an intentional song it was whatever was in my head. Jen

I still sing Ally Bally (Coulter's candy) to my youngest. I just looked it up and apparently it originated as an advertising jingle in Scotland.

I had a list of praise/worship songs that were popular in the late 70's/early 80's that I would sing to my babies, and found myself singing them to the grandkids, too. Always in the list was Jesus Loves Me and Jesus Loves the Little Children which led into Sandi Patti's version of Praise Him, Praise Him, All Ye Little Children. If nothing else, those three were sung on repeat.

Part of our bedtime routine with my 15 month old is singing a song out of the old hymnal we keep in her nightstand (it is my husbands and he got it from his childhood church when they replaced all their hymnals). We usually trade off who reads to her, so whoever isn't reading picks out a song to sing. It's a part of the evening we all really enjoy- already a sweet memory for us and hopefully for her someday too!

Corny I know, but I always sang "You are My Sunshine" to my son and a country song called Stolen Moments to my daughter. I really can't sing so I should probably apologize to them while I'm thinking about it.

I used to sing a variety of songs to my kids. Some of my favorites were "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." As you can guess, I didn't have a theme. Now, I can't carry a tune to save my life and I have zero rhythm. But, both of my kids ended up musically gifted. DD started singing in the children's choir at 6, started voice lessons at 10, played trumpet in band and bass in orchestra in middle & high school. She even met her husband in the UCLA Marching Band. They both sing in their choir. DS doesn't sing, but he is a genius with a guitar. He also taught himself bass and mandolin. He probably can sing, but doesn't because of not being able to sing the high parts he was expected to sing in school choir. Even as a little kid, he had a deep voice.

We didn't have a bedtime ritual of singing, but I would sing to them pretty often with whatever popped into my head.
I remember starting to sing a song to DS. "The rooster says good morning with a cockadoodle doo. The horse's neigh is just his way of saying how are you, a lion growls Hello an owl asks why and where and who"
It was just at that point that I realized I was singing the Gilda Radner song Lets talk dirty to the animals! (The next line is "May I suggest you get undressed and show them your wazoo!" and it continues downhill from there). I moved on pretty quickly to a new song!

Beatles, lots of Beatles.... And Yes Jesus loves Me, and You are My Sunshine, and a number of made up nonsense songs that he loved. He always had music/singing in his life as a child, and is now an awesome singer and guitar picker at 19.

We went through a period of TWO YEARS when DD and I had to sing the same song every night. I don't remember the name of the song, but it was a Sharon, Lois & Bram song (I think) about putting the finger family to bed. You went through each finger, tucking each one into bed. I can still sing that song, although I haven't heard it for more than 20 years! Finger Family Song

The Rainbow Connection and Somewhere Over the Rainbow are the first two that I recall. I did sing a lot to them. I've always sang just randomly throughout the day, though.
I make up songs about the dogs, and both of my kids. Insert them into an existing melody:
To the tune of "Love and Marriage" I did one for the 2 Dachshunds-- Midge and Mabel, Midge and Mabel... chase each other round the kitchen table... silly things like that

I wasn't one who...appreciated...children's music very much, so any songs that got sung around here were grown up songs. I didn't really sing lullabies, as much as there was just music was always on in the background and I sang all the time. One of my favorite memories is having a baby snuggling on my shoulder, dancing in the kitchen and signing Jimmy Buffett's Tin Cup Chalice. There were a lot of other songs, but that one stands out as one that always seemed to sooth them. I still wake the boy up in the morning (I did with the oldest until he moved out too) by singing...could be any song that pops up in my mind, but You Are My Sunshine, Good Day Sunshine and Rise and Shine seem to be in top rotation. I am not, however, above walking in and shouting "WAKEY WAKEY EGGS AND BAKEY!!" ETA: Jimmy Buffett Tin Cup Chalice added because it is such a happy memory not just because I sang it with my kids (still dance with them to it) but because *I* grew up dancing with my mother to it as well. ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/W4b_Om5roEadLiOzGo_l.jpg)

Actually some of the songs I sang around nap time have already been mentioned. We read to our daughters for our bedtime routine. Then when they were old enough they read to us at bedtime.
Stand by Me It's a Small World After All Jesus Loves Me You Are My Sunshine

I always sang the "Hush Little Baby" song, but changed Papa to Gia since that it what our grandson's call me. It was like our own personal version of Soft Kitty, because our oldest always wanted me to sing it when he was hurt or sick. The youngest is only 3 months, so I just sing jibber jabber to him right now and he loves it. We'll find our special song at some point but for now he's happy with anything ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) My boyfriend spent countless hours walking the halls with the oldest GS at night singing "You'll be in My Heart" from Tarzan to soothe him. Every time I hear it on the radio it brings tears to my eyes because it was such a huge part of their bonding...they are absolutely inseparable. We'll put that one on his high school graduation DVD in 3 short years. I can't believe how fast those years have flown by.

I always sang hymns to our triplets. The one that was their song was "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus." When one of my girls was in the ER for a head injury, I remember singing it to her in the ER. She said it is what comforted her the most during that time.

I sang whatever I was singing and would dance and jump around with my DS when he was a baby. I also had a great lullaby tape that we would sing to, then would run continuously while he went to sleep. My favorite lullaby is the I L.O.V.E. Y.O.U -- I still like it! Here is the lullaby and the tape (mine is on a cassette tape - I may need to get a CD!): www.youtube.com/watch?v=r20KsDFaLyM

I always sang "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine" to my daughter. She's 14 now and we still sing it together. We find jewelry and canvas art for her room all the time.

I am probably responsible for ruining my daughter's ear, but I tended to make up silly nonsense songs that I would sing to her. She loved them, which means she has no taste in music. I am a terrible singer!

My mom would sing hymns, my favourite was "His Name is Wonderful" and "The Old Rugged Cross". Both my parents sang the "You are My Sunshine Song". Dad would sing the "Papa Bought Baby a Mockingbird" song until my mom objected because it was a "rock" song. So my dad just sang that when she wasn't around.
Dad would sing in the car, when it was just me and him. He loved the oldies song "Gotta Get a Job" and old classic country like Merle Haggard, George Jones, and Willie Nelson. "On the Road Again" was sung a lot by both my parents (my mom finally relaxed about "secular" music and introduced me to the golden oldies. Dad's favourite song was "Kiss an Angel Good Morning"
