In elementary school I HATED field day. I begged to stay home every year. It was a "track and field" day, not the fun stuff my kids do now. (I should probably add that in the Things I Say That Make Me Feel Old thread.) Anyway, I would pray for rain, sickness, my mother's mercy, anything that might get me out of the terrible day. I believe it was rained out once but otherwise my fervent wishes went unanswered AND my mom would remind me that this was the best day of the year for many kids who felt like I did on allll the other days. (Whatever, Mom. ) Fast forward to today. I am a school librarian. Somehow I never got added to the list of assistants making field day happen. I did not speak up about this as I figure they must have rounded up enough volunteers and this is my first year in the position so there's also the chance I'm just not expected to help. I am so excited to have the time to process my boxes and bags of new books that currently line the area under my desk. I realized last night that my childhood dream has come true. I get to stay in the library ALL DAY instead of having that dreaded day of the school year! Here's hoping it DOESN'T rain! Anyone else a field day hater?

fingers crossed you get to stay in the library all day I hated field day as an uncoordinated, non-athletic child. I don't enjoy it as an parent either - it's a long HOT day sitting in the sun (no shade) - why oh why is it in mid-May in Florida? February would be so much better. This year it's a full day which means eating school lunch as well (K and 1st are half day - Annabelle is in 2nd this year)

Ha ha ha, love it! Today is Track and Field Day at my Primary School, but I'm a lunch lady and since the kids are taking a sack lunch, we get to spend the day doing end of school year cleaning chores. I'd much rather be in the library!

I loved it for my wild ds who always had trouble sitting still in class, and I hated it for my dd who also hated it. I also hated it for myself since I always volunteered to help. ugh, glutton for punishment.

I hated it as a kid and I still hate it. As a kid, I was uncoordinated and certainly not an athlete. As an adult, I hate it because I'm married to a PE teacher and it's all I hear about for a solid crapping month.

Oh man. The skies are ominously dark. C'mon God! I rescind all of those earlier prayers. Send sunshine upon our lands and KEEP THOSE KIDS OUTSIDE! Let there be field day and let it be good!* *for other people. Please continue to leave me out of the field day equation.

I was never good at sports! But I could do gymnastics, dance and was on pom-poms in high school and at a large Division 1 University. I always loved when we did gymnastics in pe, I was always the best in the class at that. But anything involving a ball, I was not good at all!
My daughters love field day! But they are into dance as well as sports. I am so happy they love sports, I didn't want them to go through what I did by dreading pe.
Our high school has a pool, so in 9th-12th grade they have a swimming unit. I think the swimming unit is my daughter's favorite! Although they prefer to have pe at the end of the day so they don't have to worry about their hair.

I am with you 150%. I don't have an athletic bone in my body, I hate to get dirty and sweaty, and I'm a total book nerd. I loathed field day. So the idea of being in a library all day? Yep.

Hated field day. One of the happiest moments was when I realized that once I graduated from high school that no one could ever force me to participate in sports ever again. (I know many people felt that way about math class.)

Count me among the Track and Field Day Haters. I was always the littlest kid in my class, and almost always the last one picked for everything in gym class. (The only exception to that was Dodge Ball because I could crunch up tinier than any other kid so I was the hardest to hit, so more often than not I was the last kid standing.) I hated everything about it. I also hated the annual Presidential Fitness Day or whatever it was called. That sucked too.

I'm excited for you!
I do not remember them from school, so we either didn't have them or they weren't too bad. But for my kids who went to school in South Korea, Nevada, Alabama, and Virginia, I HATED volunteering. It's always on the hottest day of the year and no shade whatsoever. I'm a fair skinned red head and would burn no matter how much sunscreen and hats I wore. And did I mention it was hot?

I hated field day, as do/did all my sons. I take them on a special museum outing or to see a substantial/thought provoking movie instead. It's one of the perks they got for having me as a mom.

I hated Track and Field Day with a passion. I'm accident prone without an ounce of athletic ability. I "participated" in 1st and 2nd grade. Then, starting in 3rd grade, Track and Field Day became Fishing with Grandpa Day. If it was nice enough to be out doing foolish things like running in circles and throwing heavy balls, it was nice enough to be out on the boat with a line in the water on Lac Qui Parle Lake.

I don't remember having Field Day when I was in school. I wonder if I've forgotten, or maybe created a mental block, lol? The elementary/middle schools here always had some sort of outside picnic thingie with different stations/games. They always asked for at least one parent to go. I told DH that was a great thing for him to do with the kids since I volunteered for everything else under the sun. So he went every year.

HATED it with a passion! It was also more of a track and field day than anything else. Always outside in the hot sun with no shade.
When my daughter was in elementary school, I would offer her a fun day off, if she wanted. She went to field day for 3 years in a row until she was over it.

Anyone else a field day hater? So happy for you that your field day dream is coming true! I always hated it as a kid. I was horrible at the activities they did and I usually wound up falling and getting hurt. Then sitting on the side lines after being hurt just opened me up for kids to make fun. Not so fun as a kid. Field day now is not what it used to be. At my sweet girl's school they play at water tables and jump in bounce houses, dance, draw with sidewalk chalk and eat popsicles. All things that I would totally enjoy!

I had to laugh when I opened this thread. I'm a school librarian and today is field day and I'm sitting in my air conditioned office reading this thread! I did get out there for a little bit this morning and took some pictures. (somehow over the years I've become the school photographer) Today is the day all student books are returned, so I'm legitimately busy checking in and shelving about 900 books so far and couldn't be happier!

Field day is so fun at our K-3 school they have an inflatable slide that they put water on. There's water balloons. Then there's the parachute station . . . yeah, they have way more fun than we did as a kid.
I fully get and support your field day fantasy. A whole day hanging out in the library sounds fabulous to me.

I was as unathletic as they come (still am) but I loved Field Day. I liked to run and jump. Plus, I went to a really small school, so there was always a shot at a ribbon.
However, a day in a cool library sounds like heaven at this point in my life (and I would have loved it as a kid, too!)

LOL. I hate field day. But we all have to help, so I cheerfully man my station in the morning and play in the teachers vs. kickball game in the afternoon. And then I go home and take a long shower and open a bottle of wine.

It. Was. Glorious. Best field day ever!
It rained a little first thing in the morning but then it cleared up and all the activities ran as scheduled.
I got books checked in and shelved, new books sorted and processed, and work done for next week's classes. I was go-go-go all day and I think it would take me another day and a half to have accomplished everything I wish I could've.
I enjoyed the air conditioning and the uninterrupted time to accomplish tasks.
Oh -- I also called my mom and told her that my field day dream came true!

Gah, I still remember having to stick 1 leg in a dusty, scratchy, itchy, burlap bag that had the sweaty leg of another person in it! Shudder, that's the only thing I recall about that blasted track & field day event each year.

I don't think I liked it that much in elementary school, although I do remember getting a ribbon for something one year. The only time I've ever enjoyed it (even when I taught) was the year I was at a school where it was more of an all-school event. The 4-6th graders had theirs in the morning, 1st-3rd grade did it in the afternoon, with the 6th graders helping. The PE teacher (I think) planned the whole thing, and it was a lot of fun. Throwing wet sponges, dancing to music, eating snow cones.

LOL!!
And if it DOES rain, that's some bad karma coming to bite you on the butt!! I hope for your sake that the weather is good and you get to spend a nice quiet child-free day in your library.
I loved field day when I was in primary school. (I'm assuming it's what we called Athletics Day, or Interschool sports.) I was good at running back then, especially the 100 metre sprint.
But I absolutely HATED with a passion having to do cross country races. Long distance was not my thing.

I could handle field day because it was only 1 day. I loathed the presidential fitness test with every fiber of my being.

I actually don't have too many memories of Sports Days during my own school years, so although I have never been sporty, I must not have hated them that much!
However, as a teacher- I love them for the kid's sake as ours are very games orientated. We have sprints to start the day but everything else is done as a class and involves teams. They are hard work and ours are often during summer. When I became the librarian I was looking forward to not being out in the sun. But ... so no one feels left out, apart from the front office staff, everyone is allocated to a class to help support a teacher. This can be so boring. I feel like I am just standing there doing nothing as our teachers are capable of supervising their own classes.
However, this year I got a break. I am on our Fundraising Committee and was needed to help with our Sausage Sizzle. It was still busy, but I was inside most of the day packing containers for the class lunches etc. I then spent some time selling sausages. So for me it was a very good day.

I would have so loved a "spend all day in the library" day. That would have been my dream.
I'd rather curl up with a good book than do just about anything else.

Lolol. I had to go searching for this thread because I have news about Field Day. A kindergarten teacher from my favorite school asked me to sub for her for two days in June. I said yes of course, because I love the school (it's where my kids went) and a good friend of mine is the assistant in this class so I'll get to work with her for two days. So I was down there yesterday subbing in 3rd grade and the kindergarten teacher stopped in to let me know that one of those days is.....Field Day! omg. Turns out that she's sad she's missing it. My dd says "Oh fun!" and I said "what??? You hated Field Day." She said "yes, when I had to do the activities I hated it, but I loved being a 5th grader and coming to help with the kindergartens." lolol. So I'm going to sign her up to come down and help. lol. ugh. I know it will be blazing hot that day. Of course.
