I have a collection of stencils starting. I probably have 50 or so now. Variety of sizes from 12 x 12 - small. Currently I am keeping everything in a 12 x 12 art bin / iris case. Not sure if this is practical or not. Any suggestions

I haven't found an ideal storage solution yet, either! I tried a case like you're using, but my problem was then finding a place to keep it! I used one of those clear plastic paper storage envelopes, but that was annoying because I had to take out all of the stencils every time I wanted to look through them. Now I have them in a shallow drawer of one of my JetMax/Recollections/Michael's storage cubes, and I'm pretty happy with it so far. I can look through them easily. I keep smaller stencils on top, 12x12 on the bottom, and sort by size in between. I thought about using page protectors and an album but that seemed like a sort of pricey investment to just store some stencils. Plus, I know I'd never clean and dry the stencil, get the album back out, find the right page protector, and put it back in. I'm far too lazy.

I have mine hole punched and stored on a hinged book ring that clips closed. I then hang that on a hook. I have a few scrapping stencils, but a lot of quilting stencils and this had kept them looking pretty new over the years.

I don't have a lot of stencils so my system involves throwing them into a basket!

This is what I do as well and I love it because I can easily flip through them and it takes up very little space.

I store mine in scrapbooks. I have 12x12, 6x6 and 8x8 I just pop them in the album pages. Then I store them in one of my jet max cubes. It works perfect for me they are easy to flip through and don't take up much space.

I have mine in notebooks, inside of sheet protectors.
I also have made a xerox copy of each stencil and placed that inside of the sheet protector. That way I know where to file one if I pull it out or lend it out to someone.

I store mine in a Cropper Hopper Page Planner just like my paper collections. They're even in with the paper collections, right next to my Silhouette mats, that way there's no need for anything "new" to accommodate them.

I found a really pretty damask AC D ring binder at TM. I use that. I have 12x12 pp, 6x12 pp and some PL dividers that are 6x6, 4 on a page. I have found that this works for me. I cut white CS and wrote the name and manufacturer on that. That get slipped in behind the stencil.

I have mine in a small-sized PL album that I bought and never got around to using. I drop them into a small page protector with inserts so that I can keep two stencils to a PP. Makes it really easy to flip through and see what I have and then I just stash it in a drawer.
I don't have many stencils larger than 6x6 so it works for me. (The big ones I just store in with my paper.)

Thanks everyone for their input
I still don't know . It think binder or album will work best. Large stencils as in 12 x 12 will just remain in a drawer. I will note them in book though. Most my 12 x 12 I have in 6x6 as well.

I'm not going to be too much help to you in your decision, I don't think, because I also keep mine in a 12x12 Iris case. Maybe it's not the best, but it works for me, since that's how I store pretty much all of my supplies. I need to add some cardstock in between the 12x12 and the smaller size ones, or something, though, so it's easier to look through them.
I tried keeping them vertical in a 12x12 envelope in the past, but the cut-out pieces always seemed to catch on each other and I could never pull out just the one I wanted... and flipping through a 3-ring binder for a stencil isn't something I'm willing to do. That's how I used to store my un-mounted stamps, and I never seemed to look thru it or use any of them. But my philosophy is 'out of sight, out of mind' so I need to see things in order to use them. And the way my scrapping style works is to 'rummage' through my Iris boxes to find things-- that way, something might catch my eye as I'm flipping and rummaging.

I use hermafix/ek success repositionable adhesive ( I suspect low-tak spray might work as well), run some over the back of the stencil and affix it to heavy duty cardstock, and store those upright in a basket . The repo adhesive holds up well taking the stencils on and off, then I already have adhesive to hold it to my paper, and the stencils don't get tangled up!! I have a lot of 12x12 and 8.5 x11 stencils thought, not so many of the smaller ones.

I have mine in folders that I just pull out and flip through. I do keep them in their packaging, so they don't get stuck together.

I also use the binder ring method. Mine just hang off my rolling cart from Michael's, which holds all my "artsy" supplies. Works for me, and it's very handy and easy to access.

I have this same problem honestly, but I didn't have a line-of-sight place to store my stencils, so into the binder they went. What I did instead was keep my embossing pastes and a few of my mists and daubers in my line of site so that I'd remember stencil techniques as a group and then that triggers me to remember to pull out my stencil book. It actually works for me.

I have all my small stencils in a 3 ring binder. My 12 x 12 stencils are in my embossing boss box

The 3 ring binder/sheet protector method works well for me. Since some of my stencils are large I had to go with a standard size binder. I put a sheet of paper in each protector and store a stencil on either side of it. I like the idea of a binder ring but the last time I tried to store some paper swatches on one my cat chewed (validated) the paper. Not going there again.

I would use a file box or actually one of those 12x12 plastic envelopes....
