Last weekend, we hosted a birthday party for our grandson. I got him a smash cake since it was his first birthday. I was behind the camera taking pictures as we were singing "Happy Birthday". As we finished singing, his mommy (my step-daughter) blew out the candle then I expected her to put the cake on his high chair tray in front of him. I was completely unprepared for what happened next... She smashed the cake in his precious little face. There was complete silence in the room... Our guests were speechless! I rushed to get a washcloth to get the frosting out of his eyes. I had to leave the room after that because I was in tears. I just couldn't believe someone would do that to their baby.
Fast forward to yesterday.. He had another party at his other grandma's house. We saw a video posted on Facebook of them smashing cake in his face not once, not twice but three times. All the adults were laughing like it was the funniest thing ever!! I feel so bad for him. He was so upset.
The way all the adults there acted makes me wonder if this is normal? Have you ever seen anyone smash cake in a 1 year olds face? I thought maybe the mom misunderstood what a "smash" cake was but the way the crowd acted shows me this is normal for their circle.
It sure isn't normal to me! What are your thoughts?

That poor baby, I can't believe that would be normal behavior. But... I've been proven wrong before. It certainly isn't something I would ever do to anyone, much less a baby.

WTF? I've never heard of an adult smashing a cake in a baby's face for a first birthday party.

That is not even close to being funny. Slap stick humor with a one year old? Wonder what the little guy was thinking?

I was completely heartbroken! What kind of people think that is ok?? Makes me wonder what else they do to him.

She's your step daughter and not your daughter in law? I'd be saying something to her!

Yes she's my step-daughter. We don't have a close relationship so her dad will be talking to her about it.

That is not right at all! I would have been pea livid! Poor little thing. I know what I would be tempted to do on her birthday!

Maybe she's trying to instill a fear of cake in him so he won't get fat? That's the only reason I can think of to do something so awful to a baby. I think babies are so cute with their first birthday cake. Usually, it's their first exposure to sweets. Some just get one taste and dive right in. Others take a tentative taste and reject it outright. This actually sounds like the next step from brides and grooms smashing wedding cake into each other's faces. Not cool, but at least newlyweds are adults.

No, that is not the norm. Your step daughter would do well to remember this quote:
"A person is a person no matter how small." To do that to a child who has no clue what is going on is absurd. And it's not funny at all.

Aw, that poor kiddo! I was under the impression a smash cake was given to the baby to eat (really, smash it up with their pudgy little fists) and the regular cake was cut and served to guests. At no time in my life have I ever seen an adult smash a cake into a baby's face.

I've never seen that or heard of it. That is truly odd behavior. I'm glad he didn't choke on it or have trouble breathing with some of it in his nose.
I've only seen the cake put in front of the baby and then they have their go at it. I even forgot to give one to DD (she was my first).

That is definitely not normal. I agree with the person who said you should smash a cake in her face on her birthday. What an ass!!

That was such a rotten thing to do to your grandson. I have never heard of such a thing. Usually, the baby does a good enough job of getting cake all over their face all by themselves and they get to enjoy it while they do.

Just what you want to teach someone from the very first birthday they have....be destructive and hurtful not to mention making them dread a great day in their life!
Definitely some madness out there in the world!

That's very far from normal. In fact, it's abuse. She clearly didn't learn a lot from the reaction of the guests at the first party, which is a shame. You need to have a chat with her, whether or not your relationship is a close one. I honestly can't think of a single person I know (and some are far more immature than others) who would think this is a good idea, let alone that it's a good idea TWICE.

Another one saying that's not normal. I've never seen anyone actually smash the cake in the baby's face. Maybe put a little icing on their nose but not smash the whole cake. Poor little guy

So not normal. After I read it...I had to read it again...I was so stunned by this....
I say for her next birthday someone picks up the cake and smashes in her face several times.

I don't even get smash cakes, so for someone to use one to smash a kid's face? Nope. I'm not even going to pretend to understand that like I do with smash cakes.

For the record, if I had been a guest at either party, I would have spouted off right then and there. I would have been too shocked to keep my big mouth shut.

OMG, that's not normal! In what world does she think smashing cake into a baby's face is okay?! What an absolutely piece of sh!t, garbage person she must be.
And for the record, smash cake refers to a small cake for the baby to smash his hands into & feed himself. It's cute because he makes himself all messy and has a good time doing it.
