What ever was she thinking of! Not only is it stupid it's downright dangerous. If some of that cake went up his nose and covered his mouth he could choke/stop breathing.

Ordering a first birthday cake from Publix comes with a free smash cake. Neither of my kids were very interested in them. With my first, I won't lie, I was a little disappointed I didn't get the fantastic pics I fully intended to scrap into a beautiful layout. He tried to push the cake off his high chair and had zero interest in it.
By the time my 2nd turned 1, I don't think I even had a camera in my hand when the cake was in front of her. She took a couple of pokes with her finger and that was that.
I, on the other hand, know better than to waste a Publix cake and happily indulged myself.

Traditions within families are generally a-okay with me falling into the "just because I don't do it doesn't mean it isn't okay" category. But this is just awful. I would have hated to see that happen too.
(and Cecelia? I love Publix cake. There isn't one they have that I don't like. LOL)

I have never seen that done and would hope I never do. It seems extraordinarily mean.

It does sound an extremely stupid and mean thing to do but can you clarify what you mean by smash? To me it suggests violent force, now if this was the case I wouldn't have just stood there while it happened and I wouldn't have let her leave my house without some kind of talking to. Also it makes me wonder if she saw this www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycW5QfIkXG4 and thought the baby looked like she was having fun.

That youtube video is awful. I don't care how they dress it up with laughter. It is just mean spirited.

I don't even like to see adults shove cake in each others face at weddings, and I wouldn't want to see a child get cake shoved in his or her face either. But that's just me! Everyone is different!

That's not funny. I gave my girls their own small cake (never heard it called a smash cake until this thread) to do with whatever they wanted, but would never smash a cake in a baby's face.

I find the idea of smash cakes utterly bizarre, but your SD's approach sounds very odd indeed.

As several others have pointed out, smashing a cake in a baby's face isn't just assy - it's dangerous. Regardless of WHY she did it, I think I'd get to working on a closer relationship with her right quick for the safety of that poor child.

It sounds to me as if this is a silly tradition that her mom's side of the family or some other person has instilled in her since she did it twice.

That is just awful. I would have said something to her...in front of everyone. But I also appreciate your position and why you didn't. That poor baby. I hope your DH gets through to her.

No, that's not the way we do it It does seem like she was taught to do that (by the laughter at the second party) or learned it from youtube. Social media seems to bring out the worst in some people just for a laugh or two

I have heard of someone else doing it in real life, my fiance's ex (lol not surprising why she's an ex) to their kids, when they were little. His mom told me about it, and she was even like wtf. Seems cruel to me, not to mention a big waste of cake. At least with smash cakes (which are meant for the baby to smash lol) the kid eats it!

We did a smash cake when my now 3 year old had his first birthday. All the smashing was done by him and he did an amazing job of it, esp in the portrait studio with only his diaper on. I can't imagine ever smashing a cake or anything else into my child's face. I would have been upset to witness that, too.
