As far as I remember, there isn't a single solitary thing along that stretch of road...google Alligator Alley. I want to even say that is mostly two lane (or at least it was back in the day.) I think you can pretty much consider a way to drive to get from one side to the other. Once you get there, you will have fun...but on your way, not so much. As big of a state as we are, there aren't a whole lot of ways to drive across. There is a road south of Alligator Alley that is better if you are leaving from Miami or South of Miami, and then one above Alligator Alley (80 I think? goes through Labelle maybe?) Even further up is 60. And not one of those roads has a any kind of place to stop and see something fun, or do anything cool. I think it goes through part of the Everglades National Park, but again, I don't think there is a lot there. Maybe a couple of places to pull over for a picnic, and probably one of those pull over, get gas, eat lunch watch the alligator wrestling tourist trap places. But honestly, the last time I did it was a long time ago. The most recent was because I wasn't paying attention and missed my turn to get to Everglades City (south of Marco) and had to find a place to turn around. ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/Ivm7lm0DayrhoRpwvCeH.jpg)

Oh...but while you are out and about, y'all should try to take a side trip down to Everglades City and take the boat around that side of the Everglades. It is not what you think of when you think the of Everglades-that part is actually islands and water-not salt marshes and marsh grasses or the big cypress trees.
It is worth the day. There are a couple of fun places to eat also...

There is pretty much nothing between Ft. Lauderdale and Naples. Naples is worth a stop just to walk around 5th Ave for a little while then come on up to Cape Coral (I live there!)

Are those air boat rides worth it?

Are those air boat rides worth it? I've never done one. Those are usually on the other side of the Everglades from where we spend our time.

I'm glad some responsible Peas are able to answer. I had to erase my reply, multiple long drives to in laws have left me numb.
I enjoyed my first air boat tour, but I am easily entertained when things are new. The operator probably makes a huge difference. ETA ours pointed out native vs invasive plant species, and gave some history. It was interesting.
I considered myself an idiot when we took our barely tall enough, and very curious, youngest DS on one for a gator tour. 10 or so years later I still remember how tight I held his waist band. ETA my sons got a chance to go again last year without us. They had a good time and had a guide who played to teen interests.

We will be driving from Ft Lauderdale to Cape Coral. Thanks! That is one lonnnng boring drive. You can stop at the reservation, but there's really not much there. (just did it a week or so ago.)

I was wondering what is considered to be "south" Florida. I'm near Tampa and the furthest south I've been is near Clearwater or Treasure Island. It was too boring a drive and we turned around. I'd consider flying to the Keys, but I can't take a LONG drive that's boring. Hope you have a fun trip. I know a few friends that live in Naples--it looks beautiful there.

Where I grew up (Ft. Lauderdale/Miami area) is what I consider "South Florida", including the Keys. Cape Coral/Ft. Myers/Naples is what I call "Southwest Florida." When I transferred to USF in '92, I could do the Tampa to Broward drive in my sleep. (NO, not really!) When I first started, Alligator Alley was still under construction and there was still a stretch that was only one lane each way. (Had a few scary moments!) Now it's four lane highway all the way.
Go over the Skyway into Sarasota, and check out those beaches, Siesta Key, Longboat Key, Anna Maria. That's a gorgeous drive.

We haven't done the airboat lately (I did one once way back in the early 70's!), but we did a Mangrove Wilderness boat trip, very nice. Not fast and loud but you go into the mangrove areas where the airboats can't go and can see and learn a lot about the glades. We enjoyed it. I don't know when you're coming over, but I've seen a lot the last couple of days about fires on both north and south sides of I-75, visibility is limited in some areas, so be careful. Enjoy Cape Coral, we love it here!

Enjoy Cape Coral, we love it here! That is the tour that I was talking about...you can go up in the mangroves, or out on the boat. Both are pretty cool. My personal preference is the mangrove islands (that area is called the Ten Thousand Islands) because it is probably one of the most gorgeous places I have ever seen-and hardly anyone knows about it. It is a hugely important part of the ecosystem down here. We are down there all the time. If you are going to be down here, you really should take a day and go down to Everglades City. Take one of the boats out, eat lunch (try City Seafood,) check out Smallwood's Store (on the National Historical Places Register) where you can learn the history of the area (that area has been in continuous habitation forever-like at least 1000 years or longer.) The area is incredibly rich in history. The city itself is tiny. TEENY TINY. As in they had mixed grade class rooms until the 80's (if I remember correctly.) But it is a pretty awesome look at how Florida can be-not the Disney version.

Everglades City is worth your time - the boat ride and lunch at Camellia Street Grill would be worth the trip across the state themselves. We are going to go back and do the 10,000 islands tour when friends come down this summer. SW Florida is a wonderful place to live, so many different things to do and explore.

anxiousmom and beachbum it never fails- no matter how tired I am of our florida trips I learn of another place to visit. Oftwn feom Peas, My in laws are no help. They have the curiousioty of pavement. Thanks for Everglades City tip! It sounds fun. This year we only have to go as far as Tampa, Sarasota. I'll be bugging you for advice later. (And of course Alabama Chanin, I'm still trying to plot route.)

I'd consider flying to the Keys, but I can't take a LONG drive that's boring. Hope you have a fun trip. I know a few friends that live in Naples--it looks beautiful there. I consider "south Florida" to be the east coast-like Miami/Fort Lauderdale/West Palm Beach area. Oddly though, when describing Fort Meyers, Naples and further south, I will say that they are "down south." ( ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/Ivm7lm0DayrhoRpwvCeH.jpg) ) The Keys, which are more south than either, are just "the keys." But they are two very different different places-South Florida and down south. Very different personalities, different cultures, different ways of doing things. Each has their own pluses and minuses and both have some incredibly beautiful and interesting sites to see. I actually have a grandfather that was born in Coral Gables. I think, and I can't speak to everyone who is from here, one of thing that frustrates people is that Florida is pretty much drawn into three distinct areas that people seem to only want to go to-Disney, beach and Miami. We are a HUGE state (it takes at least 8 hours to drive from one end to the other-not including the keys) and have so much more to offer. I would imagine other people in states that have huge tourist attractions feel the same way. When we get asked to share about some of the other sites that represent us beyond the obvious, we get excited. And speaking as someone who was fortunate enough to grow up here, with parents who are from here and with grandparents who are from here-I grew up going to old Florida rather than the Disney Florida and to me, THAT is what I want people to experience. Places like Everglades City and the boat tours and museums like Smallwood's are such a cool way to get a taste of that. Or a little out of the way places like Miccanopy with it's antique shops and a side trip to see Marjorie Kinnan Rawling's House/State Park while you are there. I won't bore you with the rest, but you get the idea.

We're driving up to Georgia tonight, up to the mountains. We're stopping half way in Valdosta, and then going the rest of the way in the morning. I'll go right past the exit! It will probably be around 10:30, 11pm by then, so everything will be closed up for the night.

Anxiousmom: Thank you for that detailed description. I suppose we (unfortunately) chose the worst part of FL to settle down in!! I don't care about Disney. Miami doesn't interest me. The Gulf is boring to me (someone who grew up with the beautiful ocean closeby). I have heard of Coral Gables. Is it nice? I had friends that lived there and then moved to Naples. I'm assuming it's all in the same vicinity? I'd like to take a trip down there, but it seems that it would take me 3 hours just to drive to Fort Myers from here. Ugh...

anxiousmom "I think, and I can't speak to everyone who is from here, one of thing that frustrates people is that Florida is pretty much drawn into three distinct areas that people seem to only want to go to-Disney, beach and Miami." ****** I'm not even from Florida, I married into it, and I understand. A remarkable number of my neighbors seem to think Florida IS Destin, or Disney. Uniquely Florida places like Coral Cables are unknown. That's got to be frustrating to a "native"! Maybe I need to thank my DH, our need (AKA panic) to not spend every moment with family has led to some fun sites.

Coral Gables is actually a suburb of Miami. University of Miami's main campus is there. Lots of museums, theatres, restaurants, really neat places to see. Coconut Grove isn't too far from there either, with it's own brand of uniqueness. Just like Florida isn't all Disney, Miami isn't all South Beach.

If you drive the 2 or so hours south of Tampa to Fort Myers you can take a ferry to Key West - great way to get there, makes the journey fun, too. You go early in the morning, it takes about 3 hours - either come back late that same day or stay a while... I love the Keys. I think of anything south of Sarasota as 'south' Florida on the west coast.

Thanks, beachbum! We're closer to Bayonet Point or Hudson (*gasp*), so I know that Fort Myers is at least 3 hours away. I have an ex SIL who lives there and it's a long drive. The ferry idea does sound nice & DH LOVES Key West. Maybe we'll do it when I have some time & $$ put aside. Thanks.
