I am going to be screening Selma, which I haven't seen, with my twelve-year-old. I know my nine-year-old, who is an American history obsessive, would love to watch. He isn't particularly sensitive to violence. My inclination is to let him watch, but is there any reason not to, or any scene I should be prepared for (it is history, so obviously you should not worry about spoilers, cough).

I saw it with my 12 y/o DD. My 9 y/o wasn't with us, but it would have been fine for her, IMO.
There are some intense scenes, of course, but if your son isn't a sensitive sort and loves history I think he would get a lot out of it.
