Got a gift cert for a massage. Heard they do a hard sell for "package deals" for future visits. I want to be prepared so I am wondering ahead of time the prices. Little info on website.
Anyone know
Also,Have any advice for a person who has rarely gotten a massage. I know water is important but what else?

I used to work for Massage Envy at the front end. They won't sell to you until the end when you are in a massage high. It has been several years since I have worked there but the last time I was there it was $59 per month for a year long membership. The $59 entitles you to one hour long massage per month, that is called a "pre-paid" massage. Any additional hour long massages are $49.00. Again, these were prices four years ago in Southern California, so it may vary in your location.
They will try to get you to sign up by saying your next massage will be over $100. Don't feel like you need to sign up if you don't anticipate wanting to spend $700+ for 12 massages in a year. They will keep pushing and if the clinic is anything like the one I worked at they will have the paperwork already filled out and they will push the contract and a pen in front of you to sign up at the same time they are ringing you up.
As for tips, undress to your comfort level. Most people strip down to their undies or less. An hour long massage is actually 50 minutes, there are five minutes at the beginning and end for undressing and redressing. After you undress you will lay on the massage table, there should be a blanket and two sheets. Lay under the blanket and one sheet and on top of the bottom sheet. You will be completely covered during the massage except for the areas the therapist is working on. Drinking water after the massage is very important to avoid soreness! Relax and enjoy, I hope you have a good experience and don't have to deal with too much of a hard sell. Their hard sell tactics are part of the reason I left that particular job.

The first thing is enjoy your massage.
I go to my Chiropractors to get my massage. I get the Ashiatsu (done with feet) massage it is a very deep massage but it is so good....
Our Chiropractor charges $40 for 30 minutes and $65 for an hour.
I go about 3 times a year.
I love it.
Not sure about packages or any of that. At Christmas they were doing a special half off massage we bought 12 of them. Gave 2 away and kept the rest. I still have a couple left to use. I let my daughter have one. I am hoping that this coming Christmas they have another special.

Yes, massage envy will try and get you to sign a contact for a year at 59 pper month which includes 1 massage. More massages in a month are at a "discounted" rate. It is quite the scam in a way the gym membershis are.
it is a scam that I happily pay for. I love massages, but would slack on getting them. This way I am really forced to getone at least once per month.
If you dont use one one month, it will roll over and if you need to pause your contract you can.

It's like 69 a month now. I still have my membership. When I go, I LOVE it. Absolutely LOVE it. But the nearest Massage Envy to me is about an hour away. And I just don't have the time to go as often as I would like. I have like 21 built up massages. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/mYSUyHtG9Jrcmm_ydVcK.jpg) And my husband has decided that we're keeping it until I use them all up. Ridiculous.

There is a class action lawsuit against them for their membership program. Probably something to do with them calling the massages "pre-paid" but then refusing to refund any that you didn't use. I'll have to look into it more but I will be joining the suit if that's what it's about. I had to close my bank account to get them to stop billing me. They refused to refund me for 10 unused messages when I wanted to cancel.

I've only been once. I was going to treat myself for my birthday one year. My mom called ahead of time and paid for my massage. They did try to push the upsell on me afterwards but I told them I was just not ready to commit to that. My chiro offers something similar but for a good bit less.

I appreciate the heads-up. I've never been to Massage Envy (have never had a massage) but I bought my mother a gift card for a Mother's Day/Birthday gift. I'll have to let her know to be prepared for the hard sell.

I'd be pissed about having to close my account, but except for charges incurred after you asked to cancel, why should you get your money back? You signed a contract and paid up front and didn't use them?

That is a good deal for an hour long massage. I paid over $90 two years ago and that was post car accident. If I could get a good massage for $50/mo I would be really happy! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg) Are the practitioners good?

Some are good and some are bad. You have to try a few and ask for recommendations. I had one who decided to readjust my back, even thoughi had specifically said I was there only for a relaxation massage. That "adjustment" she did set off a spasm in my pirformis muscle which turned into a serious knot which took months of PT and ultrasound waves blasted into it to undo. Never went back to her.
But I did find 2 awesome ladies that I saw for years until I moved away.

pierkiss If you are 25 miles from any Massage Envy location you can cancel your membership before your contract is up. You would forfeit any unused pre-paids, unfortunately.

Oh I know I can cancel. That's not the problem. I'm not about to let go of 21 massages though. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/Q_m8lDOvc_3Le3r1GKdf.jpg)

They did let us do two hour massages and do them more often than once a month so we use them up faster. And then we quit once they were gone. So you might see if they have an option like that.

Massage Envy SUCKS!! As others have said, they shove papers at you to sign right after you come out of your massage and in a mind space not conducive to committing to spending hundreds of dollars. I also have sensitivity to odors and the place has scent EVERYWHERE!
DH bought me a package as a gift and was told the gratuity was included and it wasn't, so that wss also awkward.
I had a good massage but everything else wss a nightmare.

You signed a contract and paid up front and didn't use them? Yes I know I signed a contract. I just didn't like the idea of letting go of so many pre paid massages at the end. To me, pre paid means you pay for something ahead of time expecting to get it. It's not like a gym membership where you're paying for access to something that you can use or not. Massage Envy was always very careful to not refer to my program as a subscription, they always referred to it as pre paid. So when I didn't use the service I pre paid for I sort of expected to get the money back. Clearly lots of people who understand these things better than me agreed, hence the settlement.

I just realized the gym membership comparison was stupid without further explanation. If you cancel a gym membership, there's nothing tangible that can be given back to you. When I pre paid for massages, I expected to get them. I would have been very happy to cancel the pre payments but still keep the product that I had already paid for, instead of a refund. To me that's what prepayment means.

I believe the suit is about not getting the massages, bit they will probably refund people from the past while honoring prepaid in the future after cancellation.

If I understand the suit correctly, we will get a percentage of our massages. I'll be very happy with that, given the alternative was to get nothing!
