Rarely, perhaps mention it to your doctor and maybe they will want to run a "swallow study".

hollymolly, a doctor told me to prevent that you need to look down when you swallow. He also recommended I slow down eating and drinking and avoid using a straw, as it allows liquid into the throat faster and with more force. I have had trouble with pills and taking his advice of looking down to swallow has helped enormously.
I had surgery several years ago and the incision was through the neck and afterwards I had a bit of trouble--maybe due to scar tissue, but it's much better now. Aspirating food particles can lead to lung issues, so you want to make sure you aren't doing that!

Yes, please mention it to your Doctor. I had a swallow study done due to MS and my ''mechanics'' are fine it's the ''fatigue'' that sets in during repeated chewing/swallowing that are an issue. I worked with a Speech Pathologist and despite implementing all the tips and tricks she taught me and exercising mealtime vigilance, I got aspiration pneumonia and well, I'm lucky to be here. Please tell your doctor.

Way too often. I've always wondered if I had a poorly constructed throat. And biting my cheek too. You'd think I'd know how to chew by now!

That is one of the signs of low Vitamin B12. I had problems swallowing last year, but have started supplementing with B12 and it's gone away. It was a really strange feeling. I'm glad it's gone now!
I've looked a little into this but not found it cited as a symptom of low Vit B. Do you have more info on that?
I've seen it on several sites. Here's one that it's mentioned on. I'd find more, but I'm on satellite internet and it's really slow today. www.homeofgoinggreen.com/vitamin-b12-deficiency-symptoms.html

i do think that what most of you are experiencing is the trachea shutting down to keep the food from entering your lungs - that whole...i can't talk and only cought experience

This has never happened to me, I honestly thought it was a old wive's tale when people said they "swallowed down the wrong pipe." I'm sorry this happens to you, it must be scary!

Thank you. That's the first time I've seen that listed as a symptom.

I will take a breath and take a bite at the same time and that's when the trouble starts. Hate the feeling afterwards as if there was still a problem. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/mYSUyHtG9Jrcmm_ydVcK.jpg) I think that's what's happening in most cases.

I do it quite often and have since I was a young child. I just love ( ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/SCylSBljj3e3QKjxF2vn.jpg) ) coughing and choking and eyes running and nose running. And having people ask if you are alright when you can't talk. Life is just full of fun things.
