I do this all the time, and it sucks. Usually it's because I'm taking a drink while my throat is relaxed and I'm not paying enough attention when I swallow. Sometimes I choke on my own spit in my mouth. This happens a couple of times a month, or more. For the next day or so, I still feel like there's a little drop of liquid on the edge about to go down and I keep clearing my throat or trying to cough it up. I know it's just leftover irritation, but it drives me nuts and is incredibly irritating to the people around me. I just did it while drinking water, and it was more than usual. I literally couldn't get air for the first couple of gasps. I'm fine now, just the lingering feeling that I need to keep clearing my throat. Is it possible to drown yourself drinking a cup of water? Tell me I'm not completely abnormal.

Often. Though not so often that I've worried about whether I'm doing it too often. You're not abnormal, though.

Pretty often. Like at least once a week, maybe even more.

It happens to me at least a couple of times a month. I don't worry about it now, but do think when I get older that it could be an issue. I had pneumonia once in my thirties and I never want to experience that again.

I had pneumonia once in my thirties and I never want to experience that again. That's what I'm afraid of! I feel like I'm bound to give myself pneumonia at some point. Thanks for the reassurance, everyone. No one else around me seems to do it, or I just seem to be the only one annoying everyone constantly clearing my throat.

Almost every day. And times I have trouble swallowing. I swallow and then it gets part way down and I can't get it the rest of the way and it HURTS.
I do worry about it. A lot.

Very rarely.
I would be concerned if it happened frequently. It could be an anatomical issues. The biggest concern is the risk of aspiration pneumonia.

Swallow your own windpipe? I have never heard of such a thing. What does this mean??? Like when you swallow wrong and stuff goes down the wrong pipe. I was driving about 2 years ago and this happened to me. I was coughing so hard I had to pull over and I peed my pants coughing so hard.

Very rarely. I'd be worried about a problem if I did it weekly or daily....

I had no idea that people did this frequently. That doesn't sound normal to me, but I'm going to assume that you all have mentioned it to a doctor? I know that they do have swallowing therapy, and based on the few times that I've swallowed something incorrectly, I would definitely look into that if it was a regular thing. Because that feeling of not being able to get air sucks.

Oh my gosh. I HATE that! It seems like one of those things where I don't do it for awhile but then once I do, I keep on doing it. Like when you bite the inside of your cheek and then it's chomp city on that damaged area. (That happens to other people too, right?)
I choke so badly that people get concerned then their attention on me just makes me feel more anxious and chokier. Bah. Hate it!

That is one of the signs of low Vitamin B12. I had problems swallowing last year, but have started supplementing with B12 and it's gone away. It was a really strange feeling. I'm glad it's gone now!

Rarely. I would bring it up at my next doctor appointment if it happened more often than 2-3x in a year.

You need to go to the doctor with this problem. I've suffered with the same thing for years and mine is caused by a stricture that needs to be stretched every so often. I also have other swallowing problems that mean my entire diet is liquid based. I do choke a lot, sometimes on thin air!

Really? Something like that would never have occurred to me. It it happened to my mother and it happens to me. I have noticed it happens mainly when I am distracted and not concentrating on the food. I will take a breath and take a bite at the same time and that's when the trouble starts. Hate the feeling afterwards as if there was still a problem.

I do it once in a while. I have no idea what I do that causes it but I hate it. I've always taken extra B vitamins so I don't think my B12 is low.

I've looked a little into this but not found it cited as a symptom of low Vit B. Do you have more info on that?

Rarely but dh does it all the time and as such has banned powdered sugar on desserts. He says he gets it from his grandma and I noticed our boys do it fairly frequently too. It's such an uncomfortable feeling, I feel bad for anyone who this happens to on a regular basis

I do it it several times a month. I have always done this, so has my mother. Come to think of it, my DDs do it too. I never really thought it was a problem though.
