Thinking of getting the kids phones for their b-days (1 month apart). We are with Verizon. We have 2 options -
1 - get them both 5Cs. Get a $100 bill credit for dd's line (new contract). Phones are essentially free, just have to pay for the taxes upfront (around $120 total for both phones).
2 - get them both 6s. Get $400 in rebates. Will have to do the Edge plan and pay on the phones. Advantage is getting more data (from 4-6 gigs).
Both options the bill pretty much stays the same (within a few dollars).
Dh doesn't want to pay $500 x2 for the phones (even if they are paid over time). I didn't really want to get the kids iPhones to begin with. But dd wants a new iPod for her b-day (she has my old one that is about 5 years old). She will be getting a phone this summer since she will be going into 6th grade. Ds has a phone but hates it (not a smart phone) and says it's not even charging. So I figured this was a good option.
What say the peas?

Will your bill be more or less the same, including the Edge payments? If so, I'd go that route. We went with Edge this last time because with promos, free data, discounts, etc, our bill ended up being the same with the Edge payments, as it would have been if we'd gotten the phones outright. And we got 12 GB of shared data. If we'd not done Edge, our bill would have been within $10/mo of our current bill and we'd have only had 8 GB of shared data. On principle, I don't like paying for the phone over time, but it actually worked out cheaper for us to do it that way.

The Edge option makes the bill about $4 more than not and gives us 6 gigs vs 4 gigs.

How do they feel about the size of the iPhone 6? There is a pretty big size jump, in my opinion. Plus the iPhone 5c comes in fun colors.

Not sure. Trying to figure out a way to ask them w/o giving it away. As for the colors, they'd have cases on them anyways. Do the colors still show?

If you go with the 5C, is that on a 2 year contract? The 5C is almost the same as the 4S technology wise. If you are stuck with these phones for 2 years, that is going to be way behind in technology and I would be concerned that software upgrades won't work or will cause other issues like major slow downs, etc. So, for me, I would never buy phone technology that was that old. On the other hand, I don't know how old your kids are and how responsible they are so I might not was to spend a lot of money on a phone that they might lose and then I am stuck making payments on a phone that doesn't exist anymore.

eebud - that was one of my concerns. They will be 13 and 11.

Since the cost is relatively the same over two years I'd go with the 6. I wouldn't invest in a phone that is already outdated. Back in the fall I updated from a 5c to a 6+ and the only thing I miss about my 5c is the color! But you're right it was covered up by the case.
I have a friend who, along with her 13 year old son, got 5c's around the same time. Her son has used up all the space on his phone and is constantly complaining because he can't take photos. The 16gb 5c wasn't a good choice for him.

My ds has a 5C and it is a piece of junk - Keeps getting stuck in headphone mode, so he can't talk on the phone normally- either has to have headphones in, or has to talk on speaker. In addition, apps on the iPhone do not have the function for clearing the app's cache, so the memory on the phone is constantly full. The only solution for this is to delete and reinstall the app. DH and I have Samsung Galaxy S5's and have no issues. DS got the iphone because he had been wanting it, and we were changing cell carriers at the time. I told him this weekend when we were trying to solve the memory issue that I will never buy another one. Apple has marketing down pat, but quality control is definitely lacking.

The things I would worry about with the 5C is that there's not much storage on them (only 8gb - your kids will eat that up in no time) and the fact that it really is outdated technology. I'd probably choose to go with the 6 in your case, even though you'd be paying for them over time. It'll give you twice the storage (assuming you go with the 16gb one) and newer technology that will definitely last the 2 years that they'll have them - and hopefully longer. Does Verizon still offer the 5S? If so, that might be a good compromise.

My dd (14) and DH opted for the 5S because of the size issue. I have the 6, but I wanted the bigger screen. Is the 5C the only option or can you get the 5S?

Not sure about the 5S. I just asked for 5C. Didn't think about the 5S. I'll find out. But I'm leaning towards the 6 for the reason that it's the most up to date one. DD can't update her iPod because it's so old. It won't update the latest IOS.
